Hey, guys I was just wanting to know what you guys think about Luke's role in the upcoming movies. Do you guys think he will die in the new trilogy or will he survive? If he dies what movie will it be in and how? I personally hope he does not die because then I personally would die inside! :( I am worried they will kill him off in a stupid way. He is the most powerful Jedi of all time specially now their is no way Kylo Ren could kill him. I understand we don't know to much about Snoke yet but still I don't think someone as old as Snoke could kill Luke. But what do you guys think?(luke)

May the Force be with you!

I think the old members will all die: Han (done), Leia and Luke.

Han died in order Ben can pass from teens age to adult age, by killing his father.
In the same "symbolic" way, Rey will have to "kill" her master in order to become the new Jedi, just as Luke killed Vader.
And Leia? perhaps she will die because of suffering : that would parallel Padme's death, Padme who didn't want to live anymore since she had lost his love... Leia has definitely lost her son and her former husband.

    My 2 cents.

I'm thinking Luke survives. Hamill isn't that old, he seems to be a very willing participant in the new movies, and his presence adds a certain amount legitimacy to any Star Wars film he appears in.

The saga is going to continue after Episode 9, with Jedi, and I don't see Daisy Ridley transitioning into the teacher role that quickly. It makes sense, from both a marketing and a story telling standpoint, to keep Luke around.

I'd actually be okay if they used this same group of actors past Episode IX. I don't see why they have to force the stories into a trilogy.

Luke could still serve as a mentor to Rey even if he does die by making him a force ghost. I hope he doesn't get killed in the ST but Star Wars does have a track record of killing off the mentor figures.

The TFA marks the cast of the original trilogy handing the reigns to the new cast. Although revered, Luke Skywalker (like other Jedi heroes of the past) must eventually become one with the Force either through battle, or natural causes.

In order to come into their own as the new heroes, must Luke die as Qui Jon, Mace, Obi-Wan, Anakin/Vader, and Yoda before him? Or should Luke take on an active role in defeating Snoke at the risk of overshadowing Rey, Finn, and Poe as the new generation of heroes?

I really hope that he will not die - because I want them to break away from killing mentors, but also because I LIKE LUKE.

I said somewhere else that I hope that this trilogy ends with Luke as Grand Jedi Master of the new Jedi Order and Rey and other potential Jedi as new peacekeepers of GFFA. With reformatted ideology that includes what Luke did in OT, what he learned in 30 years after and what ALL Jedi will learn in this trilogy.

If Rian can pull off making Snoke, ToR, and Kylo the threat Vader/Emperor was and not have Luke overshadow Finn and Rey I may be able to picture him not being a Force ghost at the end of the trilogy. The harder part of the two in my opinion is having Luke in the movies without him having top billing or being a major focal point for the fans. This will result in Daisy and John being the supporting actors to Mark.

Mark will certainly have a top billing like Harrison did in Episode VII. They managed for Solo/Harrison to not overshadow Finn and Rey, but again he is no Jedi. But now, we know and love them both so there is less danger from that happening. Luke could be in the background finding other Force sensitives, maybe together with Maz, while Finn and Rey and Poe fight the battles.

I have faith in Rian Johnson and the team behind him. I had faith in J.J. and it paid off, now I am hoping Rian will lead us into the future. And, I hope Luke is in that future in any capacity. Or maybe I am overly optimistic, I don't know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Don't kill Luke, Rian! That means you too, Colin! :p)

Since plot lines are cyclical in Star Wars, I imagine that the "redemption of the father" plot line will be a major theme in the new trilogy. And as Luke is now the head- or we could call him, alternatively, the "Father Figure" - of the Skywalker family, a sense of redemption for him for a real or perceived failing will be quite central, I feel. We know from Han (and with no "people who know him best think" preface- this was first-hand account mode) that Luke left because he felt responsible.
This would lead me to believe that he invested a lot of himself in training Ben and that he deeply cared for him, and that Ben's seduction by Snoke was due to some deep failure of his in teaching Ben.

We know the main part of his mission at this point is to rebuild the Jedi Order. Snoke has forseen this. Rey is the start of this. But I think another main theme will be Luke seeking redemption both through Rey, but also through Ben Solo's redemption. I'm pretty sure this is coming.

This would lead me to believe that Luke will survive at least until the 3rd Act of Episode IX. I could see him potentially dying in the 3rd Act in some act of sacrifice. It would be a very fiting end for his character establishing him as the greatest champion of the light. And with a redeemed Jedi Ben Solo and a Jedi Knight Rey Skywalker/Solo, he watches on and provides guidance as a Force ghost as the next generation of his intact family carries on the Jedi.

That speaks to the way fandom views Luke. Many people feel Han Solo was the best character in the franchise, but people want to see Luke. Where is Luke all over the the place. I think the focus placed on him by fans lends itself to potentially overshadowing the rest of the crew. Han by nature was a supporting character (whether a favorite or not) Luke was the lead, and the ultimate hero.

Luke will die a noble death...OR...he'll head off into obscurity to ponder the mysteries of the cosmic Force at the end of IX, but he won't be the savior.

The only thing that would bother me is if we end IX and Rey isn't prepared to start a new academy. I have to think that the reason Snoke wants Luke dead so badly is to end the Jedi tradition and set up the Sith/Dark Side users as uncontested rulers of the galaxy.

In China, movies are not permitted to have ghosts except in cases where the person seeing the ghosts is thought to be crazy. And since Disney wants that Chinese box office money, I don't think we're likely to see ghosts in future Star Wars movies - at least not in roles that can't be easily edited out of the movie.

Luke overshadowing the new characters won't be an issue in Ep8 like it would have been in TFA. Audiences connected with Rey, Finn and Poe - and will now be interested to see their continuing adventures. It will be much harder for Luke to steal the movie simply by being in it.

I really hope not! Would really piss me off if Luke dies.
But I do wonder how they are going to fit Luke in to the story. As it is Rey's journey I imagine Luke will have a mentor role like Yoda. But If Luke is the most powerfull Jedi alive, and he is responsible for Kylo Ren, why let a untrained girl face him?

If u follow the way it goes Qui Gon dies, Obi Won grows. Obi dies, Luke grows. Luke dies, Rey grows.

Im good with it either way- lives, dies. I just hope he doesnt get killed in VIII and that he doesnt die in some stupid way i.e. Obi Won flipping over Maul and Maul pausing the entire time until he gets cut in half or Obi once again in a fallen position yet shoots Greivous in the heart. Plo Koon getting shot down. ANAKIN BECOMING VADER BCUZ OF A MISSED JUMP?!?! God, those prequels. Good riddance George Lucas though we shall always love u.

I'm willing to bet Luke will sacrifice himself in IX, it would fit with III and VI:

    III: Anakin 'dies'
    VI: Vader 'dies'
    IX: Luke dies
