Oh yes. That's the critical audition scene that cemented Daisy in the role of Rey. But you're right--why?

My personal take is that the scene is at last in part a setup so we as viewers can plumb the depths of their fears and, in conjunction with the final duel, also their vulnerabilities in relation to each other...but again, to what end?

*mutters uncomplimentary things about mystery boxes*

Bwahaha! The Force bond would make all of Rey's subsequent Force abilities make so much more sense...

I went back and watched this snippet again. You're absolutely right! (I should have paid more attention to the script--I never noticed that weird little tic before.) Unfortunately we aren't privy to Rey's expression in that instant. Hmm.

Much of what he says can be taken that way, from possibly the fear quote to "You're so lonely...so afraid to leave" to "At night, desperate to sleep..."

Possibly, but I took it more to mean that they are familiar with the energy rather than with each other. But the energy could just be the trigger for the recognition.

Not so wild! I've thought of that...because every time after this weird statement--and perhaps this weird energy/feeling/tingly Force bond???--Kylo Ren's Force power seems to diminish in favor of hers. Of course, there are lots of other circumstances that could affect that too, so I won't get carried away with that, but...for me, that convergence would both highlight the mystical powers of the Force (which TFA seems intent on promoting) and heighten the conflict between the antagonist and protagonist. That seems very interesting in my book. I would love it if these two have to come to an uneasy alliance of some kind and have to find common ground in order to coordinate their Force powers for something, like attacking Snoke.

I just want to add that in the novelization, Snoke prizes Kylo Ren as his tool for the unique focus of Dark and Light within him. (Why Snoke thinks this, no one explains.) If there is some kind of specialness in the Force's Dark side-Light side unity or coordination that the ST is going to play up, then a "convergence" like this would fit the bill.

Well, obviously it is the map he feels with these lines.

 

Maybe it's the map that feels tingly. Maybe it has an anti-theft device that zaps people with energy if they try to touch it.
