Since Tarkin is my favorite canon novel, I say - read Thrawn first, then Bloodline which is also great.

As for Dark Disciple, if you like Asajj Ventress and Quinlan Voss and want to read about the complete corruption of the Jedi Order, read it - it was based on not produced episodes of The Clone Wars.

That was a very Zen, Yoda-esque answer, I like it. I'll pick up whatever one I see first. Is the Thrawn novel a character study in the same way that Tarkin was? IDK I've suddenly had some renewed interest in Dooku's character, has made me think it might be worth it. I get what you're saying though

What was it that you liked about both? See, that is intriguing me as well. Dooku's reasons for leaving etc, and what this illuminates about the nature of the order

    Rebel Rising

I think I'm a short story reader. I remember reading all the Stephen King's The Green Miles Serials (6 books) with allot of anticipation, always looking forward to the next one. I also like the Star Wars Tales/Anthologies like the Tales From the Mos Eisley Cantina. I love Jawas so denizens of those stories interest me allot. I enjoyed Guardian of the Whills and the Perfect Weapon. I'm really looking forward to From a Certain Point of View especially the story from Pablo Hidago.

I can't believe I over looked Dark Disciple, I think for me thats next, and Battlefront 2 Inferno Squadron.

Thrawn is a character study, not just for Thrawn but also for Arihnda Pryce (Governor of Lothal from Rebels) and Eli Vanto, Thrawn's protege. It's amazing to see how Thrawn's mind works, what his motivations are and also a few intriguing reveals. In addition to Leia's character, Bloodline offers a wider political picture, the state of the galaxy and the beginnings of FO activities. Also, has one of the most tragic character in the new canon.

The Jedi Order's fall is more shown through their actions than through Dooku's character. It is what they do, which is entirely contrary to everything they stand for, that reveals their failure. Their actions are not just clouded by the Dark Side, they are of the Dark Side.

I personally think the portrayal of "Jedi Order" in prequels is utter failure due to poor writing. It is contrary to how Jedi are portrayed in OT. Watching Kenobi, Yoda, and Luke speak of the Jedi in OT conjures a completely different mental image. They are spiritual guides, wizards who's talents are respected and who's council is heeded based on reverence, not political or military prowess. The single fact that a COUNCIL of great Jedi, each as powerful as Palpatine couldn't sniff out a snake in their midst because of "reasons" is beyond silly!

I really enjoyed Tarkin. Lords of the Sith and Dark Disciple are also definitely worth reading.

Haven't read a ton of canon novels unfortunately. I have read Dark Disciple and Bloodline though. Both are good but I did prefer Bloodline. I have a feeling when I get the chance to read Thrawn though it will become my favorite.

I really liked Tarkin, Lost Stars, Life debt and Empire's End. Tarkin is a interesting figure with a good backstory and in the novel you learn a lot about the empire. Lost Star is just a great coming of age story set in the SW universe. So much is happening in Life debt and Empire's end, the rise of the new republic, the final fall of the empire, the start of the new order and with great characters like Nora Wexley and my personal favorite, Rae Sloane.

I think almost all the new canon novels are worth your time but the novels I like the least are Heir of the Jedi and the first Aftermath. Heir of the Jedi is the weakest story, the first Aftermath is a average story with frustrating interludes. But The sequels are much much better so maybe you want to read Aftermath before beginning reading Life debt and Empire's end. Heir to the Jedi you can skip, no problem.

Pretty sure that was a deliberate tactic on Lucas’s part though. How does a society of enlightened minds fall for the ploys of a single man? By having their sanctimonious heads so far up their own collective asses they can’t see the forest for the trees. We only got to see two actual Jedi in the OT. Both had attitudes resulting from 20 years of self-reflection.
That’s really more an interpretation, yeah? Obi basically described the Jedi as space cops with ESP. Yoda only said they had serious minds and didn’t crave adventure. They were initially presented as political enforcers with magical powers and that’s pretty much what the prequels gave us.

I still think those movies are garbage, but the concept Lucas was going after with the type of Jedi he chose to depict, was close to brilliant (IMO).
