I personally think that flashbacks could be a very valuable asset to episode 7 if done right. 30+ years have passed after all.

Every now and then I read TFA rumours which suggest there may be flashbacks in the film. It doesn't particularly bother me but it is at odds with the storytelling of Star Wars films to date.

Do you folks think we will see flashbacks in TFA?

I still believe in my theory:

R2 somehow is seperated from Luke and is now with ROSE (Probably working in her pub... R2 has a knack for serving drinks).

The "flashback" will be R2's recordings, that go way back before the events of ANH, that's where we will see young Princess Leia.

R2 still has him memory intact...

Including the conception of Luke & Leia (though to access it, you need a parental code) :)

Force visions are visions of the Past, Present and Future. This includes flashbacks. Doesn't Yoda mention something about the Force and the past present and future?

Recasting our main heroes = no thanks, otherwise I don't see what the complaints are all about. Why does the Force Awakens have to be the same as the other movies? Flashbacks worked well enough in LOTR. If it applies to the story then go for it, but I expect that we will get a very brief force vision. Plus, I thought the expected pacing of the movie was to be just above the speed limit to stay close to ANH. Somewhat relentless minus Luke/Obi's crib scenes.

I'm so excited for this new trilogy that I can't imagine one simple flashback scene being too bad. If there are more than one it might wreck the pace though. It would be cool if they filmed a flashback scene and released it in the credits of another movie, as sort of a super teaser setup....then we could get going straight out of the movies opening crawl.

I think if handled properly a "flashback" can work. If it is just a scene portraying a past event or a scene that appears to be someone thinking about the past then it is lazy storytelling. If it is like what the MSW rumor portrays; the audience seeing a force vision that the characters are seeing and Rose telling us what we are seeing as if telling a story then it can be very effective and powerful. More so then a few lines of dialogue or words on a crawl. So while a traditional flashback would not work or not fit in Star Wars, a flashback-like sequencers described would work just fine and still have a Star Wars feel.

I think the poll is a little off because I don't believe flashbacks and force visions/holograms need to be mutually exclusive.

The precedent has been set for both visions and holograms. If TFA uses those, I'm all for it. (Although the group séance/acid trip/exposition dump still sounds wonky to me.)

But flashbacks...no. It's not that I don't love Lost style flashbacks. It's just that over the course of six movies, Star Wars has developed a house style...a language and visual style that you can understand as Star Wars. That means I seriously doubt we'll see any lens flares, bullet time or slo-mo action scenes either. Same goes for time hops. And if we do, well, it won't be the end of the world, but I'll seriously question that they picked the right people to helm this trilogy.

As for MSW speculation that there will be...well, I think it's very possible some scenes were filmed that will be edited into a 90 second force vision. So on paper, it sounds like a straight up flashback but in the movie it'll look anything but.

I think they can be done in a number if ways. Nightmares, visions, rose having the ability to show events, etc.

I think the R2 idea posted above is also a fresh take.

    But...

Why not make a cartoon series, or hell a trilogy, that tells whatever story needs to be told.

I'm sure even Harrison would be down for an easy voice check. If not, recasting the voice of Solo seems better than recasting all of the OT for flashbacks.

    Why not episode 7-9 animated??

    Or a series?

That would get a lot more attention than Rebels.

Just seems like they are wasting this timeframe and putting energy into a series most don't give a sh!t about...

The only logical way is to use that "flashback" scene as a detailed camera zoom in of a hologram OR make that scene the opening scene of the film and make it perfect that way

Better no flashback. Holograms and force visions IMO are more then enough to explain some relevant events of the past.
The idea of R2 showing some of his infinite registrations was always in my mind too. He had a great connection to Anakin in the clone wars, witnessed main events of the old trilogy... the guy knows a lot... maybe he need a better hologram system to show a clearer vision :)... The light of the projector, the camera moving around the hologram with the right music...IMO that kind of narrative tool could be highly effective and very emotional.
That said, if JJ finds a way to integrate a flashback and it fits the story, I'm open to it...

Oh, another idea... people sharing the same vision through the force, namely one force sensitive character who have witnessed the events and tells the story using the force to share his memories.

1 flashback is enough i think, but not 5 or more...
This new trilogy will focus forward.

It could also be some sort of a "Cave" sequence for one of our hero.
