So, if I interpret it right - some parts were taken out because they will be incorporated in Ep 8, and some will change.

it's a good point, i went in to the film excited to see Han, Leia and Luke again, i left wanting to see more of Finn, Rey and Poe

I think the new characters where better then any of us dared hope(except Phasma).

Having said that i hope they don't kill of Luke in 8, their is still so much more you can do with that character and i hope they make use of that before killing him off.

agree. However i think TFA makes it easy for him to say this.

after seeing the events of VII, I think they pretty much set up leia for all 3. There is literally no legitimate government in the galaxy now and both sides are at war after the FO broke the treaty. For leia to finish in VIII would either mean the end of the war (unlikely in VIII), or she dies in the war meaning the resistance in IX would probably be led by Ackbar etc making their story less compelling because we don't have a "personal" stake in that fight any longer (i doubt rian would go in that direction).

As for luke, i just don't see how he dies in VIII, he's basically yoda, to die in VIII basically leaves rey partially trained against two serious dark-side forces. Kylo is already ahead of rey in a training sense and if Snoke is going to complete that training over the course of VIII, she can't be miles ahead of him, meaning the majority of VIII is also about rey's training. Outside luke, there are no jedi, so he will be needed into IX then i think IX is where they send luke off.

So i don't think treverrow is really walking a fine and thus gives him enough room to say these types of things.

 

Its has to be a kind of redemption to all of the OT (Leia/Luke) characters though, even if that means their death.The new trilogy must have a conclusion in order to prepare the ground for the new one.

 

That would be consistent with what we know of his style. Spend more time developing your characters to make their actions more meaningful, and to give the audience a better understanding of their motivations.
