Not really buying into them one way or the other but, just as an observation, it's a time when the Sith are gone (as far as we know) and the Jedi have been reduced to Luke and a handful of (now deceased or in Ben's case co-opted) padawans. If you're an ancient evil waiting for an opportune moment when the board is thin on any serious potential opposition, this would be it.

Sounds a lot like ESB.... Yoda playing the fool initially.

I used to read the Shannara books by Terry Brooks (which begins, much like the ST, with a pretty shameless ripoff of another, better book). I stopped reading after that first tetralogy, but within his first seven books he included the "wise old man" character a few ways, including a man named Cogline who is retconned into only feigning being crazy in one of the books to avoid being pulled back into the life of wizardry.

There's also a scene in a later book where a main character is knocked unconscious suddenly and awakens to find a previous ally has betrayed her and is watching her intently. His huge, deadly bird with fiery eyes glowers at her. Brooks actually goes to the "character awakens to a former comrade creepily watching them" well a lot in those four books.

Obviously, "wakes up to find an enemy watching" is a pretty old device, but isn't used so much Luke doing it would be a cliché.

The "powerful evil locked away for centuries" thing has been done to death (in Shannara incidentally) like the Mummy, Suicide Squad, and dozens of other times.

A lot of the Rey-Luke stuff seems like MSW stuff fleshed out with familiar tropes.

I love how all these leaks introduce something but are intentionally mysterious so they don't "spoil it." Leak something or don't. Those kinds of cryptic halfway leaks all come off as BS to me.

And its one of the chlisés I hate probably the most (followed by the "random enemy from nowhere" chlisé). By that logic, almost every story which features some kind of villain could be continued at any time.
Hopefully they'll come up with something more creative.

    1. Reason it's been done to death is because it works

    2. There are only 36 dramatic situations.

    3. Nothing is truly original just done in different ways

I did not like any of the recent rumors, especially the ones about Luke. Hope most of it is false. :(

    Absolutely.

I'm sure Luke will have some quirks; especially early on; but I doubt he'll be portrayed as being "batshit crazy." Off will probably end up being the more suitable discription. But he's a 65 year old Jedi; the son of Vader, uncle of Kylo; he's seen/dealt with some stuff. It's to be expected that he's a little off, at least IMHO.

And bottom line, much like Yoda in ESB, I'm fairly certain that any of Luke's actions or anything he says to Rey will be a test or done in an effort to train her. I seriously doubt there will be much of anything "throw-away" about Luke or his role in VIII.

After all of the criticism TFA received for clinging too closely to OT themes and beats I think that there will be a real reluctance to repeat even more of them in Ep 8 and it will only be done when really necessary.

Something that Abrams said after TFA was out and many were asking why Luke was utilized so sparingly and moreso thru rumor rather than in person was that once you bring Luke the seasoned Jedi master that everyone imagines him to be into the picture, he ends up taking it over. That will still be an issue going forward. To prevent that from happening he will have to be diminished in some way other than just by his mere absence. Some other sort of foil will be introduced. Will that be his sanity starting to come undone? I have no idea. But there will be something. People shouldn't go into this expecting him to hear from Rey about everything the FO is doing and just say "Well let's train you up a bit so we can go right some wrongs together". I don't think that will be how it goes down at all.

    I agree.
My theory is he has been Force drained - a technique brought up in the novel Aftermath.

So Luke multi-classed from an Eldritch Knight to a Druid?

Oh, I agree. And I nearly put that in my post: that Luke's presence may overshadow the other characters, namely Rey.

And I understand that fans don't want another retread story, but certain tropes are hard to avoid. And this is SW, so certain elements and storytelling devices will be there.

Making VIII; or any future SW film going forward; feel fresh is probably Disney and Lucasfilm's biggest challenge.

Ep.8 will be fresh and new. RJ is not as media friendly as JJ and GE are. I think he is extremely confident in the story he is about to tell. He kind of reminds me of Lucas... I know that will frighten most... no word on re-shoots yet, and the soundtrack is being worked on, as well as the first trailer. We are all in for a big surprise come April and December (I expect all my Rey Solo theories will be wrong). I just hope he nails it.

He definitely has greater (or at least more noticeable) appreciation for classical and independent cinema, similarly to Lucas. This is especially visible when you listen to from what films he drew inspiration while making Episode VIII. 40's and 50's war stories, a Japanese samurai flick and a Soviet drama - something you don't hear to often while talking to a blockbuster director. However, what differs him from George is his approach towards actors. Everyone knows how bad he was at helping his actors develop his roles. Rian, thankfully, is much better at that. People say that TFA was their most awaited film in years. In my case it's Episode VIII. As long as Rian's allowed to do his job (and so far that seems to be the case,) we can expect something fresh, unusual and great.

Yeah. To summarize as briefly as possible, Eldritch Knights are mostly fighters who can cast a few combat-oriented spells, Druids are primarily spell-casters with a nature theme to their magic and who can usually summon animals to fight for them. Hence the metaphor.

From what it sounds like, Luke disposes of the other KOR without having to use his lightsaber - and if he does use it, he only barely uses it before confronting his punk-ass nephew. So that would indeed be an apt metaphor.

It's gonna be weeeeeeird to see what would typically be the climactic duel of a Star Wars movie happen in the first 40 minutes.
