Would almost assuredly mean a movie didn't have the support of the studio and they wanted to move on ASAP

The FO sure wasn't hiding in TFA.

That sounds very poorly thought out.
It's a big galaxy but you can't build something like SK and maintain an army like the FO in secret or without people taking you seriously. Especially when you're dressed and using the same tech as a recent government that dominated the galaxy for decades.

I never liked the "Luke Skywalker, I thought he was a myth" line, but this is even harder to swallow.

The chaos thing I buy to a degree, but are we to believe there's no VP or power center left on Coruscant? (Sorry if spelling is off).

This a galaxy that has had one central government or another for like 10000 years. The US has a contegency for if DC is nuked (and it's a lot cooler than that show)

This sounds like something he heard from a source who'd had a few cocktails.

Someone needs to do a "Fire Joe Morgan/Fun with Peter King" style article with a few JJ interviews like this one. They would be comedy gold.

The First Order was never hiding during the immediate time leading up to TFA. They were present and the Republic was tolerant of their presence because the FO was not being aggressive. Leia and the Resistance did not trust the intentions of the FO this the spilt from the Republic. The FO would cause minor trouble in the outer areas of the Republic and the government ignored it. A large part of the Republic was against any sort of military action against the FO. By destroying the Republic capital and most of the fleet with Starkiller, the FO declared war on the Republic. Now that is done, there is no need for the FO to hide their true intentions during TLJ.

I'm really not liking this talk from Jason Ward about the Republic supposedly being completely gone. I don't see that being the case. TPTB wouldn't take everyhing back to a total OT rehash by writing the NR out completely. Either he's speculating, or, as has been the case before, he is misspeaking.

For one thing, Pablo's Tweets have been hinting towards a NR presence in the ST, such as with saying that we "haven't seen the newest X-Wing model yet". If Jason hasn't just misspoke, I hope it's just speculation or false rumor. Because we can't just 100% undo the victory of RotJ and be stuck with another Rebellion copy. What will their goal be? To found yet another Republic?

I see this trilogy being more about rebuilding the New Republic stronger than before, saving it from the FO and its own complacency.

I see the Republic rebuilding during VIII, working in a fractured state with the Resistance, then coming back with a decent force in IX to combat the FO in a climactic battle that will make way for a much stronger Republic. I don't see it as being all over just because the capital and the main part of the fleet are gone. There are many planets left, and surely some portion of fleet, and military and political officials, left out there somewhere.

Plus, the Republic Capitol rotates is the thing. It's almost as if they did that as a precaution in case something like this happened. While the Republic is likely without a clear leader, it's not completely gone in the same way that the Empire didn't just end because a Death Star blew up.

I do think that we're going to see the Republic fleet, though - and that they'll be the suppliers for the Resistance as, for all intents and purposes, the small force we saw on D'Qar consisted of a bulk of what they had.

My take on the latest MSW rumor is that probably the new republic was more of a loose alliance of worlds compared to the more centralized old republic, and so was more likely to break up due to external shock such as the SKB attack. After the events of TFA, some worlds re-aligned with the FO, while others joined the anti-FO alliance aligned with the Resistance. Perhaps the anti-FO alliance had a more ad-hoc political-military leadership structure (similar to the old Rebel Alliance) instead of the usual senate-chancellor structure.

Just look at who created Centrist and Populists: Rian Johnson.

Centrists probably see snoke as a reformer and it wouldn't surprise me if we find out dubrovnik is either a core centrist world or possibly even a "swing state" the FO are trying to "woo".

While this isn't my preference for how they might take the Republic in this era, this would definitely make more sense as an explanation, if they're legitimately gone-gone.

Problem with them actually being gone is that the goal of the Resistance is so up-in-the-air in that scenario. What are they supposed to do? Become the "Resistance to Restore the Republic"? Too been-there-done-that. I don't see them doing that. I happened to see the R1 Visual Dictionary at the store tonight, and took a brief look at John Knoll's foreword, and something caught my hair: he said you that we can't just have nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. While some argue that TFA was exactly that, I disagree, and so do the words of TPTB who have been talking about the ST. TFA was nostalgic by necessity. We had to take a step back to take a step forward, for the new generation of Star Wars. This trilogy will definitely go a route other than what some, including Mr. Ward, presume.

Also, someone I talked to on the Star Wars Leaks Subreddit messaged him to clarify his article in relation to Pablo and others' hints towards a NR presence in the ST, and he basically said he didn't know how that fit with what they've been hinting and building towards, and that he "thinks [he knows] everything about a film before [he sees] it". So I think he's taking whatever sources he has, and adding his impressions from those, with his presumptions after TFA, to get to this point.

However, there is another theory, that wouldn't be as insulting or rehash-y as the "NR is totally gone" theory. This theory says they may need the rest of VIII to recoup, leaving the Resistance in a desperate place, a "dark time" for the net movie, then the NR will strike back in IX. This way, drama, story, and tension are all served, but without (basically) going all the way back to the old Rebellion, whose purpose was to create a new Republic. This time, it's saving the existing Republic (eventually with its help), rather than creating, from scratch, a New-New Republic.

Looking on Google's news page for TLJ, anyone sick of seeing "news" articles like this:

    "Express.co.uk - 28 Feb. 2017
STAR WARS 8 The Last Jedi will see Luke Skywalker give Snoke his scars and melt his face in a flashback scene, according to a new theory.
    "

I've been seeing these a lot lately and they're becoming tiresome.

"BREAKING NEWS!! Rey is going to lose a hand, according to a fan theory."

"BREAKING NEWS!! Luke to be revealed as Emperor's heir, according to a fan theory."

About four weeks from now they'll start priming the pump so to speak.

The entertainment press will be all over SWC but major news outlets will always be pulled in several directions so they need something to introduce SWC to their consumers gradually since they'll have some presence there too.

I'm hoping we won't have to wait until SWC for things to start heating up.

And worst of all, these "fan theories" all come from one guy... Mike Zeroh. Who has an extremely sh*tty track record at best and is a complete faker at worst.

At this point, I'm beginning to wonder if Mike Zeroh is a front for Lucasfilm's ad campaign to spread disinformation about their own movies.
