So, the new future of Star Wars will now feature 'celebrity' cameos. When did that become acceptable?

It didn't. Just a sign of the times sadly.

The only saving grace is that if these cameos are not obvious - like Craig's Trooper - then they don't take you out of the movie... which is my fear with the increasing tendency to cast 'knowns' in the franchise.

    why wouldn't it be acceptable?

Did Rian Johnson in Rogue One distract you?
Did Daniel Craig in TFA distract you?

No. and if you said yes, you're lying.

They aren't pausing and slow zooming on their faces. This isn't Stan Lee sneaking in to every Marvel film.

These are fans/friends of the movie makers. This has always happened in cinema.

Wanna take a shot at how many times Spielberg pops up in various ways of movies he produces? Blink and he's gone.

    What "knowns?"
TFA was 2 unknowns and an Indie darling.

What "knowns" were added to Rogue One?
Forrest Whitaker and his whopping 5 minutes of screentime?
Does CGI Cushing and Fisher count?

Woody is the biggest "known" in Han Solo.

Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness were very well-established actors before ANH. Guinness had won an Oscar for Heaven's sake.

This idea that you have to use unknowns for every role and that casting "stars" even for a cameo will "take you out of the movie" is one of those "I have to be upset about something" fan things.

Someone posted on here two years ago that TFA had been "ruined for them" and they "no longer wanted to see it" because it was announced that the London Symphony Orchestra wouldn't be recording the score.

I know the score for TFA wasn't one of JW's all-time greats, but no one anywhere mentioned a difference in the quality of the instruments or the sound mix when it came out. Lots of people have their little thing they want to freak out about, one of the more common is worrying that people are "too famous to be in SW" because it detracts from the realism or whatever.

People have put forth this idea because they subscribe to the myth that Lucas cast the OT with only unknowns (conveniently forgetting about Guinness, Cushing, and even Ford, who'd been in American Graffiti, a huge hit.)

BDW had been in Mahogany and Brian's Song (among other things) and so was pretty well known.

The magical kid from Game of thrones and Liam Neeson's son in Love Actually was in TFA. He acted. The film survived.

They aren't going to turn SW into the Muppet Movies from the 70's and 80's or Animal House or Spies Like Us or Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.

A few cameos are very common for tent pole movies like this, and honestly, most of us wouldn't have caught the Daniel Craig cameo until about the third viewing, or on at least until after the first.

Anyone who is afraid of famous people invading their SW should google "suspension of disbelief."

If Gary Barlow shows his mug and he's not in a stormtrooper costume then I will be distracted.

I think that you are bandying semantics in order to confuse and twist what was said by myself and a fellow forum member.

No, you said; and this IS the direct quote:

"So, the new future of Star Wars will now feature 'celebrity' cameos. When did that become acceptable?"

I answered. It was never not acceptable. Casting a few known actors has always been a part of Star Wars as well.

There's really no other way to interpret what you said.

So please, expound on your statement and explain the problem with having Daniel Craig in a stormtrooper suit or Kevin Smith voice one.

What is the inherent problem with Rian Johnson standing next to the beam from the Death Star?

The cameos to this point have all been done so well and non-distracting I fail to see how this is even a concern unless you are just complaining to complain.

If he does something stupid and it's out of place sure, but nothing they have done with cameos suggest it would be anything of that nature.

No, just seeing Barlow in the film will take me out of it whether he puts in an oscar worthy performance or not. If he's noticeable, be it serving jaws juice or playing in a band, it will take me out of the film.

I couldn't pick the guy out of a crowd and I'm sure *most* non European Star Wars fans couldn't either.
I guess I just don't get the vitriol

That's you having a Barlow problem, not SW having a cameo problem
    --- Double Post Merged, Mar 28, 2017, Original Post Date: Mar 28, 2017 ---
The directors of the last and next SW have made cameos in each other's films. I know what RJ looks like but have seen RO like five times and haven't spotted him yet despite looking for him every time.

I knew the Craig cameo was coming but didn't realize it was him until after the scene was over because it was a good scene on its own. I know what the Princes look like now, but if they're stormtroopers in TLJ they'll be impossible to spot unless they have huge speaking parts that don't fit the rest of the film. No one in America or the rest of the world that's not GB or a British military base will be able to spot their voices if they even speak.

Tom Hardy sounds completely different in RockNRolla, Dark Knight Rises, Legend, Layer Cake, and most of his other movies. Why? BECAUSE HES AN ACTOR.

I don't know who this Barlow guy is, but if he is fourth Rebel officer on the right or second alien from the left, most people who know who he is in real life won't notice him if the movie is even decent.

The only kind of cameo that would be jarring is the kind that's obvious and played for cheap laughs.

I don't think RJ has worked for years writing and shooting and editing this movie just to mar it with a stunt casting and easy joke with a D list celebrity.

I think that Pablo Hidalgo might have debunked the part about the Ahch-To birds being Convorees. Then again, he could have just been talking about TFA...

The cameo I'd really like to see in Episode 9 would be Gary Fisher. They could turn him into an Ewok baby or some kind of Space Dog. :)
