    In ESB, Luke knew where he was going and Dagobah was probably listed on his Nav.computer's astrocharts. As for what he needs a compass for, who knows? Locating a hidden/lost world in hyperspace? Navigating a labyrinth beneath some Force tree or similar? Or perhaps he just likes the look of the thing?

    I think the compass only has 2 options.

    Its literally just a compass when he wants to get around. It has no more significance than the Schick ladies razor they used to make Qui-Gon Jinn's communicator.

    Or

    It is special and is related either finding the Jedi Temple or in tracking the creature that Rey needs to face to be accepted by the tribe of Porgs.

    Well a compass could be used for other things. It was invented by the Chinese and used for divination. I did not know this but thought why not look up the history of it for some useless fact that might or might not be used in Episode VIII

    the compass may be a rip off from an old star wars game. Just speculation here. But the rumor is that it has a blue stone in it . There was certain compasses that could only be used by a force wielder. However, they were limited to their use. for example, you could find someone if you wanted to hurt them ie: you could not find Snoke to kill him. You could not find it for wealth. However, you could use it say if you made a ring and lost it you could use it to find a ring. Leia oddly enough wears a ring with two blue stones. So I am guessing the compass can look for that ring.
