Three years after her firing from The Mandalorian and other Star Wars spin-offs, Gina Carano is back knocking on Lucasfilm and Disney's door -- but this time, she's lawyered up. Carano filed a lawsuit for discrimination and wrongful termination against her former employers on Tuesday. She seeks to be recast, $75,000, and punitive damages.

A note to our readers: This story contains highly political matters which we usually do not cover on Star Wars News Net. We've done our best to cover it from the most objective point of view, but please keep in mind that public information regarding this matter is currently limited. Disney and Lucasfilm will issue their response through legal channels. A reminder that all comments on our site are monitored and any inappropriate comments will be taken down.

In the complaint, which you can read here, Carano and her legal representatives argue that she was 'terminated from her role as swiftly as her character’s peaceful home planet of Alderaan had been destroyed by the Death Star in an earlier Star Wars film. And all this because she dared voice her own opinions, on social media platforms and elsewhere, and stood up to the online bully mob who demanded her compliance with their extreme progressive ideology.'

They go on to say that this discrimination was done on the basis of sex, alleging her male co-stars have made similarly inflammatory social media posts that were ignored by Disney and Lucasfilm. The Hollywood Reporter speculates that this is in relation to Pedro Pascal's 2017 post comparing then-President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler. The complaint added:

They went on to add pages and pages of screen captures of users' posts on Twitter/X asking her to take public action in support of BLM and other matters including lockdowns and mask mandates enforced in light of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. After months of online exchanges, Carano's legal reps add that Disney and Lucasfilm 'subjected Carano to long phone calls demanding an explanation and criticizing her for not embracing what some see as mandatory solidarity with a vocal element of the transgender activist community. Even when she expressed that [Lucasfilm and Disney's] demands were excessive and asked for some time away from the constant meetings, [the companies] refused, demanding that she continue with her 're-education' program.'

The gaps may be filled by the legal document linked above. It claims that Carano's firing was announced via a statement to the press before the MMA fighter-turned-actress was even informed. At that point, the lawsuit says, Jon Favreau had told Gina Carano that 'her life was about to change'. Lucasfilm was going to develop Rangers of the New Republic which she would have been one of the leads of. (According to them, that would have meant financial compensations of $150k-$250k per episode, vs. the $25k she was making on The Mandalorian up until then.) No contract had been signed. Moreover, Carano says that Favreau had told her she was going to be a part of a new series of Star Wars movies based on the various Disney Plus series -- that series, they claim, included the recently announced The Mandalorian & Grogu.

    Carano's team seeks:

[*]Disney and Lucasfilm reinstate her to her prior position, with no loss of pay or benefits.
[*]A judgment declaring her termination was unlawful.
[*]Compensatory damages of at least $75,000.
[*]Compensatory damages for the loss of future employment in an amount to be determined at trial (TBD).
    [*]Emotional distress damages (TBD).
    [*]Punitive damages (TBD).
[*]Attorneys' fees cost and further relief deemed just by the Court
    [*]A trial by jury

Elon Musk promised last year to finance, sparing no expenses, any wrongful termination suit against corporations to those who had been fired for expressing their views on social media. Fulfilling that promise, Musk will be footing Carano's legal bill, per The Hollywood Reporter.

This is an evolving legal matter that will likely be resolved behind closed doors, given Disney's past fights with actresses like Scarlett Johansson (over very different issues). However, Carano is asking for a jury trial. The actress also posted an emotional message on Instagram about Carl Weathers following his passing on Thursday.

It's funny, when corporations express their freedom of speech, suddenly It's bad.

Technically was she even fired? The seems like it's DOA and it's just being funded because Musk is upset Disney pulled ads from the platform he's running into the ground.

She may have a case. Pedro gets to make political statements and keep his job, she does the same and loses it. She'll probably have to prove that she was fired over the statements and not just because they decided not to use the Cara Dune character anymore. Could be difficult, unless there's emails, voicemails, etc. Certainly interesting to follow.

Yeah, does "not being hired for more seasons/shows" = "fired"?

    Not sure.

This whataboutism doesn't really hold up. This isn't about making a couple of political statements. She was constantly talking about every divisive issue imaginable over the course of a couple of years. Pedro isn't doing that. I suspect we won't hear much about this "case" until it's thrown out.

And certain media figures were bragging at the time about how she would be hired the same day and get lots of work by "non-woke" studios. Such claims could hurt her argument for lost earnings.

    It's a transparent publicity stunt.

She wasn't fired for making political statements. She refused to attend a meeting at her work place with her employer and coworkers.

It just proves that, despite how they try to come across, sometimes certain people have a tenuous grasp of reality and adulthood.

If she felt she was truly fired for the wrong reasons. Why make a case for it now?

Failure to attend work is not a wrong reason to not be employed there any more unless you have a valid, protected reason for your inability to attend.

Apart from the obvious petulance from Elon Musk, the reason might be that all those non-woke acting roles have been used up. Or never existed.

This is a complete non issue. She wasn't fired, her contract just wasn't renewed, I am sure that happened to most of us. I wonder if Musk is pissed because Disney pulled all their adds of Twitter? Either way, this shouldn't even reach the trial stage.

In the meantime, if Disney wants to be petty, Cara Dune will suffer a fatal accident off screen in some book or comic.

Grogu will finish what he started.

Why sue Disney and Lucasfilm? Just makes it sound even more frivolous.
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 7, 2024, Original Post Date: Feb 7, 2024 ---
Ironically, she's saying Lucasfilm owe her money as a consequence of what unconnected people on the internet posted online about her.

I suspect you are right on both counts regarding the last bit.

I saw Musk on tv recently telling Bog Iger what he thinks of him....using an unmentionable word!

Hence why I believe this really is nothing more than an attempt to get some money and 'clean up' her name., by playing the victim. If this really had to do with being injured etc. she would have sued them right away. She's broke and desperate.

In California, you have a certain amount of time when you're fired to when you file a wrongful fired whatever it's called, I'm not a lawyer. So, I guess the clock was ticking?

And, as I recall, Disney had some serious issues with her comments after Season 1 of Mando. John Favreau stuck up for her and Cara Dune returned for Season 2. Fact was, he had big plans for her for a spin-off series. But when she did it again, there was nothing he could do. She cooked her own goose.

Anybody who has worked in government, the media, or the entertainment industry knows there are consequences to going public with controversial opinions.
