I'd be stupid to take a set of quotes attached to a toy line to draw any conclusions on the quality of TFA ! BUT ....... I couldn't help but feel a sense of awkwardness when I heard the lines delivered by the Kylo Ren face mask toy !

Maybe I'd set my hieghts to high , I'd imagined a far more nuanced , intelligent and morally ambiguise villain , an almost anti hero !

The quotes felt very immature , cliche and corny to me ! They reminded me of prequel ' whiny bi#ch ' Anakin !

i think it has to do with them being out of context, without the who, what, when and where they sound flat. it was a big mistake to let the first real lines of the movie be heard through crappy toy speakers.

Agree 100 % ...... But just using these quotes I feel like I can pretty much map out Kylo Rens entire arc for the movie !

Act one - Hell bent wrecking ball determined to wipe out the resistance and the Jedi

Act two - Frustrated figure , being constantly outwitted and out manoeuvred by a rag tag bunch of heroes , gradually becoming more unstable .

Act three - try's to turn Rey ... Fails , try's to destroy the resistance ... Fails . Failure leads to anger , anger leads to hate , hate leads to his demise !

    I hope it's not this simple !

and here is why it was stupid to let the first clips be heard from a toy that is not representative of the movie in vocals AND context.

I get it. with lines like "dont fight it. you know you cant'' its easy to say a line like that is a bit cheesy. but this guy is the face of the film for right now. his face is on almost all the packaging and posters. this is only a small sample of what the character will be.

The lines themselves I don't find to be out of tune (typical Star Wars dialogue) ... but the delivery..oh boy. He sounds as if he's reading from a script while half asleep. Maybe the force hasn't awoken yet when those lines are uttered.

I just listened to the toy quotes again ..... And it just hit me , I've heard this kind of reteric before ! Same tone , same shifts in pitch , same quick jumps from calmness to anger , same entitled attitude ....

Just add the mask and the cross guard sabre and you have .....

I don't see anything to worry about. Anyone judging the dialogue for TFA based on a few lines spoken by an electronic toy, is someone that is already going to see the movie. There's no danger of the movie being harmed financially or otherwise based on these toys.

I knew it - Rey was Khan all along. He never died, but only went through a space time portal to a galaxy far, far away. That's what they mean when they're talking about "the outer rim" and "beyond the galaxy". The Knights of Ren are the klingon-romulan hybrid hell bent on destruction. Finally one grand, unified, theory. Finally both fandoms are one. Di$ney can sell to both... unlimited $$$....
Ok, got carried away, yes the lines sound like crap

Maul was also front and center on all the packaging, I dont think it's a valid argument.

because the toys are the only thing we have to judge the dialogue by, when they give us something better we will use that, but for now it is our only point of reference.

There are two factors to consider here:

    1) I don’t really know how much dialogue Kylo Ren will have in the movie to begin with. But my best guess is it will be just a bit more than Vader. At the end of the day, this is a 2-hour movie. He’s not going to be a chatter box. So these probably are some of his most important lines.

    2) At the end of the day, Ren is still no older than 30. He’s not going to have great wise quotes. Kasdan wrote this. So there’s some trust with this dialogue. I think in context it will be better. Imagine you heard Han Solo go “I’ve got a bad feeling about this” originally from a toy.

The marketing has been boneheaded in many ways. If there was a synopsis and a trailer, with Kylo Ren speaking one or two of these lines, it wouldn't be so awkward, because then there'd be context. But I'll take what I can get at this point, so recorded toy audio without any context ftw.

Hopefully it makes more since when we see it in the movie. But it does sound cheap. He's speaking too fast. Maybe this isn't the real voice at all and the toy company had to make up their own based on written dialogue. That would make this toy more valuable being it doesn't actually have the real voice from the movie. No?

As much as I hate to be the voice of reason...

When you take disparate clips with varying cadence and emotion and juxtapose them like the talking Kylo vids we've seen, they can sound a bit ridiculous. This is probably due to the fact that Driver's character speaks softly at times, but builds to an angry and frantic pitch. Each line from those accursed toys seem to make the last one seem lifeless because they're out of context.

Anyway, let's take the IGN clip:
    • "Is it true? You're just a scavenger?" -fine delivery on its own.
    • "I've been waiting for this day for a long time." - seems like he's building to something.
    • "Don't be afraid..." -great delivery. Much creepy.
    • "I feel it too..." -deadpan delivery. Building to something or someone like Snoke has the juicy line. "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it?" "I feel it too...the dark side..." "Yes. The dark side...and the light."
    • "You know what I've come for" - almost casual. This may be Kylo's good cop routine before busting his chops with the bad cop. "You know what I've come for. It's mine by right. Just tell me where it is, hmm?"
    • "Don't fight it! You know you can't..." - there's obviously more to this line. "Don't fight it! You know you can't. It's your destiny, Rey."
    • "I'm immune to the light." - there seems to be more before this line is spoken. "I won't be turned as Vader was. I've been trained against the light side of the force. I'm immune to the light."
    • "That weapon is mine!" - seems like Kylo is arguing with Poe about why he thinks he should possess the blue saber. "what right do you have to take that weapon?" "That weapon is mine!"
    • "Together, we will destroy the Resistance and the last Jedi." - seems like Kylo is capping off an expository conversation with Hux.
Considering they chose to include the spoilerific 'you're just a scavenger?' line I don't think he actually has many lines in the film anyway. I would say a lot of the expository dialogue is spoken by Hux and Snoke.

Its star wars... Not shakespeare. Even Darth Vader's lines are kind of cringeworthy if you say them over and over to yourself again. These were taken out of context and probably edited so that no major spoilers were released.

Well based on similar toys from the past I would say jumping to conclusions based on the current crop of toy mask with recorded dialogue is pretty silly. Note the Vader and Maul voices are not the original actor's by any stretch and include lines that are not in any of the movies.

It'll take the full trilogy to appreciate Kylo, I think. All of this dialogue is him speaking with the mask on (you can tell by the reverb), but presumably he'll take the mask off at some point and become more than just a one-dimensional character.

I'm certain that unlike past toys, these new ones actually use the original actors. Captain Phasma, for example, sounds exactly like Gwendoline Christie.
Now ask yourself, would Hasbro (or whoever is making all this stuff) hire the actors to record lines for their toys, or would they get material direct from Disney/Lucasfilm recorded from ADR sessions?
