In another snippet from Empire Magazine's latest issue, the esteemed actor Ian McDiarmid shared his thoughts about Palpatine's return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Even though the topic has received many complaints and endless memes, McDiarmid thinks it is in line with the character, stating 'Palpatine always had a plan B.'

One positive aspect that McDiarmid points out about Palpatine's return is that he is now a recurring theme throughout all of Star Wars. McDiarmid explains how that is an honor for him and how not many movie villains get to have that level of importance:

Regarding The Emperor's return, Ian McDiarmid shared how he himself thought the character was done for. But regardless of his -- or other's personal opinions -- he provided his diegetic explanation as to how the character was able to come back:

Finally, in a bit of humor, McDiarmid was asked about whether or not The Emperor actually gets it on, if he did in fact have children. To which, the award-winning thespian said:

Over the past few days, many actors have expressed their thoughts about the series in Empire Magazine's 25th anniversary special about the prequel movies. Some of the recently featured actors include Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson. Expect more juicy quotes to pop-up as the issue hits shelves on February 15.

    "I felt that Palpatine always had a plan B -- probably a plan C, D, E, and F as well..."

So much for "overconfidence" being his weakness :D

I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him return in the forthcoming Rey film.

In some form or another. I'd be down for that. Makes sense for the character and her potential personal conflict.

Characters who stayed dead: Shmi, Dormé, Jango, Grevious, Krieg Lars, Mace Windu* and all those who didn't escape the purge*, Owen and Beru. Greedo*, Biggs.

    (*as far as we know).

Characters who came back (pre Disney): Obi Wan (voice1977, ghost 1980), R2-D2 (1977) C-3P0 (1980) Yoda and Anakin (ghosts 1983) the Sith from "extinction" (1999), Qui Gon (ghost 2005 off screen), Darth Maul (2012). A total, give or take, of seven returnees.

Characters who came back (post Disney): Palpatine* (clone 2019) Luke and Leia (ghosts, as expected 2019). Boba (2021 although George always expressed regret that he didnt have Fett crawling out of the pit in 83). A total of four returnees.

(*The character in the franchise already most associated with concepts of immortality and cloning)

They should have him come back as lots of little Palpatines like Ghostbusters did with Mr Stay Puft.

Natural escalation, like how TROS took one Deathstar and made a million of them - which was universally beloved.

What's scarier than one Palpatine? A whole army of them, of course. All with unfortunate complexions and extra zappy fingers, but with flashing weak points that will explode them when hit. ART!!

Even better, give him the Colin Robinson treatment from What We Do In The Shadows. You know Palpatine would love some Lego and a teenage Sheev would be a real handful

We need to see a de-aged Ian McDiarmid! Think about it...
    1. When he was younger he played older in makeup for ROTJ
    2. Then he played the 'younger' Palpatine at his 'real' age for the prequels.
    3. Now that he is older, all that is left is for him to do is go the other way and play a younger Palpatine.
It'd be like poetry or summink.

Personally, I will never not run to the theater (or TV screen) to see Ian McDiarmid portray Palpy -- young, old, or ancient -- or him in any role, really.
   (emperor)

I am so very, very down for delicious Palpatine wickedness, me!

He should be the main bad guy of every post-sequel era of Star Wars from now on.

He gets killed at the end of every episode, but he's back in the next one with no explanation like it never happened.

Basically what I'm saying is that he can be the Star Wars version of Kenny from South Park.

I would find the “Contingency” a lot more palatable if it had been mentioned even once in episodes 1-8. The issues with Plan B being illogical are a much smaller problem than the fact that they pulled it out of the sky without laying the groundwork. It is almost like saying they have been lying to viewers all along.

    Lying? What lie was told?

Tell us when a major plot point has groundwork laid for it in previous movies.
