Why do you think Luke had that emotion when seeing Rey again? I think he is still grieving over the loss of his Jedi Academy and his nephew turning to the dark side and seeing Rey again what do you guys think? I added a poll and tried to be as exhaustive as possible I sorry if I missed options just came home from seeing it and am tired.

Realizing that he's about to have to come out of seclusion and get back in the fight.

A lot of those things, probably. He didn't look overjoyed to see her thought, did he? Makes me wonder if she's really a Skywalker.

I kinda wonder if he's surprised. Maybe he thought she was dead; maybe he didn't even know that he had a daughter. I tend to think that someone other than Luke spirited her away from the carnage (A renegade KOR? Her mother? A runway student? Kylo???) and secretly dropped her off on Jakku as a last-ditch effort to save her life.

So many emotions were playing on his face, but not in a wild sort of way. He seemed to be carefully probing his feelings, not overcome by them.

Yeah, that definitely had to be on his mind. Looking down from the cliff, he seemed very somber.

Yeah, probably all of the above.. I think she may have been taken away, and her mother (Luke's wife) killed by the KOR.

I wanna know where Luke was tho, and how come he didn't stop them? Had it been set up by Snoke, that he led Luke elsewhere so he wasn't around to protect them? Did Snoke get to Ben BEFORE he went to Uncle Luke's Jedi training??

Most of these could apply. And, if Leia sensed Han's death, Luke probably did too + Millennium Falcon and no Han. Considering he is on screen for 10 seconds, Mark DELIVERED so much emotions. I need his picture for my new Luke avatar. :D

despite the last couple of scenes only lasting a matter of minutes... oh boy did JJ and Kasdan give us a lot to chew over for the next 2 years!

i loved the film.. but in particular i found the last scenes mesmerising. As Rey stepped off the falcon and was greeted by Leia... that look between the pair of them told us everything.... and nothing. it was a look of familiarity.. but maybe not.

then the final scene.. the emotion on Rey's face. scared, excited, confused. all of these? does she remember something? does she know him?

both the resistance and FO were trying to find Luke Skywalker. Rey was unknown to both sides, and yet after putting the map together and finding where Luke is... they pack her and Chewie onto the falcon to go find him alone? this speaks volumes, but i'm not entirely sure it spells it out for us in black and white.

I stupidly went to see the film to get some answers. all i came away with was questions lol, but i absolutely loved it.

I think that Luke felt the awakening in Rey who is his daughter that he knew was alive. I think he awoke R2 because it was her time. I do not think she was ever trained by him before. He is resigned to the fight now and he also wants to train Rey in peace

The look on Luke's face gave me a lot of personally. All of the above options for the poll potentially ring true but there was one thing I really took from his stare.

Instantly I felt him saying, "Oh no, you actually did it. I'm so sorry, looks like I will have to train you after all."

In combination with the reason behind Maz having the Lightsaber being unexplained and R2's sudden 'awakening' after Rey returned, I'm led to believe that Luke intentionally/unintentionally set this up after receiving some form of vision through The Force. I also feel he knows Rey in some way, very much the same way her and Kylo seemed to recognise one another.

This may all seem a bit far fetched but I can't help thinking Luke needed to find a Force user capable of resisting his/her first encounter with the Dark Side and ultimately passing the first test, much like Kylo did by murdering his father thus prompting Snoke to complete his training. I'm of the opinion Luke definitely knows of Rey somehow and that would make complete sense considering he would've been tracking down potential candidates for Jedi training in the years of his budding academy.

Perhaps Luke was afraid of training Rey after sensing how strong she was in the Force? Maybe he didn't want her around Kylo knowing he was a handful in himself? The way in which she grasped the Force in such a short space of time and almost seemed to be remembering how to use it also struck me as very important. She was executing abilities and combat skills we didn't see from Luke until ROTJ. I understand her background as a scavenger and as a capable combatant, but there's something about Rey and the glimpses into her past (particularly from the vision and meetings with Kylo, and finally Luke) that suggests she knows more than she thinks she does.

While Luke's expression carried so many emotions no doubt a consequence of what happened to his academy, Kylo, his relationship with Han & Leia, perhaps his wife etc. I honestly felt the most striking realization for him was knowing that Rey had just started on the same extremely difficult and terrifying task he not only completed, but has had to live with since ANH. Of course this goes against him 'setting it up' as it were, but lets not forget the Force has a major part to play here and perhaps Luke knew (based on his own experience) that no matter how much he tried to avoid it, the motions put in place were going to end up with that encounter with Rey eventually.

that's an interesting idea.. perhaps even WAS in the KOR but is now dead.

not sure if my mate was seeing things, but i haven't seen it mentioned anywhere so i assumed he was wrong.... but as we walked out of the cinema last night the first thing he said to me was "did you see the grave in the last scene with Luke? reckon that was his wife?"

Rey's emotions says it all. She is standing before a man she thought was a myth and he is broken. It was epic in my opinion.

That was Hamill's best acting throughout the series. I'm not being glib or ironic. He expressed so much that we need to understand about where he is mentally and emotionally in just a few shots and with no dialogue.
That was pain, a bit of anger, sadness, confusion. I hope we see Rey help him to return to the galaxy and try again to restore the Jedi order.
