After months of rumors and fan speculation, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has just revealed what the immediate theatrical future of Star Wars looks like at Star Wars Celebration London.

    Via StarWars.com:

    [gallery link='file' columns='1' size='large' ids='145214,145215']

There's a lot of dissect here, starting with the timeline for the entire Star Wars franchise as presented by Kathleen Kennedy before the trio of filmmakers took the stage. Check it out below:

Kennedy announced future Star Wars projects will be set all over the timeline, and this will apply to Disney Plus series as well as theatrical releases. Before we even get into the new periods that have been teased, we must highlight that the Old Republic era is being acknowledged, meaning that there are plans in place -- beyond the Knights of the Old Republic video game remake -- to mine that age of the Star Wars mythos at some point.

The 'New Jedi Order' period will take us past The Rise of Skywalker, starting with a film helmed by Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, exactly as reported for the past few months. Nothing was said about the writing talent, but we're guessing those reports were true as well, meaning that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson worked on a draft that's now being rewritten by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). And yes, Daisy Ridley is back as Rey Skywalker in a story set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, which definitely opens the door for other key characters from the sequels making a return.

[IMG] (L-R): Grogu, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Paz Vizsla (Tait Fletcher) in Lucasfilm's THE MANDALORIAN, season three, exclusively on Disney+. ©2023 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All Rights Reserved.

The news about a Dave Filoni-directed Star Wars film that will wrap up the entire 'MandoVerse' story arc, which is currently being told across several shows, isn't surprising either. Last night, renowned scooper Jeff Sneider -- who first broke the Lindelof/Obaid-Chinoy project -- claimed it was 100% happening, and he was right on the money once again. While Kennedy didn't elaborate on which film is coming first, we'll go with the idea that the Obaid-Chinoy-directed film is arriving in 2025 as reported before. This would give Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni plenty of time to put out more seasons of their MandoVerse shows before arriving at the big crossover film in 2027, just in time for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars. But there's also the possibility of Star Wars doing yearly theatrical releases again, so we'll have to wait and see how the release schedule looks once everything has been figured out.

The biggest theatrical surprise came with the announcement of a previously unknown project which will tell the story of the first Jedi even before the Old Republic era. James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) will direct what's being described as a 'biblical epic' that should look and feel totally different from anything we've seen before in the franchise. Years ago, we heard rumors that the canned trilogy from D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (Game of Thrones) would've explored exactly that idea, so maybe their preliminary work wasn't lost after all.

As for the in-development films coming from Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy, it appears they still haven't been fully greenlit by Lucasfilm and Disney, or at least they haven't taken the solid shape needed to secure a public announcement. Regardless, it appears that Star Wars is ready to make a huge return to cinemas in the coming years and expand its canvas in big and unexpected ways.

Very interesting! I love that all three take place in newish eras (or at least, not during the Rebellion or Clone Wars).

I hope I one day get to sit in a theater and see each of these... but I'll believe it when that happens.

edit: That said, I do really appreciate that these movies seem to have some direction already, and aren't just being billed entirely on the idea of the filmmaker behind them (ie, "Rian John's Movie", "Taika Waititti's Star Wars", "Benioff and Weiss", "Feige", etc.

At least there seems to be a little more proof of concept this time around, which makes me a little more optimistic, albeit cautiously.

I'm not really interested in Dave Filoni's project, but I'm really excited about Mangold's First Jedi porject and I'm especially hyped about Rey's return!

Mighty big day for him! Loving it!
Seems overly obvious, and far, far away... But still great to see him get the attention.

Right. It's only 15 years, and she was playing young anyway. Extremely excited to see what a fresh perspective and hindsight will do with the story.

I am waiting for them to announce the return of Finn as well; John Boyega was not so long ago speaking positively about DLF again, and Ridley said she'd only come back if he did...I don't know about Oscar Isaac though.

I think those negotiations were not done by the beginning of Celebration and Lucasfilm is probably been careful. Since they hinted that he is Force sensitive, his involvement would only make sense. I would love to see them back together on screen.

What a payoff THAT would be after all these years to have Finn be confirmed as force sensitive and perhaps join the order under Rey's tutelage. Even if not joining the order perhaps he could use the force in his own way. Just random thinking here. I'm curious to see what Shareem does with it although I'm not at all familiar with any of her work.

It's funny, I've been looking at other fan forums to see their reaction....one is full of people who are really hyped for this, most of the posters on the other aren't impressed. And before anyone mentions it - no, none of them are Kylo fans!

He's already been trained by Rey but has betrayed her and fallen to the darkside because he loves Rose but Rey has killed her in an accidental Force lighting incident. I mean it's obvious. ;)

Today is a good day. After all the whining the past two days, all the "negative nancies" look so insignificant when you see the thousands of fans in that room just EXUDING LOVE for all things Star Wars. I'm good with my Official Live Stream and all my friends here in The Cantina.

The Rey film is likely to be the film released in 2025. Mangold only started working on his Star Wars film a couple of months ago so it's a long ways away. Based on Lucasfilm's developmental record I'm cautiously optimistic, but I don't wouldn't be surprised if it never happens.

I thought thy might save Rey as a surprise, but branding it the New Jedi Order it makes sense to bring out Rey. I suspect we'll see Finn as well. He'd likely already be trained up, but it would be a good idea to announce that later as another surprise to get people hyped up.

It would be kind of awesome if Rey's new order is pulling stuff from the books in The Last Jedi that point back to the films that Mangold wants to make. That would be a nice tie in, but I won't get my hopes up too much on that front.
