Luke Skywalker needs a SON

that's good for you, but when your whole big non-surname family sees you as if you are an outsider, you may get a different view on this. But yes, this is just personal for me and people may have better experiences with this than me.

...should probably fix my calendar. Seriously though, the fact that this thread exists in 2016 makes me physically sick.

 

No, Luke doesn't need a son. If we go by surnames if Luke had a daughter she could take his name and have her carry it and if she has child they also take the name.
Kylo is a Solo by name, even if he has Skywalker blood. I don't see that he would take the name either.

 

Like I previously posted, the way I see the Star Wars Saga as a whole... is the story of Anakin Skywalker and his children. If the first trilogy focused on Anakin, the second one on Luke... the third one could be Leia's.

And I am not talking about having Leia as the central character (my respect to Carrie Fisher but no way in 2016 you would sell Star Wars with Leia as the main protagonist). My feeling, from the start, is that SOMEHOW, this new trilogy revolves NOT AROUND REY... but KYLO-BEN SKYWALKER-SOLO. And like Luke did in ROTJ by turning his father back from the Dark Side... this time around, Leia will turn her son back from the Darkside at the end of Episode IX.

If Luke redeemed his father before he died (Destroyed the Emperor and his Empire), Leia will redeem Anakin's legacy and memory by turning back Kylo (Destroying Snoke and the First Order).

If I take a good look at my crystal ball, here is how I see it unfurl:

- It has been established in TFA that Kylo still has a conflict within him between good and evil. This will be more explored in the next two episodes. Adam Driver is a good actor and was brought onboard because HE is to become the central character from this trilogy. I foresee that the relationship between Kylo and Rey will be the main trigger of these conflicts. Either there is a strong relationship between the two (Love? Family?), but we will see that relationship brought to a new level in Episode 8 to reach its Apex in 9. Is Rey Kylo's cousin? Future lover? Sister?

- Leia will be the one that will bring Kylo back from darkness by sacrificing herself. Maybe that'll be done after Kylo kills Luke, but she still has that part of her story arc that is not closed yet. By doing so, Kylo, or Kylo & Rey destroy Snoke. But I am pretty sure Luke is done at that point, all hope is lost, Rey is in a really bad position and Leia does something that turns Ben.

So I don't think Luke has or will ever have a son, the Skywalker heir is Ben. Who is Rey? That is the question. She could also be a Skywalker, and also be descendant of Anakin Skywalker. When Ben & Rey walk under the sunset, it could be as brother & sister, cousins or lovers.

 

This is the most depressing outcome of this trilogy for me with Luke dead and done already in VIII and leaving no legacy.

 

Whomever gave this a "pessimistic" rating needs to get a life. Great post.

I don't see where it is pessimistic. The third Star Wars trilogy (I remember back in them 80s) was to become Luke's sister story. Of course, this was Lucas' plan, even before ROTJ and Leia wasn't Luke's sister at that point in George's mind. There is ANOTHER Skywalker... Leia's role as a Rebellion leader has been explored already... now, her character could expand as a MOTHER and a JEDI-FORCE USER. And that is a fact that she is the mother of Ben and like it or not, will have a role to play in her relationship with her son in the next movies... come on, it cannot be ignored... moreover, her son killed his father. So BEN is the extension of LEIA... and this could be the heart of this new trilogy.

why? It sounds terribly depressing and pessimistic. No single positive outlook for Luke in this post.

Luke's possible death in this trilogy can only be compensated with a daughter or son to be revealed. Don't forget Luke was the main hero in the OT and now he is relegated to an unimportant and sidelined character who is easily killed off after hiding on a planet for years?

Luke was the only one in all the movies who always used Skywalker as his last name, yet, there are still a few of them. I can't believe that this is still an issue for people.

 

When Luke dies and has no offspring, the Skywalker name is definately gone.

 

Just like Yoda. A person's legacy isn't their children. It's the things they did while they were alive.

 

ok, then it is worse for Luke with the state we see him in TFA after years of hiding and not really much time to fix anything.

 

Luke is still alive. So I'm not sure how that's worse that Yoda who saw the entire Jedi Order wiped out and the end of the Republic.

 

like @Darth Malkovich and others have said, Shmi is the original Skywalker DESPITE being a female! fancy that!!

for the Skywalker line to continue Luke and Ben share equal responsibility. if Rey is also a Skywalker by blood then she too is responsible for carrying on the line, just as much as Luke and Ben are.

if we assume Rey is a Skywalker then her kids can take the Skywalker name without it being an issue. if you start hating on Star Wars because of silly real life traditions like who gets whose name then surely you're missing the point.

besides, what if Rey gets pregnant magically, like Shmi did? she'll be a celibate Jedi AND have children! that would take the venerated @MarsPhoenix excellent mother-Jedi vibes a step further, which i'm totally down for.

hmmm, this is supposed to be funny, but at the same time kind of sadly the truth right now.

 

If Luke had a son, they'd name Barry Sue because it wouldnt be revealed right away. I personally dont see the need for a family member right away because it needs to be done in a very clever way if he has a son because it didnt' happen (or was it hinted at) in TFA
