You people are failing to understand that Star Wars is rooted in tradition. I could name many parts of the Star Wars universe that are old-fashioned. Tradition is that the female adopts their husband's name when marrying him. This is why some people have a problem with Luke not having a son.

Like the Star Wars tradition of Padme Amidala and Leia Organa taking their husbands' names?

Padme had to keep her marriage a secret, and Leia is referred to as Organa Solo if I remember correctly. So she did adopt her husband's name.

Leia is referred to in TFA as Leia Organa or General Organa. It's right there in the crawl. The "tradition" you're referring to doesn't exist with our main SW female characters.

    1. I'm pretty confident I have read her referred to as Leia Organa Solo in several canon books.
    2. Were Leia and Han together in TFA? No.

Actually in the Old EU Leia still went by Organa and I think only changed to Organa-Solo so Rey could end up keeping Skywalker or change to something like
Rey Skywalker-Starstriker. also Rey doesn't have to get married and change her name. perhaps she is the last Skywalker (provided she is a skywalker). But Luke having a son could be cool.

    1) Legends. In canon, she is referred as Leia Organa.
    2) They were married in Bloodline and she was known as Leia Organa.

We don't really have proof that they never did anything. But we also don't have any proof that they did. Therefore it's possible either way at this point. At least until Obi-Wan says I am a Virgin.

Luke can have many sons and daughters by simply passing on what he has learned. A father doesn't have to be blood and he can still pass on the Skywalker legacy.

I don't have a problem if Luke doesn't have a son and I would be very happy if he has a daughter. What counts for me is that Luke has a kid at all who I can follow into future adventures. ;)

If he doesn't have a son on screen so be it, we would have to go through a scene of how they became estranged I don't think Rey would want to hear it.

Traditions earthly or GFFA are fine and all but Kathleen Kennedy made it a big deal that women are moving to the forefront so I don't think that hanging your hat in traditional name convention will necessarily will hold.

Lucas himself also adopted children so he has lived with the idea for a long time that family is closer a heart thing than a blood thing or a name thing. I have no doubt that the Skywalker name will go on but adopted children with no last names (Rey?), children born into the family, become titles bestowed on heroes, ect.

There are a number of ways that the writers can go unmoved by our insistence of keeping naming traditions or abandoning them.

They were technically still married per the novelization and screen notes, they had been separated for a few years (Bloodline was 6 years before, so it was sometime after that, but clearly it had been a while.) It was never in canon that she took his name. Only in the old EU.

Anyone can have a father figure, so it is quite the same. Anakin told Padme Obi Wan was like his father.

And I'm talking future with Luke. He will have students again. Particularly Rey

I hope not only Rey before he dies, since this would be a complete repeat of the OT.

I didn't mean only Rey. I just meant as his main student at first.
