Yes its very confusing am not sure what to make of things. All I know is that a film has been filmed. I think that somethings may have come out which is true but there is no clarity & its a huge mess. Lines have been deliberately blurred sending out mixed messages. Its like a picture book with no words. I don't know whether to be optimist or a pessimist, my view of the film changes daily

There has to be a lot missing in that synopsis. The individual acts either don't have a notable start or end with a transition or I need to read it again. I think that's why it sounds so busy.

Off the top of my head...

    TPM:
-arrive on Naboo, leave for Coruscant
-arrive on Tatooine, find Anakin, escape to Coruscant
-return to Naboo, defeat Maul and the Droid Army.

    AOTC:
-arrive on Corascant, assassination plot unveiled
-Lenobi discovers clones, Padme and Anakin "fall in love"
-meet up on Geonosis for final battle.

    ROTS:

    -battle of Coruscant
    -battle of Utapau and Grevious
-Anakin betrays the order and falls to the Darkside (very long third act)

    ANH:

    -events above and on Tatooine
    -Death Star escape
    -battle of Yavin

    ESB:

    -battle of Hoth
    -escape from Hoth and Yoda
    -Bespin

    ROTJ:

    -Tatooine
    -prepare for Endor
    -battle of Endor

Looking at that description of TFA, I only have a legitimate first act that blurs into a second, then, a potential third.

Most of the rumors are dealing with the intimate character arcs and not the galaxy in conflict. How those intersect is going to be key.

I'm sure there is LOTS missing. I remember Jason saying that the Falcon escaping the sand planet was the end of Act One, but other than that I had to guess at what fit into the other acts. I just figured everything on the sand planet was Act One, the stuff with the freighter, Green planet, and rebel base is Act Two, and the final battle in space and on the Snow planet is Act Three. I may have scenes out of order and I'm sure many scenes are missing.

I think the biggest problem with trying to make all these scenes make sense is that we only really have a series of scenes and not a plotline to tie them all together. We've heard everyone wants to find the lightsaber, they want to find Luke, Kylo wants to kill force sensitives, etc. but we don't really know which if any are true or why they are important.

Wow just read all that. Some stuff eerily spot on so far. Am not bothered by the 'chick lead' but the rest, its not easy reading is it? Worrying times ahead methinks. Thanks for all the links, they seem to corroborate a lot of stuff and loose ends. Am sitting tightly but very, very nervous & anxious now.

I don't remember the "Escape from Yoda" part.... but that would have been fun :)

That would have been a great track on a John Williams soundtrack.

    Cheers ;)

Hey Jason, since this is your thread and all, just out of curiosity, was there a particular reason that you felt it necessary to find 11 posts of mine on the same day (February 27th) and give every single one a dislike?

I'm legitimately curious @MakingStarWars because I let our issue drop concerning the whole "why should we believe these rumors about Luke when you've had so many prior rumors that greatly contradict it" argument we had.

I'm hoping this hasnt turned into a vendetta. Feel free to PM me if you think that's better. Surely we can come to some understanding.

Have a good day, Mr. Ward.

If this is accurate we can assume the Empire hasn't changed TOO much other than possible new leadership. It looks like they aren't just going to pack up and quit. These novels will be very interesting because they basically act as a very extended crawl in a way. The description is from Barnes and Noble so I assume it is accurate but still pretty vague.

I would assume this will finally settle the "How did the Empire survive?" complaints

The Phantom Menace is essentially a remake of A New Hope, so I'm not sure why this surprises anyone. Everyone should read the Star Wars Ring Theory essay to get a better understanding of why Lucas always says (paraphrasing) "It's like poetry, it rhymes".

What's funny is most poetry doesn't rhyme, not since prior to the invention of motion pictures. I can't even think of an American poet who writes in rhymed verse who isn't considered a children's author. People deride the quote with good reason, but to be fair to Lucas it's common for poetry to have internal thematic "rhymes".

Agreed, this is actually an important reveal. I think the speculation that the Empire has lost its hold on various territories due to the vacuum of leadership and the opportunistic power struggles this causes is probably correct. Will be interesting to see if they've lost the center and been pushed to the outer rims.

Does this all seem like the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire is going to be indefinite, extending far beyond the Sequel Trilogy? Much like the comic book 'Legacy' era set a century after Episode VI essentially kept the same factions in name, but juggled their constituents and inverted allegiences.

Really? I don't see the similarities.

The Phantom menace is about two already been heroes who go on a mission, get side tracked and bailed out of a situation by a young kid who then doesn't factor much into the plot. A New hope is about a young boy who answers a call to action after this guardians die, then teams up with a guy to save a princess before a segway to save a planet from blowing up.

The only similarity I see is the "death of a mentor" trope. However, Obi-wan sacrificed himself and Luke doesn't go on to fight Vader (immediately thereafter) that is.

Can you give me some parallels?

It is lame if they enshrine the Empire as the eternal enemy and antagonist of Star Wars with the sequel trilogy. Best case scenario is that this movie is the last gasp of the Empire.

You can see disagreement between Kasdan and Lucas as to what happens after Episode VI right here in terms of an idea.

But this particular novel takes place immediately after ROTJ and is 30 so yrs before TFA.

Not for me. Having the Empire still exist and hold any kind of power is far fetched. And only serves the purpose of making an excuse to have the Empire the enemy and feature stormtroopers as bad guys and have tie fighters.
The Empire still being powerful after 30 yrs is unrealistic. And please don't make the roman empire comparison. The Empire was an empire in name only. Palpatine was basically Hitler and the Empire = nazis.
Anyways the only way having the Empire in this and it making sense is if they are a smaller organization fighting back against the Republic who are now in control.

I don't know, there's still a vast, galaxy-wide governing apparatus in place at the end of Jedi. I agree the death of the Emperor alters what the Empire is -- it's likely that the regional governors and other opportunistic players and factions compete for power. We're looking at a compromised, fractured system that is no longer unified and optimized for domination. But you can still have an "Empire" run by the technocrats and military, with or without a charismatic leader, even if its power is no longer total and the term "empire" has an ironic tinge to it, with significant territory and power shifting to the alliance, independent governors, and mafiosos like the Hutts.

Anyway I agree it's not the Empire as we knew it in the OT, but the end of Jedi could very well have been the start of a new terrain of conflict that has played out over decades.

Actually, I do believe that the Star Wars Ring Theory posits that The Phantom Menace has more thematic rhyming with Return of the Jedi than A New Hope (two obvious examples of this are the Pod Race/Speeder Bike Chase and the overall end battles); however I always noticed these similarities where TPM and ANH were concerned:

The introduction of the hero (Anakin/Luke)
Call to Adventure (Leia' Message/Qui-Gon's Offer)
As you already noted, the introduction and death of the mentor character (Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan)
Triumph over the labyrinth (The attack on the Droid Control Ship/Death Star)
The end celebration scene and seeing the hero mature as reflected by a change in their appearance

Look I teach history for a living, massive empires don't collapse overnight just because a powerful central ruler died.

Exactly. When Hitler died his "empire" was already collapsing, and regardless the Nazi regime isn't comparable in scope or power. We're talking about an already established GALACTIC empire, not a country overreaching its ambitions via an unsustainable military build-up and small network of alliances. You remove the central leader of a galactic empire, and you still have billions (trillions? quadrillions?) of executives and middle managers and grunts and citizens etc who benefit from its rule and are invested in keeping this apparatus functional, or exploiting it to their own ends, not to mention just the inertia of such an all-encompassing and fully entrenched system of rule. Systemic collapse is a real phenomenon but we're looking at an internal redistribution of power and a shift in its external relations of power, with the empire losing territory and influence to the alliance, independent governors, and other ambitious players. Realistically, the post-Jedi galaxy features an empire fracturing and in decline, but not collapsed, even over the course of decades.
