It was a horrible strategy, she was a little girl and she had to work hard just to survive on that hellish planet. She would have been better off virtually anywhere else in the galaxy. If I remember well (it's in a book), at one point she got hurt while scavenging and she had to stay home and starve until she healed. No scavenging meant no food for the day. Just a truly horrible life.
I never heard about that theory, but it can't work. Rey was already on Jakku when Luke was training Ben Solo. Which means that at the time he still had his powers. Unless he trained him without powers? That's unlikely.
And Lor san Tekka....if he was supposed to protect Rey why was he so eager to commit suicide by Kylo Ren? The man just wouldn't stop talking, it was like he wanted to die!

Luke is a powerful Jedi master, how could anyone take his daughter without him knowing? He would sense her from across the galaxy. Yes, I know that Vader didn't sense Luke and Leia, but he was clouded by the dark side. Luke is not.

Wait, I can't remember if he could sense he had a sister or not. So I don't know if you're being sarcastic and implying that he couldn't sense her, which would mean that he might not be able to sense his daughter either. It that what you mean? Because it doesn't work. Regardless of what happened in the OT, he should still be able to sense his daughter. He was young and inexperienced back then, but now he's a Jedi master, probably one of the best who ever lived. He's the son of the chosen one, he stood up to Palpatine, he's as gifted and as lightside as he could possibly be. He would KNOW if he had a daughter, and where she is, there's no fooling him.

So, the theory is when Luke went to investigate something in the outter rim he was attacked/betrayed by Ben and Snoke(In the novelization Leia's last call from Luke was cut off with a strong electrical interference.) This is said to be an ancient Sith weapon that actually absorbs the force(essentially force drain) and was used on Luke. It's the only reason Luke had to retreat and seek out the first Jedi temple. :)

That's a very interesting theory. It would explain why Luke was unable to sense that something horrible was about to happen, and why he couldn't defend the young Jedi :)

I'd love this theory as long as we don't go through the entire episode 8 with Luke not having his powers. haha That said, Luke will always be the wisest Jedi as far as I'm concerned and it would be a cool dynamic that he train Rey without his powers. It would also be cool to try and defend Rey without his powers..You wonder if it would make Rey question Luke as she only knows him as a myth. :) !!! Mind blown.

Is it possible that the person Maz is referencing is not Luke... but rather someone else who came to Jakku then left Rey... FINN? Perhaps Maz is saying that Rey already found a surrogate family on Jakku in the form of Finn, BB8 and the Resistance. At this point in the movie, Finn is loading up supplies onto a ship to take him far away from the First Order. This is Star Wars and you do have to take what people say with that "certain point of view" mentality... sometimes.

The person who could come back is Ben. After Maz tells her to take the saber there is a whisper "it's Ben."
