I don't know if you already discussed about this topic.

During the 'Future Filmmaker Discussion' at Star Wars Celebration Director Rian Johnson mentioned some movies which "influenced" EPVIII:

    - Twelve O'Clock High
    - Three Outlaw Samurai
    - Gunga Din
    - The Bridge on the River Kwai
    - Letter Never Sent
    - Sahara

Theses movies are really old and classic ones. I haven't watched theses movies (except of Tweleve O'Clock High) but I looked up what these movies have in common: war, leadership, fragile alliances, survival and redemption.

At the the Celebration Stage it was told that Johnson was having his crew watch these classic movies because they had elements he wanted to apply to VIII.
This is really interesting to me, what elements was he referring to? I'm really looking forward to comparing these movies to EPVIII.

What do you guys think about this?

The Bridge on the River Kwai is a classic everyone should watch. I'm going to re-watch Twelve O'Clock High because it's been awhile since I've seen it, but there's an element of the Resistance in that movie. They were the only Americans fighting in Europe at the time.

TFA didn't establish it well, but I expect that the First Order will have the upper hand and will be the invading/occupying force. This is a contrast to the original trilogy.

This also means we're probably going to see a lot of battling in space. Good news for Poe/Finn fans.

the "fragile alliances" has me really curious.

big alliances? like large-scale fracturing within the existing organizations?
or little alliances? character relationships between characters who don't trust each other?

we've heard some rumors about the state of the Resistance, about Luke, about Kylo Ren and Rey, about Finn and KMT, about Poe and Leia.
and there's been a lot of wild speculation that the Stormtrooper just program isn't all that it's cut out to be. so many ways for this to go!

Gunga Din and ThreevOutlaw Samurai have being captured, going on a mission and being rescued in common.

Gunga Din is interestimg because he tells about a temple made of gold and when someone goes to it they are captured and it is up to their friends to rescue him.

Sounds like all these movies have the bad and good working together. And lots of seperations and rescuing. Tests and trials

Fantastic thread, and an important one. I think the key to Episode 8 is right there in this list. We still have time ahead of us to watch these movies and figure out which element from each of the movie will be used to construct the next Star Wars movie.

    Great thread, let's play.

...Sahara isn't that old as it's a movie made a decade or so ago with Mathew Mconahey and Penelope Cruz .

Did he take inspiration for the story from them or for other things? the river kwai movie interestingly has Obi-Wan Kenobi in it qnd it's about blowing up a bridge or something like that so maybe parts of this one have to do with some sort of self sabotage

As far as I know he was inspired by them.

Also for bridge over river kwai it's about not trusting your allies. I think VIII will be alot about those you thought you could trust can't be trusted.

Maybe there IS something to those Laura Dern Reddit rumors if we overanalyze this...

Some of the Laura Dern rumors come from MSW which have been reliable in the past

I agree. Lucasfilm appears to be doing a better job keeping info locked down this time.

Rian was referring to the original Sahara movie from 1943.

I agree, I will try to watch these movies in the near future.

Two themes of theses movies intrigue me the most:
    1. two sides fight for the same resource and even have to work together
    2. redemption through betrayal

Will we see Rey and Kylo working together? Will Kylo get redeemed because Snoke betrays him?

    So much to speculate about...

Why on earth would Disney pay sites to reveal major spoilers and essentially the entire plot of the film? If the leaks were false, then that would make sense. But they were all accurate.

Most of the big story leaks from TFA came after filming was complete. The closed sets do a fantastic job of keeping things secret, but after filming a lot of different eyes see the footage.

Yeah, the leaks will come during post-production. I'm sure we will get several legit leaks next year.

Rian said that He could see alot of 12 o'clock high the most in VIII. The synopsis for that movie kinda goes along with those rumors.

But you're right we could overanaylize these to death

I watched Twelve O'clock High yesterday. It's been a long time since I've seen it. It's a fantastic movie about leadership.

It's about a unit with low morale. The pilots don't know what they're fighting for or if they're even making a difference. Their commander is their buddy, but he's unable to hold them accountable so he's replaced. The new General is a hard case. He holds everyone accountable and is very strict. All the pilots wish to transfer, but eventually he wins them over by appealing to their pride. The unit is turned around by his leadership, but it takes a significant emotional toll on the General.

How this fits into Episode VIII... not sure, but I think it's safe to say that we're going to learn a lot about the Resistance and the chain of command. The rumors about the power struggle between Poe and Laura Dern's character kind of fit with this line of thinking.
