I have no clue but it's genius marketing...I mean, if the audience likes it, then keep it, but if not...throw it out and rewrite.

Aren't all/most these movies penis fests?

I'm just saying your industry has a very serious addiction to men/male supremacy problem and you (Rian Johnson) need to be a part of the solution.

Rian Johnson's own filmography is pretty crappy when it comes to women. Ram Bergman's is a bit better at least.

Rian Johnson said that much of Twelve O'Clock High had made it into Episode 8. Does this mean that Episode 8 will be a war film with a focus on the relationships within the Resistance and First Order militaries? Does this mean the main characters will be Leia, Poe, Finn, Wexley, Hux and his crew and only minor characters will be Luke, Rey, Kylo and Snoke? If Luke and Rey are not the focus of Episode 8, many fans will be disappointed. If we don't see Snoke training Kylo, many fans will be disappointed. Does the introduction of the Laura Dern character suggest that the internal politics of the Resistance will be one focus of Episode 8?

The worst thing they could do is waste too much of Rey's time on this Ach-To planet. It shouldn't have any more time than Jakku did in VII unless they decided to be idiots.

I think the part of Ep. 8 plot involving Leia, Poe, and the Resistance will draw a lot from the plot of Twelve O'Clock High, but I doubt the entire plot of Ep. 8 will be similar to that of Twelve O'Clock High.

It's interesting that in the movie Gunga Din, the evil cult leader sacrificed himself in order to free his followers to fight the "good guys" without restraint. If they do something similar to Snoke in Ep. 8, it will be quite a plot twist, since currently we are expecting Snoke to make it to the end of the trilogy like Palpatine did in the OT.

The author of that tweet and the blog analyzing Letter Never Sent is the queen of the Reylo shippers. She is very intelligent though. I might be guessing here but I'm sure her analysis will touch on how Love Never Sent indicates that ship as a possibility or makes it more likely if Rian has chosen that film as an inspiration.

i haven't seen the film (nor read the book) and have only a general idea of what it's about, but i'm guessing it has more to do with the message Leia tried to send to Ben about Vader than any romance. i still feel like he possibly never got her message and that it may come back to impact him as a result.

it's a theme of not knowing/understanding a person except through a previously lost glimpse into the past.

Nope, you'd be wrong. Nothing to do with shipping in there...

I made it mission to watch as many of the movies listed by Rian Johnson. I recently saw four of the titles listed. Twelve O'Clock High, Gunga Din, Sahara, and Letter Never Sent. After watching these four I have to say I am more excited about Episode VIII. Some common themes I saw in these films.

Each of these movies dealt with either/or military groups or expeditions forced to work together in extremely tense situations where everyone is pushed to their limits. Sacrifice plays a big role in all these films so I think it is safe to say Episode VIII expect a key death or two. As mentioned before the cult leader sacrificing himself in Gugna Din would be an interesting story arc for Snoke making Kylo Ren the official big baddie in Episode IX.

With the exception of Twelve O"Clock High stationary MacGuffins played a key part in the plots of the movies. In Gunga Din it was a temple of gold, in Sahara it was a well in the middle of the desert, in Letter Never Sent it was a potential diamond mine. I would be surprised if a key part of Episode VIII dealt with some form of stationary MacGuffin rather than the more mobile map that Episode VII dealt with.

Twelve O'Clock High is a fascinating character study movie about military leadership starring Gregory Peck. I recommended watching this film. I am guessing Twelve O'Clock High plot will play heavily in the The Resistance storyline with Poe and X-wing pilots. It is also an excuse to get Leia in a different role. If you read Claudia Gray's Bloodline you will know Leia is a good investigator and spy. Rian Johnson had input in that book so I could see her separating from The Resistance in order to track down the MacGuffin possibly with Finn(?).

Going by bits of possible spoiler I've heard/read the influence of Twelve O Clock High could revolve around...
Poe being seen as too close to his pilots to command by some in the allied republic military. He complains some mission they are given is too dangerous to BDT who then goes to Dern who gives command to BDT. BDT then treats resistance pilots now under his command badly and moral plummets. Poe being relieved of fighter command frees him up for adventures with Finn and I'm guessing either BDT redeems himself by the end and dies in combat or is an enemy agent. Haven't decided on that

The first three sentences of that spoiler fit Twelve O'Clock High well. The difference in Twelve O'Clock High is Gregory Peck's character uses leadership that first causes morale to go low (which it already was but because of heavy losses) but then whips them into an elite fighting unit that rarely takes losses. The character keeps his emotional distance until... well I would hate to ruin Twelve O'Clock High.

For some reason, I thought it would be Leia being replaced by Dern's character and BDT being the person who gives command to Dern's character. Who knows? It sounds a great story arc idea. Plus, in the EU novel Bloodline Leia is written as a great spy and investigator. It wouldn't be hard to believe after the death of her husband and the betrayal of her son that she would be asked to step down temporarily.
