    Sith:

Some dark sider maybe “Bane” learned how to use dark side to transfer his essence into living or material things upon death. Ultimately, after establishing the rule of two, the Sith take on a powerful apprentice in hopes they will eventually grow powerful enough to destroy their master. Master will discard apprentice that fail or die. Once an apprentice is powerful enough to destroy his master they doe so and the Master’s essence is transferred into the apprentice who becomes the new Master who now posses both his own and his previous masters knowledge of the Force.

By the time we get to Palpatine, he is essentially possessed by all the previous Sith, having their knowledge of the force and having been powerful enough to destroy his unified Master. Since each apprentice must defeat their very powerful and knowledgeable Master, each generation of Master become more powerful than the one before. This is why Palpatine and all previous Sith sought out to find the most powerful apprentice they could find to replace them. They continue life through their apprentice.

This explains why the Sith Master is so much more powerful than an average Force user. Yoda was able to obtain a somewhat equal knowledge of the force because of his species long life span and affinity to the force through midichlorians.

The transfer of a dark siders essence or “Soul” into another living creature requires a moment of hatred, fear, anger that often occurs when killing.

This is why I think Rey absorbed all the Sith upon killing Sidious and will need to deal with it. Darth Intagregret?

    Force Ghost:
Highly Force attuned and trained Jedi that learned to transfer their essence or Soul into the Cosmic Force allowing them to continue in the force and materialize around Force conduits including, Kyber Core Planets, some rare Force users with high mediclorian counts or strong attunement with the Force formed through knowledge and practice. Also, large concentrations of Kyber and other nature force conduits.

Death Star would have been such a conduit due to all the Kyber Crystals and presence of Sidious and Vader. Anakin and Luke would find it easy to communicate with Force Ghosts.

The stronger the conduit, the more a Force Ghost can manifest in material world.

Both Light and Dark side have methods to evade final death.

Jedi build their temple around such conduits.

That's actually why I think she did not, because she did not kill him in anger as she was supposed to.
I would actually like it more if the apprentice does not know about this and the master just takes over the apprentice's body (and knowledge). So Palpatine is actually Darth Plagueis or more precisely Darth Bane who found out about that mechanism.

    Interesting ideas. I like it!

    Particularly:
And the concept of dark siders being limited to possessing or inhabiting material things upon death, versus light siders having the ability to be more "free" and well... ghosty. Very appropriate.

The former concept is explored heavily in the recent novel "Shadow of the Sith" which was a pre-cursor to the ST, so you certainly may be on to something there. I highly recommend the read (or audiobook) I loved it.
