SPECULATION My own theory about Kylo Ren

    This is pure speculation, not based on any rumors or leaks. So no spoilers here!

    I've had a theory for a while now about something that might happen to Kylo Ren. In TFA, he wore a mask even though he didn't need it for any medical purposes. He did this to hide his identity and, more importantly, emulate Darth Vader. In the trailers for TLJ, we see Kylo slam his mask into a wall. We also see the broken pieces of the mask laying on the floor. One could surmise (rightly or wrongly) that Kylo no longer wants to wear the mask.

    My theory is that after Kylo decides he no longer wants to wear a mask, something happens in either TLJ or E9 that results in serious bodily injuries for Kylo, similar to what happened to Anakin. Then he will be required to wear a mask to survive. Hence the mask he once wore by choice to look more like his grandfather becomes something he is required to wear against his wishes, making him in fact like his grandfather! Oh, the irony!

    Thoughts?

    While it's an excellent theory and yes, VERY IRONIC, I think that LFL will avoid that in order to avoid the appearance of re-hashing the Vader story. That's me...

    the took him out of the mask because nobody in their right minds is going to leave a face like Adam Driver's obscured.
    to the point that Rian Johnson risked backlash from fan continuity freaks by moving Ren's scar so as not to make him look "stupid".
    very doubtful they'll put him back in a mask.

    Yeah, I realize it could be seen as a rehash of Vader's story to some degree. I think it depends on how they do it (if they do it, of course!). We'll see.

    Obviously I am not of the "Ben Solo must be redeemed!" crowd. I would prefer to see him be a tragic character. Darth Garth mentioned Shakespeare in this thread. I would like to see Ben/Kylo be a tragic Shakespearean character.

    Initially, I was one of those "THAT SOB MUST DIE!!" people as soon as I watched him kill Han, but as time has gone on since then, i'm coming to the conclusion that LFL isn't going down that road...the family has to go on. I expect that we're (maybe by the end of IX) going to see Ben on his knees, broken and weeping as he takes stock of his life...what he's done...his family is gone...and he did it all to himself. He may actually become a Jedi and join Rey on that journey (not as "Reylo" either) and be more of the "Grey" type of Jedi where the good in the end will justify the means...regardless of those means.

    Yeah. I think we are to empathize with him, but that's about it. He's chosen a path, and for better or worse. He has to play it out. I think Kylo knows that too. Anything else would take away from him being a tragic figure.

    Yeah, I am not saying that Kylo should die. I don't he should. But we should see the tragedy of Kylo Ren play out. If he ever gets redeemed, it should not be in this trilogy. In this trilogy, he should go down the dark path. At some point, I would like to see that be against his own wishes, where he knows he has done wrong but it is too late to escape the consequences of his own decisions. Kind of like a Greek tragedy character that is doomed to be tortured in Hell for eternity because of his own actions. This could be a counterpoint to a Sith lord like Palpatine that revels in his evil and enjoys every minute of it.

    I interpret the importance of the mask a bit differently. To me, the mask represents the persona of Kylo Ren, and without it it represents Ben Solo. So when I see the character destroy the mask, then I believe the persona of Kylo Ren is destroyed along with it.

    i like it! i think that would be a great way to conclude his story and the Skywalker saga. i'm in!

    i'm also one that was seriously hoping that Harry Potter would die in Deathly Hallows... i've got a thing for those tragedy vibes.

    I think it will happen but in a different way. Once Kylo and Rey get together at the end they will share an intimate scene in the private quarters on the Millennium Falcon. Then Rey will say to Ren, "You know that mask you used to wear...how would you feel about putting it on for me?".

    Ren will of course comply and I'm guessing the safe word will be: "Bantha Poodoo".

    I could be wrong.

    Good theory. But people always wear masks even if it isn't a literal one. Kylo's gonna wear many masks. I think he's done with the literal one and won't ever need it again, but I believe he will get many more scars.

    although tumblr is quite insistent that Kylo Ren and Hux have been in a tender loving relationship for years, so who knows what to believe.
