Or if you do disagree with them, politely state your case. Personally, I love to go back and forth with people, as long as everyone is civil. I've even been known to change my mind!

I think there should be a "friendly disagree" I also would love an icon of Luke hand for "its not true, that's impossible" maybe friendly or neutral. The Second part being a joke, but I've personally disagreed and want to disagree but it feels so negative and mean so I don't.

Haha, that is a really cute idea. Or Leah saying "What?!?!" (as when Alderaan was blasted). Friendly disagreement, that would be nice. I like that idea a lot.

I was thinking there might be a lot of good from being able to give multiple rating marks. There have been many times when I wish I could give funny-great, or off topic-dislike, or clouded-like. Maybe give up to 2 marks per person, per comment.

It would allow for a bit better characterization of how people are feeling about something.

Honestly, anyone who gets upset over "negative" ratings on the internet needs a reality check. People can negative rate me all day and I couldn't care less! My god, how did we ever manage to come this far as a species with everyone finding new ways to be offended and butthurt by everything ALL of the time -- and now it's on the internet, the one place where you truly can speak your mind and never face physical retaliation, the one place where we can have truly free speech and thought?

People who take issue over this kind of thing come from very pampered and spoiled lives, you would think.

Reminds me of those idiots at those colleges recently....

    This is also appropriate:

Really, who cares if you get negative ratings or not? Or positive ones or whatever....it's silly. And none of it -- ratings given or ratings received -- should be grounds for punishment.

LOL! I love those South Park videos. Actually, this whole season has been really good. (This last one on the cops should really make people think.)

Anyway, people who don't like negative ratings aren't necessarily offended by them. I, at least, don't blame people for leaving them. It's the rating system that's a bit out of whack because one shouldn't get a negative rating from someone who dislikes the post. I should be able to leave a dislike if I want to without someone getting a red mark.

And those red, negative ratings do serve a purpose because the mods don't want to have to give someone the boot for being an ass, and having a high percentage of red marks can help people be less so. For people who are paying attention, it's negative feedback, which should help diminish bad behavior.

But, I agree with you that a lot of negative ratings might just mean a person has unpopular opinions, which is an entirely different matter. That's the problem. It doesn't distinguish between jerks and people who just have unpopular opinions. And it should. A person should be able to speak their mind about whether Luke is a sissy whiner or whatever.

However, the truth is none of us have free speech in this forum, it's a private website. They can make whatever rules they want, and generally rules that encourage people to be civil and respectful toward one another are good. That's not being pampered and spoiled, it is being a decent human being. And decent human beings respect others' right to an opinion, even if they strongly disagree.

Maybe we should just change the "dislike" button to "butthead" and that would solve the problem. But right now people use the "dislike" when all they mean is "disagree" .

That's true, but I'd imagine those same people would probably use the "butthead' button for when they disagree too -- too often people dislike someone who disagrees with them these days too, so maybe they DO dislike the people they disagree with, in which case I guess the rating would make sense.

Anyway, I agree with pretty much everything you've said. And yeah, this season of South Park has been awesome! I loved the school paper episode this week, that was hilarious...

Sorry @Bandini, I couldn't resist publicly "disagreeing" all over your suggestion for silent disagreement! :p

I see nothing overtly negative about disagreement, dissent, or dislike - these elements (along with diversity in general) are a strength of any community and should be encouraged.

Consensus isn't possible let alone desirable and I'll take any "dislike" from ignorant, incorrect, or sociopath posters as a compliment.

I looked of an "agree" symbol but apparently didn't have the option... ;)

Note: Having an "agree" button may remove the awkwardness of wanting to "like" sad or tragic posts that may not be intrinsically "positive".
