Before I say anything, I need to make it clear that I feel like Disney and JJ Abrams did a fantastic job with TFA, the movie was made the way it was for a reason, and I support that.

However, I would like to address the superweapons in Star Wars, and discuss the possibilities of us ever seeing bases/weapons in future films that aren't in giant spherical form. After reading and viewing tons of reviews on TFA, it feels like the one complaint that most people share is the similarity of Starkiller Base to the previous Death Stars.

Do you feel like Starkiller Base is the last giant spherical superweapon or will we see more? Did you like Starkiller Base? What would you have preferred to see if you didn't like it and what type of superweapon would you like to see in Episode VIII and/or IX (if any)?

I feel like the concept of Starkiller Base was unique as it required a star to absorb energy before it could make an attack. The only problems I had was that...
    • it was stationary (it seems as though it would have a limit as to the distance it could drain a star, and would eventually run out of stars in its quadrant of the galaxy)
    • the size of the star it was pulling its energy from didn't seem to matter - Poe states that as soon as the light goes out it would be charged. But what if it's pulling energy from a star that's 500 times larger than the size of the star it was designed to drain - would it only partially drain the star? I thought it would have been a nice element for Kylo Ren or Hux to demand that Starkiller suck the energy from a much larger star due to their lust for power and desperation in their attempt to defeat The Resistance, which would have resulted in an overload and the base self destructing.
    • I also didn't like that they used the "size" comparison - "The Death Star was this big, but Starkiller Base is THIS big."
    o O <--- ehh...

I know we can all say "I would have done this or that" but the decision wasn't ours. I'm still pleased with the outcome of TFA, but a simple change to the design of Starkiller base would have made such a tremendous difference (to me).

I made this concept earlier as an alternative Starkviller. I thought it would be cool to have a giant ring that sucks the energy out of stars, charges it like a super collider and could then travel to a different location to launch the energy.

I also thought it would be neat to have a weapon that could travel through an asteroid field, collect asteroids, jump to hyperspace and release them at the target at light speed... I can't really think of what it would look like, but I'll keep throwing some ideas around.

Does anyone have any unique ideas for a new superweapon?

I'd like to see a lack of super weapons so they have to go "oldschool" and put troops on the ground and fight ship to ship.

I agree with this, no more super weapons. Just tell the story. You have an organization for good and one for evil. Let's just go with a Resistance vs First Order story because the galaxy is already at stake. That's good enough for me. We don't need Death Star 4.0 to get that message across.

In war, it's important to call out that a weaponization achievement an enemy obtains becomes a capability impossible to ignore. (the introduction of gun powder, the invention of tanks and of course nuclear bombs). I think it's sound that a super weapon will always be pursued, and the ability to destroy planets is Star Wars' thing.

That said, I really don't want to see Death Star 4.0 (and I accept Starkiller base largely because I can believe the first order is mimicking the old empire to succeed). They should have learned the lesson by now - Death Stars have weaknesses, you need a new strategy.

A few ideas to through into the mix:
    1. The weapon they attempt to use on Naboo in the comics is interesting. (a satellite system that creates extreme weather, and wipes out the planet in a few hours) http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Naboo
    2. Early leaks of the TFA script suggest some sort of battering ram.
    3. For something completely new: A weapon that can redirect asteroids / asteroid fields. Star Wars has a fun history with asteroid fields anyway.

Hi there Cassidy.Your post is a GOOD one.My opinion is that i like very much Star Killer base.It looks more EVIL than the Dead Star.I know it was really BIG than the Dead Star BUT this thing can blow away 5 planets at the same time.I wish that there are more options of super weapons BUT it looks that the BAD GUYS ALWAYS do this. They blow away planets that are against them. Also they have a huge ARMY in the movie. This time you can see a LOT of soldiers(General Hux Speak)....They WAS a lot...But the StarKiller base (epic fail)and they are ALL dead.I think that we are going to see another one BUT different. This time the planet will move in space and travel at light speed too...:).Sound crazy BUT you knows....

I didn't like the Starkiller, because it was a DeathStar 3.0. For my second viewing I came with my father, brother and his son. Father likes such movies and I decided it'll be fun to show TFA to my nephew, and eventually my brother came too. Brother isn't a fan of SW at all, he knows it, but doesn't like it much. He's also quite a rationalist (army officer after all) so there were few ironic remarks pointing out inaccuracies or sillyness in the movie. But when he saw Starkiller for the first time - he just laughed. "ANOTHER deathstar?! Oh my God, that's pathetic!". It came from no-SW fan, so he may have been more unbiased than many of us. I was also waiting for something more unique, having almost identical superweapon for the THIRD TIME and also destroyed quite easily by only a small bunch of fighters AGAIN for the THIRD TIME - it was silly. Silly beyond belief. Also it looked like this "superweapon" was meant to shoot only twice. First when it destroyed Hosnian Prime and second when it was about to destroy Resistance base (I mean, again? That's almost the copy of the scene in ANH). It sucked everything from the sun which went dark... so there should be no option to fire it for the third time.

As for superweapon... actually I think it's quite a cheap theme. Like all those unrealistic superstrong "bosses" in video games. I don't need a superboss or superweapon to enjoy game or movie, because I care more for a good story. Imagine seeing a superstrong nazi mutant in the final battle in "Saving private Ryan" or Magua suddenly becoming overpowered boss wielding indian magic (who can be killed only by combo of specific indian spells followed by shot directly in his weaker left eye) at the end of "The last of the Mohicans". That would be terrible and would ruin these beautiful movies.

    But...

I would acept something more mystical. For example dark force artifact that would make a Snoke a demigod or influence people at distance, forcing others to obey him. Or anything else making enemy powerful with his mystical abilities but still quite fragile when comes to his physical body. Emperor Palpatine was clearly powerful, he had entire Empire under him, but was killed by falling down the shaft, nothing truly spectacular. DV simply grabbed him and tossed into shaft. It was much better than many "boss fights" in other movies. Also Vader was strong in his final duel, but he wasn't all-powerful and unstopabble.

I would also welcome an idea of powerful weapon (for example device capable of crushing planets by throwing a singularity at them though people would surely say it's too much ST influenced) but mounted on a some sort of SSD. It would still be a formidable enemy but also able to be destroyed in conventional battle - without "oh, this weapon is so huge and intimidating that it's almost impossible to destroy, be we managed to destroy three of them already so fourth won't be a problem too" feeling.

Or something different - a new and surprising device not used for mass destruction, but for example a device capable of shutting down systems on all enemy ships in the vincinity, ship having impenetrable shields and armor and capable of smashing through other ships or something like that - somthing new, surprising, not able to destroy planets/suns/systems/entire galaxies, but something smaller, but smarter - and invaluable when used right.

I don't know what screenwriters are preparing for us in VIII and IX, but if it's some sort of a Deathstar 4.0... I'll just laugh myself.

Blowing up planet is a tremendous waste and tactically nonsensical.

if you're looking to dominate a galaxy, conquering planets, not destroying them, should be your objective.

You can destroy a population without destroying an entire planet, thus enabling exploitation of the planet's valuable resources and the acquisition of the conquered people's wealth, military technology, etc...

Why not simply blast radiation at a planet, killing off the populace? Or biological weaponry? You create the same amount of fear and political control of the citizens without wasting away the entire planet.

I like that concept. It looks cool.

But I think the super weapon should be the force. And both sides can use it.

If they have to have a super weapon again... which I hope they don't.... but if they do your concept has my approval.

I am perfectly fine with Starkiller, and accept that the First Order is punching up. But I agree that we shouldn't go there again. I also think we need to stay away from any kind of Force-derived weapon. That would be a disaster.

I'm through with superweapons in Star Wars. Literally Episode 1, Episode IV, Episode VI, and Episode VII basically had the same template for a giant thing that needed to be blown up in a space battle. But if it has to happen again, I'd be down for a Star Forge.

Something that could create a massive star fleet rather than a large weapon that can destroy planets and/or galaxies.

Why not, if you're going the superweapon route, have a kyber crystal with corruptive power that the First order uses as an anti-ark of the covenant, carrying it from battle to battle leading the populous to tear itself apart. Or maybe, why don't they get into the politics of a deathstar weapon. Have them proliferate like nukes.

I almost feel like if JJ hadn't done Into Darkness, the super weapon definitely would've been a giant Star Destroyer for TFA. Unfortunately the USS Vengeance would be way too similar for this to work.

Instead of a giant ring, how about a small one? One that's small enough to fit on your finger and makes you go invisible. Snoke already had one...
