I'm not against the idea of a super weapon in 9... but I want to see a change in pattern compared to what we've seen before (no more super lasers that destroy planets).

How about an ancient weapon. Something hidden on korriban. Maybe a dark energy machine. That can alter the galactic flow of the force. So a dark sider corrupts the force. Once it critical mass the effects are permanent.

The "Galaxy Gun" concept, which if I recall was from a 1990s era Star Wars novel(plot) sounded intriging. ;)
I think that WMD could travel though hyper-space, destroy a target then retreat back thru hyperspace in a few seconds before the enemy or the designated target could locate it.
It would be fast, deadly and hard to track or destroy like a huge Death Star or massive object.

A ECM type weapon would be practical for The First Order. They could destroy ships or fry space craft without any major damage to planets or the environment.

Predictions for TFA included a concept for a Resistance EMP super weapon that they used against Starkiller Base. I would like to see the tables turned and the Resistance debate using their own super weapon.

I would have expected that the use of a Resistance WMD or super weapon could have caused a serious division within the different groups & maybe even Luke or Han.
"General" Leia may have become more aggressive or pushed for more advanced weapons in the 30-35 year period.

Maybe she's been building one basically since 30 years have past that even the resistance doesn't even know about that can't be stopped by ANYONE including the resistance/NR/FO ?

As weapons evolve, I wasn't surprised by Starkiller, but I've envisioned a weapon like the Phantoms from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within that was in one package, undetectable and delivered clandestinely and when detonated left all living things dead, and everything as a ghost town and still intact. I always thought that THAT would be a terrifying weapon to use on a planet as a demonstration of power to the rest. Just my thought... :)

I thought Starkiller base was quite original. The death star II, that one was unoriginal. In time you will understand.

As for a new superweapon in the next movies: the force.

I think it would be cool to see a superstring weapon. It would be subtle, and consistent with the energy field that "surrounds us and binds us together" language of the Force, but it wouldn't be a Force weapon.

If everything is made up of tiny strings of energy vibrating through 11 dimensions, most of which are wrapped up smaller than the Plank Length, you could have a weapon that essentially acted like a giant tuning fork. The "musical note" that the string vibrates at determines if it manifests as an electron, neutrino, quark, etc.

Strike the magic frequency and you cause the strings to vibrate sympathetically. Instead of an opera singer hitting a high "C" and shattering a crystal goblet, the weapon would cause all of the matter to go through a phase shift and be turned into hydrogen, or gravitons, or whatever you wanted that would sound the coolest and make for amazing VFX.

The force as a weapon, never for that.

    Force Taint.

Time to bring "balance" back for the average galactic inhabitant by sabotaging these power-nutters from laying waste to the galaxy with their petty star wars. Let's see how much damage these smooth Sith talkers and moody Skywalkers can inflict without their precious super weapon. ;)

    Outta cover Stetynoseu's suggestion too.
Nice idea! And maybe they already have it: HIERARCHY backed by FORCE and VIOLENCE. Pretty hard to disobey that heady mix if you aren't on the top...

No more super weapons. I'd rather see battles that take place on land, air, sea and/or space. Mix that in with personal conflicts.

Yeah i'D RATHER SEE THEM ALL HAPENING AT THE SAME TIME...maybe even a vehicle that iscapable of flying through/underwater, on-land, and in deep space that's just TEARING through the battle...

It would be interesting to see a non-force faction or a force-sensitive character (like in the KOTOR) attempt to sabotage, taint (poison/corrupt), destroy for good, or render useless an individual or groups access to the force. I don't know how or why, and SW without The Force certainly wouldn't be SW for long so it would have to ultimately fail. Just brainstorming here... It could make a good leveler for a little while.

maybe something that just supresses any and all things that have to do with the force.

    Yeah, something like that.

I know The Force permeates all living things but I believe The Force Unleashed had an ex-Jedi character whose connection was lost or severed. It might take the form of Magneto's helmet (Sith Mask?) for an individual, or instead of an Interdictor Cruiser creating a gravity well/illusion of mass or whatever they do, have a ship that can create a temporary void in the force around a certain locale. I think a Timothy Zahn novel also had some kind of timber linings in a wall that absorbed Force energy or rendered a force user incapable of accessing Force power.
