Vaders hand surviving is far more plausible than Lukes although I don't really like either one to be honest. Assuming it somehow survived the fall down the shaft, a stretch of fiction to be sure, it could have been blown into space with the force of the explosion of the death star. That thrust surely would be enough to escape Endor's gravity. Now the odds of someone finding it? Well I like the force but that's like looking for a needle with the number 23 ectched onto it on the planet Jupiter. The odds that it would be ever be found are so remote as to be near impossible. Still its a better theory than Lukes. It still needs to be explained why this would cause the story to move forward. The awakening of a sith Master causes a story to move forward, a hand clutching a lightsaber to me does not without further explanation.

There was a really bad EU book where the "adopted son of Palpatine" finds Vader's glove in the wreckage of the Death Star and appoints himself the new emperor. He thought the glove would give him Darth Vader's power to force choke people, but instead he uses a device to shoot fake Sith lightening. He was also had a third eye for some reason

Why is it that we think that the lightsaber will instigate the adventure with no explanation? I sincerely doubt the movie will start with them finding the light saber, saying “huh this looks interesting. let’s go on an adventure to find the owner”.

If the empire is chasing it, and it is an important McGuffin, then it will be explained. This isn’t Kasdan and Abrams first time around the block. They know how to build a plot. I don’t agree that every little detail needs to be spelled out in the first shot. If there is a good reason for the saber to be floating in space and a good reason for everyone to be converging on it at this moment, it’s a good hook to leave that mystery hanging to be explained further into the movie. We don’t get full explanation for the reasoning behind the opening battle in ANH for a solid 30-40 minutes, and we don’t know the severity of that need until Alderan blows over an hour in. We just know that for some reason, everyone wants to find these mysterious plans. Over reliance on exposition will only bog down the movie. You have to have faith in the audience to bear with you so that things can be explained organically throughout the film.

I concur with that view. I'll go one more to say that for certain things, they can rely more on context from the prior films than a direct explanation. I mean, I feel it should be almost an expectation for someone to have seen at least the OT before going to see this film, in order to get many things. I foresee several explanations over the course of the film, but more in the sense of short discussions or references to past events we've already seen, and so forth.

I'm pretty sure I could jump right into the film and be satisfied with understanding everything from the Act I only at the very end of the film.

There haven't been "Flash backs" in Star Wars up to this point, I don't think there will be in future installments.

The opening scene features somebody searching for something. You've seen the character in the trailer. I do believe Anakin's lightsabre will appear, but a few minuters later.

I know a lot of people love the Jedi Academy series, but I started it when I was 18 or 19 and found the writing to be just awful. Maybe it was because I was starting to get into Hunter S. Thompson, Harlan Ellison and Kerouac at that point in my life, and was also beginning to read Sagan and Hawking's more user-friendly works...
I know. Total snob! I put down Kevin J. Anderson and picked up Frank Herbert. Which is a little ironic considering Anderson collaborated with Herbert's son on the new Arrakis books.

I have doubts about any site that supports the "floating hand" rumor, to be blunt.

But in addition to that, this rumor kind of flies in the face of the concept art that showed John Boyega and Daisy Ridley getting a good look at the lightsaber for the first time - a scene in which Oscar Isaac's character is notably absent. Now, I'm not doubting that the whole pig-dragging sequence will be in the film, but it won't be until after the lightsaber's unveiling, not before.

Plus, it looked like John Boyega was clear of Imperials in the trailer, and was just trying to get ahold of himself. Not like he was about to be arrested.

Don't forget that piece of concept art was REALLY early on, Boyega is a white guy in it meaning that Arndt was still the writer.

I think MSW's crystal wielding aliens are also from the Arndt draft myself

This whole concept of guys watching/witnesing every event in the past (what a XXXXXXXX coincidence, man!) :) is immensely stupid. Imagine a bunch of guys (let´s call them Inquisitors, for the old good medieval Earth times) and have them around for at least six movies (you don´t see them, cause they´r hiding, right?). They were watching everything everywhere - I mean in thousands of planets, stations, bigger ships....like God! Oh, wait, no, that really seems stupid. Let´s say they have this big computer which tell´s them go to that system, cause there´ll be a really worth event to witness, but hurry, it´s gonna happen next monday 8am. And of course, things happens all around the Galaxy, so there has to be an important number of them. The computer is not THAT good, so they can´t expect that every single event interesting enough to witness will drop a jedi/sith artifact, they just try and hope, that from time to time...it´s been like this since the Old Republic, in the time of the Empire, even after the Empire is dead (ling live the Alliance - this is how the canon novelization of Jedi ends) and still no one ever heard about them, they are like ninjas. But something changes, 30 years from Jedi, they will show up because, you know, now is the time! :) I love it, must be invented by a genius!
