I agree with you. As a hard core fan I always hated the "nodds to the fans" in movies....it distracts and embarass me..

 

But this whole plotline is ridiculous no matter how you look at it.
How would the collector know that lightsaber belonged to Anakin? Very few people knew he turned..the list is short, yoda, Kenobi, Organa, Palpatine originally. Luke eventually, Leia. Furthermore how would the collector know where it was lost? Or if it would even be possible to be found. Very far fetched

 

Perhaps that's what Luke has been up to over the last few decades, writing his father's memoires. He was a farmboy after all, so it's no wonder he'd struggle with writing a biography. He finished just last year, revealing to the galaxy who is father was and what he did in his lifetime, and now the collector is out searching for every collectible he can get his hands on, like a proper rock 'n' roll fanboy

What if it isn't Luke's old light saber, but his green one? That would explain the robotic hand clutching it, and the urgency to go find where he is when Han sees it. I seriously doubt they would bring back his old blue one.. It would be as unlikely as bringing back Boba Fett for the sake of it.. Just implausible.

 

As must as JJ loves Star Trek.... do you really think he's going to open the movie with the same gimmick as Star Trek Generations?

Also not really a coincidence if it's, say, the set-up of the movie.
