JJ and KK were pushing for May 2016, not 2015. They initially wanted more time to finish but Iger said no. That's why this story seems so implausible to me.

Even if it is true, I doubt it happens. Disney picked December fro a reason. Mid-December movies have a better chance to make more money. You get the initial opening weekend. Christmas bump. and then 2 months of nothing to compete against. IF you get a huge hit that people want to see more than once, December is where you crack the top spot on the all time box office list. If they release in August there is more competition and less time for repeat viewers before the Fall movie season begins. I'd wager if Titanic or Avatar had released in August, they wouldn't be on top of the BO list.

It's a shame that this most certainly isn't going to happen. It would be one of those summers to remember movie-wise.

I posted this rumor here last December. Tree in a forest... An acquaintance of mine who happens to work at Lucasfilm said it was almost common knowledge in certain divisions that both Abrams and Kennedy were leaning hard on Iger to push the release date to June or July. My friend even thought they had heard the teaser would shock everyone with a summer release date instead of December (there might be a version of this trailer hidden somewhere on a LF server is all I'm saying). Post-production crews were asked to PREPARE to step up their schedules to accommodate a compressed timeline. This person thought it was because they were going to begin work on Edwards' standalone flick, but accept it could be to push the release of Ep VII. This was NOT a big secret in certain camps there, although they were asked (how forcefully, I know not) to NOT spread the rumor. They were however free to express displeasure with leakers.

    Who, me? Never.
Buffy(to random vamp she's fighting):You know very well, you eat this late... (stakes him)... you're gonna get heartburn. Get it? Heartburn? (He turns to dust) That's it? That's all I get? One lame-ass vamp with no appreciation for my painstakingly thought out puns. I don't think the forces of darkness are even trying.

    Ok let's forget production reasons

    1. This summer is JAM-PACKED with tentpoles if TFA moves 2 or 3 others will have to move it would be chaos trying to rearrange the schedule so nothing eats each other

    2. If jj thought he had any chance in hell of moving tfa to this summer why would he move mi5 there ( he's producing it with bad robot)

The closer release for Star Wars is better for the fans. I don't think it has a problem going against other movies at the box office

Three years was the standard for the first six movies. Disney is working on ways to make these new films in two years. I'm pretty sure they can do that easily, given that the work seems to be more evenly-divided this time around rather than depending primarily on George Lucas. It's what they've already done with the MCU, and I think all of those movies were more expensive to make than any Star Wars movie up until The Force Awakens, which is apparently sitting on a $200,000,000 budget. Bear in mind, that's nearly twice the amount of money it took to make any of the Prequels.

Also, poop, I accidentally merged The_Coon's post with PublicEnemy's post. This is why you need to get avatars, guys!

Well it speaks very well for JJ's efficiency and ability to conclude a task in record time if he has made a complete Star Wars film in a year and a half!

Dare we even hope for May the 4th? ;)

More likely, we're looking at May the Cranberry Sauce and Giblet Dressing Be With You, if you catch my drift. ;) But a Thanksgiving release would move the release up by a month and also move up the release of trailers, posters and other tidbits.

In Czech Republic and Slovakia openings are in thursdays, which is December 17. And if you have the midnight screening, you go to the movies wednesday evening and it starts the first minute after midnight...as far as I remember no movie ever started friday.....so it will be the same with the new star wars movie...

I wish but it's not happening. There are a lot of wheels in motion, moving at a frantic pace to get the film, marketing, and merchandise done for the December window. A release this huge doesn't turn on a dime just because the director is afraid of production leaks, which was a joke on Abrams part I'm sure.
