It makes a lot of sense if this was JJ making the last Jedi. In TFA it shows you Finn every times he touch and used the light sabeir he gets better with it, when he lost to the trooper then after fight Kylo Ren it does show he get better using it, first losing to someone lower than Kylo Ren, a troop then when he fight Kylo Ren he lose but he holds off on Kylo Ren and even hits him in the arm. I believe JJ was trying to show you that Finn is a special character who might even be force senstive if Disney wants to take him there. Issues is JJ did not do TLJ.

Looking at the scene makes sense in the TFA. In the last Jedi even they down plays Finn arch so Reylo can happen, but when Finn fights with the melee weapon his only real fighting scene with hand to hand combat the first trooper he takes out with one blow to the head or neck, then he fights Phasma and wins showing you he is getting stronger and better fighter. But they downplay his character so Rey can shine, because this movie about her and not Finn and TLJ proves this point only the blind and racist and feminist do not want to acknowledge this.

Love Finn (tied for my Favorite character with good ol' Kenobi), but taking a break from viewing this thread for a bit. Peace!

Then you understand racism of the everyday variety...is not formed from backroom conspiracies ( though that does exist in this nation's history...COINTELPRO for example) but from care or lack of care or in this case indifference about the perceptions or feelings of those who are involved. This is not a political forum so I am not going into a lengthy explanation of modern racism ( nor am I saying Finns character is a victim of racism) I just felt the need to point out that your example of the ridiculous nature of perceived racism is ridiculous because those exposed to said racism on any level very well understand that it generally is a subtle thing and nothing so overt. POC of color don't need to see nooses or tiki torches to be sure something is racist.

I think the prevailing curiosity is that
Finn while not originally conceived as black but originally conceived as a main charcter ( one of the big 3 a loose equivalent of one of the Han, Leia, Luke trio...or in the prequels Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme) has had less of an arch (though I admit Padme was handcuffed by pregnancy in ROTS and should've had more to do) and played more as incompetent and a comic device than any of his main character predecessors. If he had been cast as white I would've still found this peculiar and uncomfortable, but black people have a troubling and complicated history with depictions in cinema and all media that causes us to take certain types of depictions personally ( janitor, being the butt of numerous jokes, appearing incompetent, being less important than white counterparts are all triggers and reopen old wounds...) even if unintentionally done by said creative team...which I think is the case here. And if this was ALWAYS Finns arc ( though we know it was not since this trilogy and his character in particular were all conceived somewhat on the fly) Is the creative team so tone deaf to how this depiction of a character that while was not originally necessarily supposed to be played by a black man is now in fact being played by a black man being shown with these traits may be perceived by the POC
(and not just us others have seen it too) who are fans of the franchise as less than favorable at least and insulting and hurtful at most? ( Btw I think the answer is yes they've missed the boat on this but Star Wars is too popular for them to have to take notice)

Btw Lando and Mace were both awesome characters who were not main characters ( i.e. part of the big 3 as explained above) and both had better moments and treated with more seriousness than Finn a true main character has so far in this trilogy.

This "it will never be enough" refrain is silly. I think there is a small subsection of people who are just mad he's not a jedi and will be mad no matter what they do with Finn but I think that is the smallest of minorities. Most people such as myself think Finn is easy fixable ( one reason is because they have still left him mostly as a blank slate...he's a brave guy but what else?) Despite some small qualms I loved Finn in TFA, but they advanced him nada in TLJ. They can fix Finn by simply doing something to advance his character, let him win some fights on his own, make him less of a joke ( or at least in on the jokes) make him important to the story again ( he wasn't in TLJ...a lot of people have said his storyline was filler) BAM I'm good. Go Finn, Go sequel trilogy.

Seriously? In his first battle he made a choice, he wasn't going to slaughter the villagers. Despite all of the attempted brain washing and being taken at a young age, it didn't prevent Finn from having a conscience. He recognized the evil. He rejected the evil.

You say why can't he be a serious character? He has been. He is. A serious character can be light-hearted. They can make fun of their past as a sanitation worker for the First Order, they can be shocked when they see a giant space horse when they've never been allowed to see the galaxy, they can think Happabore water is nasty. A well rounded character has multiple layers. Serious. Funny. Smart. Heroic. You know who was also funny and serious? Han Solo.

Finn's arc has progressed from him being all about protecting Rey, to being all-in about the cause of freedom and fighting tyranny for the Resistance. I really hope people will watch TFA and TLJ a few more times and pay attention to Finn. He's setup as a great character. If you think he's been made fun of or is a joke, maybe you are projecting your own insecurities because I just see a loyal hero now.

Why can't people understand that in order to give Luke's role any meaning, he needed screen time. The Rey and Ren plot is ESSENTIAL to this trilogy. There are so many characters that need screen time. Finn got a little less spotlight this time. It was enevitable based on needing to tell Luke's story which helps move along Rey and Ren's story. The Luke/Rey/Ren characters are all connected and needed to be. People wanted more for Finn. I get it. But we can't have it all in one movie. It's just not possible.

Now can I post about how JJ and Rian Johnson are anti R2-D2. They are Astromech-ists. Poor R2 was in low power mode all of TFA, then he gets TWO scenes that added up to about a minute of screen time!!!! (artoo)

It's the same shirt he wore earlier in the film coupled with the First Order pants that he had. Not some getup for forced labor. Nothing is inherently racist about that.

You also missed the entire point about him beating the people who enslaved him, and particularly the scene where he stares down Phasma and there's fear in her eyes. He's free of his chains and he's fighting for the Resistance because he wants to, not because he's required to.

I always thought finn should be the most awkward character in the cast. His humor should play out in similar ways that drax's humor plays out. Finn has no idea what its like to be a well adjusted individual. Courage is something he should've learned as in, learning the difference between courage and having no value for his own life. He was trained to fight and die in the name of the FO. Rey, a person who should've been hyper focused on surviving, should've been the one to connect with finn and get him to take value in his own life.

Its a light colored shirt and dark pants. No one tell Han he dressed that way in ESB and ROTJ. Don't let Poe take his jacket off.

I am a father believe it I did not take my kids to see the last jedi, so they can see on big screen black guy always running from things, chasing a white woman who heart for someone else, or to see black man on screen tasser by an Asian woman, and police, and men can not lead and women are wiser than men. I sure not paying to see this garbage on screen.

If FS was never going to be on the table, I wished they had never done the bait and switch, and that Boyega's character was more withdrawn and stoic. I wish that he had been an actual soldier, a hardened veteran, who had already killed combatants in the name of the FO. But when it came time to kill unarmed civilians, that THEN he has the realization that there's something wrong, and he doesn't follow orders. I would have preferred to see a soldier who had bought into the rhetoric of the FO and believed them to be the good guys (and subsequently had rationalized his being forced into their service) only to have that seminal moment where the command is given to kill unarmed combatants and having a crisis of faith (instead of the panic attack that Finn had). Where when he is commanded to shoot, he knows he supposed to, but he doesn't and he struggles some to understand his unconscious decision. Why didn't he shoot? And once he comes to the realization it's because he knows it's wrong, and knows that the FO isn't right, and that he can't stay a part of them. Then he escapes; not panicky and disheveled, but organized but resolved.

I heard originally he was supposed to be less comedic but they claimed the chemistry didn't work between Finn and Rey LOL... imagine that. They were worried about the Chemistry that they would do their very best to minimize and redirect in the next movie. A Finn that was developed skill wise, but completely taken apart psychologically would have been 1000x better than the Finn portrayed in TFA. He could have still wanted to get away from the FO and been combat competent, he still could have built an affinity for Rey and demonstrated a new emerging moral compass, when he goes to save her. He should have shown combat proficiency against the other Storm Troopers, and he still could have challenged Kylo in order to save Rey (a battle in which Finn would probably still lose, but show actual skill)

That wouldn't require any FS and he still would have been great. But what we got in TFA was much lesser. And the sad part is that, he was infinitely more relevant and had more agency in TFA (a movie where he had surprisingly few moments of gravitas) than he had in TLJ. In TLJ he was a parked car. He didn't advance in any meaningful way that required that development to be artificially stretched across a 2.5 hour movie. His screen time is literally wasted in TLJ. I honestly cannot fathom what it is that people claim to like about his arc. They describe the arc, but never say what was actually compelling about it. He decided to join the Resistance... ok... and? We waited 2 years, and spent 2.5 hours, to turn the ignition on and put the car in drive, but not actually go anywhere? That's supposed to be great?

Oh well. I won't even say, there's always Episode 9, because at this point we've been burned multiple times. There's no reason to believe in better.

So do you teach your kids that running in a symbol of racism? Do you make them walk all the time and never wear white shirts with black pants?

In case you missed it, none of the characters had a ton of grown. They learned some lessons, but evolution was minimal considering the timeline since the beginning of TFA and the end of TLJ was maybe 2 weeks max. I get you don’t like that decision but it was a creative one based on the story they are telling.

Would I have liked Force Sensative Finn? Sure. The more the better. But I also understand why in the last two films that wasn’t really possible. I’ve said it before, if they can show he’s FS sometime in IX and end the film with Finn and Rey training together. I would totally dig it. If not and he’s just a war hero of the Resistance, I can dig that too.

The fact that you have that picture shows just how badly you are looking for racism in everything you do. When you go to the store, you see racism. When you go to work, you see racism. When you watch tv, you see racism. Somehow, when you watch Star Wars, you see racism. I feel bad you are so messed up. Seriously, get some help.
