Lets change this up the old finn thread for ep7 was very deep and chaotically focused on what we saw of finn in ep7. This thread lets shift that focus forward toward what he could become in 8.
What we know so far is the story will be darker, John boyega has been training, and his role will be more physical. The question at the center of the debate about Finn going into Episode VIII is only slightly different from what it was for Episode VII. Instead of "Will Finn be a Jedi?" now its "Will he be force sensitive?"

Vote above and answer these questions found below for your choice then discuss from there.

I don't think that he'll be FS personally, but his role will be more combat-oriented (you don't train with the guys who helped MBJ bulk up for Creed otherwise). Anyway, these are good questions, so let's see here:

-I think that the FO will be the primary antagonist (perhaps led by Hux and Phasma). The more military side of the conflict.
-Poe Dameron, and BB-8. Their bromance was well-received despite limited screentime, they're in the same location as of the end of TFA, and I fully expect Poe's role to expand moving forward, so it just makes a lot of sense. I think that he and Rey will reunite, but not until a bit later on in the movie.

-Dealing with whatever permanent/lingering effects from his injuries that he might have. Having to find his place in the Rebellion, dealing with vengeful FO people, worrying/wondering about Rey, etc.
-Just to get some "fly by the seat of your pants" swashbuckling ones.

-Probably while he and Poe are on some kind of special mission for Leia, so fairly early on.
-I think that he'll have some idea of what it is already (perhaps from talking to Leia). But he wont really get the deeper stuff until if/when he talks with Luke or Rey.

-I see him growing into a leader. He has military skills, is skilled with blasters, has shown the ability to pick up on weapon's systems that he's never used before quite fast. And he's also shown a talent for coming up with plans on the fly/improvising. With time and experience, he could become a really formidable leader.
-Not sure yet, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they did.

-Absolutely. He and Rey are the co-leads after all, and I love them both.
-I think that he will. His arc in TFA was about accepting his destiny and becoming a leader. And he's friends with Resistance members. Plus he's seen the FO's brutality first hand, and has knowledge of how they operate. I see him now wanting to contribute towards bringing them down, and Leia and co wanting to utilize his skills/knowledge towards that goal (they couldn't have taken out SKB without him after all).

-There might be some in The Resistance who are reluctant to completely trust an ex-Stormtrooper at first, and the FO wanting revenge could make things more difficult at times.
-I just want him to continue to develop further, both on his own and in relation to the others. And to continue to be likeable in general.

    Anyway, good questions.

    Great Response!
This was the one that i hadn't even considered
"-Dealing with whatever permanent/lingering effects from his injuries that he might have."
You could go in thinking it will be all good and he is 100% but if rian wants to play on that a little. it could be a strong source of struggle or animosity for Finn till he gets use to the change.

I’m at work so I’m going to make this post short and quick.

FINN IS or WILL BE FORCE SENSITIVE.

    Questions That Need Answered

Who is his primary antagonist? Kylo Ren.

Who will he train with? I think Maz and Luke with show him the ways of the force. Maz will start it and Luke will finish it.

What Luke Skywalker ESB moment do you want for the character? He will try to rescue his friends.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him? I think he will play a serious role in episode 8.

When do you think he will have his Rematch? Yes, he will have a rematch.

When do you think his cybernetics will play into the story? I don’t know yet.

Where do you see the battle of Light and Dark taking him? Yes, I do think he and Rey will have a battle within. I think Finn will want payback and that might tempt him to the dark side but his love for Rey will keep him on the light side.

Where do you want to see the character display his powers? I think he would show his powers in the beginning on the movie when he wakes up out of his coma with a force vision.

Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time? Yes.

Why do you think he will or won't be a Jedi? I want him to become a Gray Jedi.

How do you think his lineage comes into play? Does it matter? Yes, His linage will come into play and it will matter.

How do you feel the darker themed story will affect him? He might be a serious character like Mace Windu with a few jokes here and there.

I'm of the opinion that Finn'll probably be FS, though that's running at around 60% probability for me.

    Who is his primary antagonist?
    Phasma

    Who will he train with?
I see Leia training him in a manner outside the traditional Jedi-teachings, so his use of the Force won't be as flashy.

What Luke Skywalker ESB moment do you want for the character
I want Finn to come upon a dying soldier (either Resistance or First Order), and use the Force to give them comfort in their last moments of life.
Very subdued, but also very kind.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?
I think Finn should be pursued by Phasma to an almost fanatical degree. He would then have to struggle with the feeling that the people she's killed in her pursuit of him are his fault, and how its his personal responsibility to stop her.

When do you think he will have his Rematch?
I imagine that he won't meet Kylo again until IX, when he and Rey face him together.

When do you think his cybernetics will play into the story?
I'm not 100% convinced that he will have cybernetics, but I'd say that they wouldn't be that important if he did, maybe only twinging every once-in-a-while.

Where do you see the battle of Light and Dark taking him?
I see him standing firmly on the side of Light. Even though I don't envision him as a Jedi, he believes fully in the more personal side of it. He's compassionate, and merciful, and kind. This doesn't mean he won't fight, but he prefers not to.

Where do you want to see the character display his powers?
As hinted before. I think he should be much more subdued in his use of the Force, minimal telekinesis, no Force-assisted acrobatics. I want him to just be connected to the vast web of life in the galaxy... which sounds a bit more Avatar-y than I think it would actually turn out.

Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time?
Because he's our secondary protagonist (analogous to Obi-Wan in the prequels), and his story of growth in the Force stands as a counterpoint to Rey's journey to become a Jedi, and Kylo's journey to (presumably) become Sith.

Why do you think he will or won't be a Jedi?
I think that he cares too much about people to follow the rules of the Jedi (even acknowledging that Luke may have changed the rules a lot, Finn wants to just be able to help people his own way). As well, from a storytelling perspective, it helps to differentiate Rey and Finn's journeys.

How do you think his lineage comes into play? Does it matter?
I don't think that it matters. Especially with the heavy implication that Rey's family will be important, I think that Finn's journey is about defining who he, personally, is.

How do you feel the darker themed story will affect him?
I think that he will be a beacon in the darkness. He will be the light that tries to hold out against the Dark. I think though that it will be hard on him, he will feel worn down by the challenge, but he refuses to back down in the face of it. He's had enough of running.

I'm not tied to any of these ideas, but if I was in charge, that'd be my first pitch (though, thankfully I'm not).

It would be cool if Finn was force sensitive. But he's a former storm trooper with special training of all kinds of melee weapons which includes a possible VIBROBLADE? Which would be cool too see in a star wars movie!

I'm of the opinion that Finn is most likely FS.

Who is his primary antagonist? His primary antagonist is Kylo Ren. Finn and Kylo are pretty much diametrically opposed. One from the light who was pulled towards the dark, the other has origins in the dark and pulled to the light. Their duel was in my opinion a better fight despite being shorter and him losing. Finally, there is real hate in Kylo's eyes for Finn. With Rey there was more curiosity and a desire to bring her to the darkside. Finn on the other hand was someone Kylo wanted dead.

Who will he train with? Maz primarily, then maybe Luke. I would love to see Leia active as well but I'm not counting on that to happen.

What Luke Skywalker ESB moment do you want for the character: Like his premonition on Takadona, Finn will sense future pain and suffering in his friends and cut short his instruction to confront those responsible.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?

I picture him facing an even more skilled Kylo Ren in a duel that will be more brutal than their last meeting. Both may end up losing a limb in the encounter.

When do you think his cybernetics will play into the story?
I don't picture Rian utilizing cybernetics. The wound to his back doesn't prove spinal damage.

Where do you see the battle of Light and Dark taking him?
Finn has made his decision to fight for the light. I don't see him flip-flopping back and forth. If another character is tempted by the dark, perhaps he is instrumental in bringing that character back from the brink.

Where do you want to see the character display his powers?
I see him being more pragmatic and equally comfortable with saber and blaster. I think he'll have a higher degree of empathy which allows for premonitions and general sensing among the other force powers.

Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time?
I see him getting as much screen time as Rey because he is the male lead whose story is far from told. There a lot of questions about his past, and what he will be capable of in the future. Unlike Rey and Poe, who have established skills, Finn (being a lead) has a lot of question marks. If he weren't the male lead, I would be more comfortable with him as established in TFA.

Why do you think he will or won't be a Jedi?
They've hinted in a lot of different ways in TFA. Two duels with the saber, picking up Luke's old remote, his premonition of the Hosinan massacre. Finn is a character who has yet to discover he's FS, after doing so, being the warrior that he is and based on his defeat in the forest, and based on John's physical preparation for this episode I think Finn will be motivated to follow the path.

How do you think his lineage comes into play? Does it matter?
It could. John said that he does have a past and hinted that his parents could be people of note.

How do you feel the darker themed story will affect him?

I think Finn will grow quite a bit in this movie. He'll find his footing and he'll be much more confident. I think the stakes however are constantly rising and he will suffer in ways that will cause even more growth for episode 9.

Good opening post. I wasn't sure how this thread should be distinguished from the TFA forum Finn topic but I like how you've laid out the direction for discussion. Also I think a good line of discussion could be how Finn's personality might change from TFA for Ep.VIII and the rest of the trilogy. Obviously he is the designated comic relief character, like Han in the OT, but will he be a bit more of a "deadpan starker" for the rest of the ST or will he maintain the "butt monkey" type of humour? How will he react to being separated from Rey? Especially as he knows where she's gone, how are they going to stop him from following her?

Anyway, I would like Finn to be a FS and eventually become a Jedi but I'm still going to answer both lists as I feel it is more likely they will make Finn non-FS if only to emulate the OT more and create the black Han Solo that, for some strange reason, people want. Also I'm going to distinguish between what I want and what I expect they will do, where appropriate.

    Non-FS Finn

    Who is his primary antagonist?
Expect: Phasma, unfortunately this scrub seems to be the antagonist that most people expect for Finn probably for the parallels with Han and Boba Fett. Phasma is a bit character and nothing will make her cool to me so making her Finn's antagonist tells me all I need to know about what they plan for Finn.

Want: This is a tricky one for non-FS Finn, maybe a KoR? He could outfight and outwit them through clever tactics and tricks etc. Kylo would be nice but I'm not sure he would be Finn's antagonist even if he were FS.

Who will be his primary companion?
I don't know. Either one of the new female characters that are being introduced or they'll have him buddy up with Poe. Whether that means making Poe more important to make him Finn's equal or just make him Finn's sidekick.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?
I think the fact that he's caught up in a war that he rather wouldn't be caught up in would be pretty depressing for him. He ran away from the FO because they were evil, obviously, but also because he didn't want to fight anymore so I imagine that waking up to find him merely fighting for the other side won't please him. Perhaps Rey leaving him behind might slightly embitter him?

What Han Solo ESB moment do you want for the character?
None that I can think of really. Stuffing Rey's unconscious body into the insides of some dead animal? lol

When do you believe he will understand what the force is?
If he is non-FS that he won't ever understand what the force is really, nor will it be necessary for him to do so.

Where do you see his adventure taking him?
Expect: Probably doing side missions with Poe and being chased by Phasma for some trumped up reason, maybe need to be rescued at the end by Rey or used as bait to get Rey.

Where do you think his cybernetics will play into the story?
I'm not sure that he will have cybernetics.

Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time?
At the moment it's the fact that his background is different from the norm and consequently we don't really know where they're going with Finn. The fact that he's not a desert dwelling, potential, Skywalker or an evil, kinda, Skywalker is more than enough reason. In other words, potential

Why do you think he will or won't command troops in the republic?
If the NR is still going, which I fervently hope, then it would make sense for Finn to command Republic soldiers due to his training and limited experience, despite some of his more feckless moments in TFA. Maybe not a high rank but certainly some position of authority befitting his abilities. Although I don't rule out him being placed under some rough veteran leader who he could have a vitriolic relationship with.

How do you think his former life will effect others around him?
Some will doubt him and probably outright hate him but I doubt much screen time will be given to this outside of him earning his detractor's admiration through his actions.

How do you want to see the character handled going forward?
Expect: He'll probably be enjoying a series of buddy cop adventures with Poe while running away from Phasma.

    Want:
I would like his character to be a bit more jaded, not depressive or angsty or anything like that, but more world weary and less open to trusting others. This could be a result of how he is treated by other Republic soldiers or how he ended TFA. Taking on the KoR and Kylo with nothing but his wits and skills would be pretty cool but unlikely I think.

    FS Finn

    Who is his primary antagonist?
Probably a KoR, the second in command, if there is such a rank. On the off chance his primary antagonist will be Kylo, they did have a lot of significant rivalry establishing moments in TFA but that might be a symptom of the "red herring" syndrome.

    Who will he train with?
I'm not sure he will receive training early on, perhaps some guidance from Maz, but Luke will take him under his wing later on.

What Luke Skywalker ESB moment do you want for the character?
I can't think of a good Luke ESB scene that would fit him, considering how different there position in the story is right now. Perhaps a lightsaber duel similar to Bespin in terms of how dark and tense it is.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?
Pretty much the same as what I outlined above with the addition of troubling force visions of events to come, probably involving Rey, and the effect they would have on him. He could also have more interactions with a KoR, his potential rival, and the losses his squad/team will suffer during these confrontations will haunt him.

When do you think he will have his Rematch?
I don't think he will have his rematch with Kylo in Ep.VIII. If he does then it will be an interrupted fight, hopefully with Finn still on his feet and not flat on his back again.

Where do you see the battle of Light and Dark taking him?
I see Finn firmly on the light side of the fight, a paragon of the light side if you will. He already decided to break away from the FO despite life long indoctrination because he didn't think what they were doing was right, so I don't see Finn tempted by the dark side much at all. If Rey succumbs to the dark side then I see Finn bringing her back from the edge in Ep.IX, perhaps with his death if they wanted to make it more tragic.

Where do you want to see the character display his powers?
In Ep.VIII I would like to see gradual use of the force in subtle ways: some visions; a little pre-cognition along the lines of sensing ambushes and an approaching KoR; some enhanced reflexes when fighting a KoR or Kylo and then some more obvious powers like a little telekinesis towards the end of Ep.VIII to make it clear. Ep.IX is where his powers will be more developed, perhaps under Luke's guidance.

Why do you think he will or won't be a Jedi?
I think that he will be a Jedi simply because TFA seems to be setting up the ST as the story of the rise of a new generation of Jedi, the founding of the NJO. Following Finn learning to be a Jedi, not in an identical "chosen one" route to Rey, and eventually becoming one of the first new Jedi Masters of the NJO would be a great way to establish the NJO.

How do you think his lineage comes into play? Does it matter?
No, I don't think his lineage will matter. The great thing about Finn is that he is no one trying to become some one and that he owes nothing to his background/lineage: he's a self-made man. Force users don't have to be from established lineages and I think people forget that.

How do you feel the darker themed story will effect him?
Same as what I wrote for the Non-FS really except that he might play a greater role in redeeming Rey if she falls and his experience with the FS won't be as welcoming as Rey's, he'll probably be more reluctant to use it.

Yeah it's so hard to understand why someone would want that? Real puzzle there?

We don't have sarcasm tags, but it doesn't matter - it reads loud and clear. :D

This is a very good, well thought out thread thread. I will have to give it as much attention as OP did because it clearly deserves it. Probably tomorrow after a good night sleep. Just wanted to say - well done.

You're right, I have no idea why someone would want the same character but with a different ethnicity.

I couldn’t wait by tomorrow, this is too interesting. :)

I personally don’t think Finn will be Force sensitive, though I wouldn’t mind if that happened. This is just my opinion right now. I am just afraid that people would build him up in their minds like they did for TFA and again completely disregard the importance of his character. Anyway, great questions and here are my answers.

    Who is his primary antagonist?

I think First Order will be. Individually, possibly Phasma because of what they did to her and Hux because it was his father who created FO stormtrooper program. If other KOR members aren’t Force sensitive, they could be an option too. His connections with FO would be valued by the Resistance and he might offer them more inside information. In fact, I expect him to take the initiative and put his planning skills to use. Resistance is under-equipped compared to the First Order and what was left of the New Republic could hardly help them. I can see him planning raids on other FO installations.

Who will be his primary companion?

Of the characters we know – Poe and BB-8. They hit it off in the first movie and their chemistry was off the charts. Their skills are compatible. I think they would make a great team. There could be other characters we have yet to meet.

What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?

Questioning his past and origins as well as his future. I agree with Rey24B that not all members of Resistance will be happy to work with him. Since he escaped FO he experienced only acceptance (by Poe, Rey, Han, Chewie, even Leia). It would be interesting to see how he deals with animosity. Not to mention that some members of the FO could have personal vendetta against him (Phasma, Hux).

What Han Solo ESB moment do you want for the character?

I don’t know, I want him to be his own character. He has every possibility to be. He is already unique - being the first stormtrooper we see on screen who defects from the evil side. The similarities with Han that already exist (and which Han recognized) are sufficient.

When do think he will encounter the last of his unit?

This could be another darker moment for Finn. I can see him wanting to explain and maybe persuade the other stormtrooper to join him. That might not go too well and Finn would have to kill him. As the next episode is described as “darker”, I expect it will happen then.

When do you believe he will understand what the force is?

When he meets Rey again or when he meets Luke for the first time. But, if Maz reappears in Episode VIII as we think she will, she could teach him what the Force is as well. I could see him wanting to know because of his connection to Rey.

Where do you see his adventure taking him?

I see him in a leadership role – on the field. Leia and her admirals would have to think about bigger stuff, Finn would be a perfect operative when he completely recovers. As I said, I can see him leading the raids against FO. He knows FO protocols and behavior, he has combat skills, he is charming – he might even go undercover. Can you imagine if he was asked to go back to FO in some capacity?

Where do you think his cybernetics will play into the story?

I am not sure he will have cybernetics. Depa Billaba was nearly dead but has fully recovered after six months in bacta tank. We also don’t know how long after TFA Episode VIII will be set. He might be fully recovered. If he does have cybernetics, I am sure he will be fully in control of them. Some mad genius could install him with some sweet toys – we know SW galaxy is full of them. :D

Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time?

Absolutely. Boyega is a co-lead of the franchise and he did a marvelous job in TFA. I completely expect him to have at least that much time in VIII.

Why do you think he will or won't command troops in the republic?

He will command troops in the Resistance for sure, though maybe not in Episode VIII. We will first have to see the state of Republic to know if that applies to the Republic as well. Why? He is a leader. He was leader even within FO and his personal philosophy and care for people fit naturally in the Resistance.

How do you think his former life will affect others around him?

It has to, it’s part of his character. How? I am not sure. He could be a great help to the Resistance, but also a great danger in some situations. We will see.

How do you want to see the character handled going forward?

He has to continue to grow. His actions in TFA have to have consequences, both good and bad. I loved how likable and charming he was and I hope they continue with that. Give him other relationships besides Poe and Rey. In general, I want all three of them to grow individually and together to truly become the new Big Three.

I am a little confused about why so many people want Finn to continue to be a non-FS when the series at its core has never been about the mundane people. Ultimately the heart of Star Wars is about the Jedi and the Sith. Now if the writers can make a non FS Finn as important to the main plot as Rey, then I'll be fine. I just don't see how it's possible to compete with a guy who can move things with his mind and see the future.

I think that a lot of people think it would take away from Rey for some reason, although they won't admit it. I personally like the idea of grey Jedi for Finn as I think it fits his personality more than the rigid traditional Jedi structure and he just got out of a rigid structure in the First Order. Also if they went that route we get a Jedi Finn and it's still different from Rey's Jedi journey and its something different than we've seen in the movies so everybody wins at the end of the day. The reason I want a Jedi Finn is because without it people seem to want to just pair him up with Poe in a subplot while Rey and Luke get the lion's share of screen time for the main plot. Which is kind of crazy because Finn is the co-lead and Luke is a supporting character in this trilogy.

So many cool ideas to respond to, I will have to get to everyone in the morning but for now. here is an Idea - If you are a FS fan and don't know how non -FS Finn would work with the story what if the jedi side of the story is not the focus. What if the war fighting in the trenches and massive spaces battles is the focus. Killing palpatine didn't stop the empire so maybe it will take something more conventional to stop the first order.

FINN IS NOT or WILL NOT BE FORCE SENSITIVE

    Questions That Need Answered

    • Who is his primary antagonist?
    • Phasma and probably a paid bounty hunter for King Prana.

    • Who will be his primary companion?
    • Definitely Poe Dameron and perhaps Snap Wexley

    • What kind of darker themed story can you imagine for him?
    • I believe he will be in great danger as he is coerced and cornered by
    • deceit and trickery manipulated by HUX, Phasma and a probably yet to be determined First Order dark asset.

    • What Han Solo ESB moment do you want for the character
    • Personal sacrifice for his friends and the Resistance.

    • When do think he will encounter the last of his unit?
    • I don't think he will.

    • When do you believe he will understand what the force is?
    • When he meets Luke and astonishingly sees Rey use it to save him.

    • Where do you see his adventure taking him?
    • A major leader of the resistance

    • Where do you think his cybernetics will play into the story ?
    • It might be a small part which will not hinder his overall aesthetics

    • Why do you feel the character is worth 40% of the screen time?
    • Truth be told, the demographics Disney is aiming at, and within the story, for his charisma and slight comedic support.
    • Why do you think he will or won't command troops in the republic?
    • I think he will command troops, probably set-up within VIII so that it happens for IX.

    • How do you think his former life will effect others around him?
    • Trust. He will have to earn it with some.

    • How do you want to see the character handled going forward.
    • An important piece of the Resistance puzzle as he knows the inner workings of the First Order.

I voted that he dies. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I don't actually believe that.

I think most of us can agree that there will be more FS characters popping up in the future. In the OT, there was a missed opportunity to explore Leia's abilities which were hinted at in Ep. V.

Like Leia, I believe that Finn is the 2nd reveal for the saga, but a reveal which they plan to flesh out. They've hinted at it in several ways already:
    1. Dueling (not just handling/using) with the lightsaber twice
    2. Handling Luke's old remote (where Luke's first active use of the Force takes place).
    3. Sensing the deaths in the Hosnian system (a nod to Obi-Wan)... and there are more.
Watching the Hosnian scene several times carefully you see:
    1. Finn loading equipment on to the spacecraft with an alien above him on the ramp, and one below him.
    2. Finn alone hearing murmuring as if people are both puzzled and concerned before outright screaming. The two on either side of him do not hear what Finn hears.
    3. The people of the Hosnian system murmur as if they are puzzled/concerned before the begin screaming in the same way for the same duration Finn hears.
    4. Han Solo and pirates from the bar run out of the cantina looking up. Did they hear screaming Takodana? Over the music and other noise from the bar??? Screaming loud enough for them to hear, but not the aliens right next to Finn??
John is the male lead and he and Daisy are inseparable in publicizing for all sorts of media. They also have (by design) incredible chemistry. Finn and Rey are both orphans with an incredible bond.

I think having both leads discover they are FS at the same time could have been messy and added minutes to an already long movie.
