At which point he yells across the universe, "FIGHT ME!"

To which Kylo Ren responds, "HAVE YOU NO HONOR?"

And they both instantly turn into Revan

Luke is buried in sand. He opens his eyes and glances nervously at Rey.
    "I see dead people"
"Dead people? Really? How often do you see them?"
    "All the time"
At the end of episode 8 it is revealed that Kylo killed Rey in the forest. Rey is the force ghost.

Assuming this Z guy is legit, then Abrams made a movie that blends the need for a realistic 7th chapter and the practicality of putting the big 3 together at least once.

You can't introduce new characters AND properly explore their discovery of the Force/heritage/etc in one film.
If TFA began with Luke's Jedi Academy, you could show his progress rebuilding the order, but that would have been so boring and expected, it would be a big letdown.

Han is the best character to die in EpVII and Luke is the perfect character to move the story along and do exposition in EpVIII

If Zs answer turn out to be true, I'll be quite pleased with TFA.

I have always expected the "Luke is only in the last 2 minutes" leak to be too convenient. Luke might be hiding, but he's too good a strategic thinker to not leave some way to come to rescue.

Another possibility is that he is so powerful, that he won't need to be directly contacted.

I wonder if the test/use of the Starkiller weapon makes such a disturbance in the Force that he's drawn to it and inserts himself in the conflict in the woods, a payoff of a subtle setup in the first act.

I don't think his involvement will be deus ex machina at all, but it will be surprising. So much will be going on that we'll kind of forget that Luke could come in to save the day.

JJ annoys me in many ways, but I have to admit, he's usually good about giving fans what they are looking for in his films. I think he's going to have Luke be a big part of Act III

Hi there folks! There´s something I´ve been wondering for a while, the title of the movie is The force awakens right? and as far as we could see from the trailer´s and teasers, the force has been awakened wich means that somehow the force was absent in the galaxy, at some point between ROJ and TFW the force has been faded or ceased to exist, and since when the story has left us in the ROJ the only force user remained was Luke, it implies that he´s no more among us...and thats why we haven´t see him so far...because show him as a force ghost would give too much of the plot...so, what if Luke´s presence in the new trilogy will be as a force ghost as Obi Wan was in the old one? I think this would answer Luke´s absence and the name of the movie...just wondering...

Oh come on not again. We have discussed this to death before.

And by the way, there is a Official Luke Skywalker thread, post your speculation there. https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....luke-skywalker-discussion-thread.1954/page-74

Hey man, I'm just a poor Hutt living a misery life in a planet with two suns, hot as hell running my poor palace, throwing people at the sarlacc pit from time to time just to have some fun, most of the girls that I had not even liked me, even when I give then a lighter chain, but under my skin and fatness I have feelings...you don´t have to be so rude...I humbly apologize for the mistake.

This thread is dead. Too quiet.

Michael Arndt comments on Luke Skywalker and Rey's role in working on the movie in 2012:

EW - J.J. Abrams explains R2-D2's closing scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

About the spoiler: he isn't wrong. While I wanted to see more of Luke, he isn't wrong. This was a right decision for the new trilogy. Because we now care about new characters and Luke can share the screen with them without destroying their roles.

I agree... & I hated the Idea of only having 20 seconds of Luke. But it was the right choice.

In Harry Potter order of the pheonix I was a big fan of the ending battle where the death eaters were sneaking up on the kids & they fought them off but ultimately were saved by the order. I was hoping something similar would happen with the knights of Ren & Luke coming in with a few Jedi's... but this worked better... it was more... human.

I feel like Luke's role works for THIS movie. As others have said, it was needed to allow the new cast to be introduced and for the audience to row attached to them and their stories (Leia doesn't show up until the beginning of the 3rd act either btw). And also, it allows them to give Han Solo his final moment in the sun, so to speak.

But now, his presence being much larger is more appropriate.

I (no longer ;)) see how Luke's appearance was necessary at all for TFA. I now think the film stood up just fine without featuring Luke - in person. I like it as a Solo feature.
THIS would have made the perfect concluding shot to TFA IMH[hindsighted]O. A neat echo to TESB's ending and fitting epitaph for Han. What a cliffhanger it would be waiting to see Luke Skywalker in Episode 8. (Admittedly I have no idea how they could have marketed TFA without Luke without creating a lot of pain.)

Not really. We'd have no idea if Finn lived or died, and there would be no resolution to what the importance behind the MacGuffin that the entire first two-thirds of the film centered around was. There'd also be no emotional denouement.
