Any thoughts as to why Rey's name is also featured in the Aftermath book? Albeit a different spelling? There's a Rae Sloane that's an Imperial Admiral. Just seems odd for there to be a Star Wars first name used more than once (you don't really see that in GFFA) and with respect to a main character and in close proximity of stories (the book released in a week and TFA released in December). It could mean nothing but just thought it strange.

 

Rae Slone has turned into a recurring character, now in two novels and one short story that I'm aware of. But she's not a major character, and wouldn't be confused for Rey. What strikes you as odd about it? Do you think it's the same character somehow?

 

No. It's just that you don't see first names repeated in canon SW, that I can recall. Unless someone is being named after someone. As far as a "main character," I was referring to Rey, who, as the protagonist of the ST, I would think she'd have a more unique name if she has a name already used in canon (again, though, with a different spelling). I'm just wondering if Rae Sloane will have some significance to Rey's parent(s) or those that give her that name. I don't believe Rae Sloane is her mother, given the different racial backgrounds, but there might be a connection of some sort. Or it could just be a random coincidence.

 

It could be that is look of someone's presence being near, she must have said something to BB-8 that cause it to nod, her smile is definitely gone.

 

I just had a thought about Rey.

Say you accept what JJ has said about her: She could've been any race, but her last name is being hidden for a reason. How can both these things be true?

Well, what if Obi-Wan adopted an orphan while he was living on Tatooine?
What if that orphan took on the Kenobi name?
What if Obi-Wan passed something down to that orphan (either an object or information) before the orphan left home?
What if that orphan was Rey's parent and whatever that something is was passed down to Rey?

This would (A) explain how she could be a Kenobi of any race, and (B) explain why they might even choose to have a Kenobi in the ST in the first place, other than just a shallow effort to keep the last name going.

I'm using Kenobi as an example here because I still believe that THR rumor about there being a Kenobi girl must have come from somewhere.

 

Beautiful, funny, bad-ass star wars lead that can kick serious ass, if daisy shows off any more positive attributes i might just have to start disliking her

 

That would make Rey a lot older than she looks. Unless there was some carbonite involved.

Obi-Wan could have adopted her grandfather, it doesn't really matter. The point still stands: Adoption would explain why the character could have been any color but has a significant last name.

 

I wouldn't be against a Rey / Kenobi link, although it sure would be one mighty coincidence.

I wondered that, too. Very odd for them to let that happen, when they've literally killed off EU characters in the past for having similar names to film protagonists (R.I.P. Anakin Solo).

 

I think it's great she's really having fun with it, both her and John. There doesn't seem to be any competition between the two of them and their egos don't show at all, which is just great! Have Fun Kids!!!!

 

Well, based on the recent leaked Jakku footage, Rey speaks with a British accent which could fit with being a Kenobi. Or she had been living around a bunch of former imperials (who founded a community post-battle of jakku) and that's their accent?

 

Got to say, it would be a bit weird for Han and Leia to have a daughter with a British accent! But I guess that could also emphasize her isolation.

 

The very American Admiral Marcus in the last Star Trek movie had a very English daughter (herself a new version of a character that had previously been American). And of course it happens all the time in real life.

 

That's true... perhaps we've uncovered a JJ-ism!
