    Leading character, yes.....but protagonist, no.
Everything we have seen in the last weeks has shown that her story is one filled with anger, suffering, and so on. Even her toy sounded incredibly angry.
So maybe her force powers are awakened by Kylo, causing her to become a potentially powerful person who balances on good/evil.
This is even shown on the poster imho.....

Kylo and Fin seem to be far more one dimensional. And for that I think that both are somewhat disposable characters.
Kylo might just be a puppet to do Snoke's dirty work, with Rey being the real deal.

She was taught by 3PO. Over six million languages. That is why she was stuck on Jakku. It took many years.

I think BB8 is a little like R2D2 was in this respect. He knows a lot more than we think he does at the beginning of the movie. He may even know who Rey is.

So when KK specifically says she is the 'protagonist' you choose to ignore it? :p

Reads like he is talking about Finn as a leading character, not protagonist.

People are getting far too wrapped up in that word. We have a leading heroine and hero in this episode and both have been marketed as protagonists. Until we see the film we can only speculate whether one will be emphasized more than the other. They may be more Frodo/Aragorn, Luke/Han, or the degree maybe so insignificant (in this particular episode) that it depends on who you ask.

The OT were about Luke, the PT were really about Obi Wan, but the first 6 stories were about Anakin if that makes sense. Getting bogged down trying to figure this out with the next saga is fine and good... just don't loose sleep over it, because very few people know the answer right now.

Oh yeah because anyone bad comes from places that have that accent, makes perfect sense.... and also if that was true why does Obi Wan have an english accent? Your rationale doesn't make any sense. Yes I am British!

It could be for the simple reason that Daisy Ridley couldn't achieve a believable American accent if that is what JJ was after. If that is the case it shows the strength of what Daisy brought to the auditions that JJ was able to overlook that one problem in favour of her performance as a whole. Either way she doesn't need an American accent and anyone who thinks differently is a bit silly.

Rey is a tinkerer so her ability to speak with BB-8 was probably a skill she's developed/had an affinity for. Her accent could be an indicator of her origins. The question is when was she separated from her family, did she have enough time to form the accent from them or was it developed dealing with someone on Jakku?

A good chunk of my family is English so yes, I have been to many regions and know the basics of the accents there. Also I watch a lot of British shows and films, which after a while, you just pick up on the differences. But unless you're not a native English speaker, I really don't understand how you could mistake British and American accents. Seems just so basic.

Maybe they want to steer away from the usual accent distribution some are talking about. That a hero has a british accent without being an Imperial could mess things up, like a Stromtrooper with an american accent..

That's not true, of course the movie will have some leads.

But the marketing have make it absolutely and undeniable clear the Rey is the protagonist, i don't know how this is debatable.

You just compare the original posters with the new ones, and Rey is where Luke would be, how much of the distance between "THE LEAD" and the other leads will have in screen time and importance to the plot only time will tell, again that's really subjective.

But your point of both being marketed as protagonists is not true.

Why train her in RP? I can hear the difference, but I'm not sure it would be completely throw me off if she used her own accent.

That's why it will be telling to know how long she's been on Jakku. Perhaps her family is from Coruscant.

And for her to having an accent she would have to be on Coruscant or one of the Core Planets at least to 5 or 6 years old, she would lose the accents easily if she went there earlier, or also she could just be raised around people from Coruscant, hello Max Von Sydow?
