What do you mean? Most probably Luke or Leia told her about her grandfather. Maybe even Anakin's force ghost wanted to have some time with his grandchild?

Am I the only that generally dislikes the idea of Rey being related to someone.?

Why can't she just some random person that gets caught up in all this?

 

She know's by the lightsaber Luke didn't know because he couldn't sense it. He wasn't trained!

 

Most people seem (including the creators) to view star wars trilogies as the family lives of the skywalker clan. She doesn't have to be related to anyone, but I think she will turn out to be Han/Leia's kid. Also, she seems to be a better fit as a skywalker than Finn or Poe.

 

I'm not sure I like it or dislike it, I just think it's the most likely scenario.

 

No. I totally get where you're coming from. I prefer that only one of the new characters is related (Kylo or Rey) not both.

That said Star Wars is about the Skywalkers, and we know from the Vanity Fair piece that family will be an imprtant theme.

I've been saying for awhile it's a foregone conclusion Rey will be a Skywalker. The question comes down to who is her dad and what the hell is she doing on Jakku.

But if it turns out Kylo is the Skywalker and Rey is the person who gets randomly caught up i'd be fine with that too.

Whoever is related, I just hope it's smartly written and with purpose. Not just coincidental fan service.

 

If she's related and knows anything of her family's past, of course she would know about Vader. If she is just some orphan girl why would she have any aversion to any lightsaber at all? There IS a chance she was trained as a young jedi and is averse to the weapon because of an event in her past. If this is the case, then she would most likely know Luke, and a there's a good chance he's told her about Vader, even if she's not a Skywalker at all.

But we don't even know if she has an aversion to any lightsabers at all.

You're in the minority certainly. There has been a lot of concern around here that she might not be related to the Skywalker family.

It is my preference that the new trilogy continues the story of the Skywalkers. I think it's not only the obvious choice, but the smart one - especially if they are utilizing the original cast. Now, I don't want everyone to be related to characters from the previous films. That would be silly. But I think the main character ought to be of Skywalker blood.

I have no objection to them making Star Wars films about other characters, but IMO they shouldn't be part of the numbered episode series.

I apologize if I'm missing something, but I'm not sure why you think it's unreasonable for her to know who Vader is. Are you assuming she is not related to the Skywalkers, and that she has lived in that AT-AT her entire life? Because it's pretty well established that she is a Solo.

 

Where is it established she is a Solo?She might be. I hope so, but there's no evidence she is. It's unreasonable because she has lived a solitary life on Jakku.

 

She as much as said so at a recent press conference in Japan. The video is in this thread, somewhere back a ways. When asked about her character's family she says something to the effect of - my character has been living a SOLITARY life, so that should be your first clue.

But even if you ignore that, there has been nothing to suggest she has always lived on Jakku.

There's nothing to suggest she hasn't. She could have been born there, dropped off there, crashed there.

 

Right, so obviously if the guess is that her family told her about Vader, then that also includes the idea that either she hasn't always been on Jakku, or that she hasn't always been alone there.

I think this is why I'm confused about your question. Based on what you wrote it appears you have taken a firm stance on the side of she's been isolated there her whole life until you see evidence to the contrary - even though there's no evidence the other way either. Based on what we know for certain, and what seems probable, I don't see any reason to think that it's impossible for Rey to know Vader's identity. For all we know, it might be common knowledge across the galaxy by this point in the story.

 

If she's a skywalker its highly reasonable for her to know who Vader was.

As far as her being a Solo or not...i think you can make a compelling argument either way. I personally think she's gonna be a Solo. But her being a Solo raises more questions than answers. Namely why the hell is she living in an old AT-AT on Jakku by herself?

 

But who says she is living there by herself? I think she is living there with uncle Luke who is in hiding and training her.
Why would she have the falcon if she is not Han's daughter? Unless you believe they just conveniently find the falcon or steal it which is highly unlikely.
Maybe she actually borrowed it from her dad, some years ago, and I like to think at some point Han is going to complain about the current state of the falcon "not a scratch".

 

Ridley says she lives a "solitary" scavengers life. I doubt Luke lives with her.

The falcon bit is more spot on. We don't know how exactly it enters the movie, so I'm not sure she has the falcon. She might. How else does it get onto Jakku for their escape? Han saying "chewie, we're home" makes it seem like it isn't Han that swoops in out of nowhere to save her.

For all everyone knows, Vader is still alive and well. Not many people seen him die, or was invited to his funeral pyre. I'd say except for a few, such as Luke, not many know he is dead. Not many believed Hitler was dead either.
