Midichlorians are canon, but, like that weird uncle, we do not talk about them.

    Ha, is there a list?

    Weird Uncle Lars
    Midichlorians

    Virgin Birth?
    The Ewoks Cartoon?
    Life Day?
    Zett Jakasa cameos?

    Back to Daisy...

She has more of a Cockney accent than the "King's English" which is cool, because foo on the classically trained accent, although I wager she could pull it off easily if asked. Not a cartoonish Cockney accent, just the general drawl of a North Londoner. If I had ten cents to guess, I wager someone in her family either roots for the Spurs or the Gunners.

I hope she keeps the accent, because to me, it makes her closer to blue collar roots, rather than royalty, which is a nice juxtaposition against Leia, who may struggle to understand her (I am guessing). Also most Americans can't tell much of a difference, so they just may let her use whatever accent she's comfortable with.

She certainly has fantastic poise and posture and a terrific smile, she's clearly intelligent and comes from a family of actors. If you didn't read the Daily Mail article on her a few months back, it's a decent piece to get an idea of what she is like as an actress:

I've been wondering if the new actors will speak in their native accents on screen. There's certainly president for British accents in Star Wars, but it's also fairly common for English actors to use American accents in these big budget Hollywood films. I'm looking forward to hearing Ridley and Boyega speak some dialogue so I can find out.

What accent Daisy has in the movie might be telling to her parentage. If she speaks with her native British accents then she may not be related to any of our original characters as they all have American accents. However, if the accent of the inhabitants of Jakku is a British accent then it is possible that she is related to the original characters if she has been raised primarily on Jakku and has been there long enough to pick up their accent.

With the new trilogy aiming for the tradition of the OT and with fantasy movies featuring the mythical sword Excalibur, plus Rey being the pretty new protagonist I think the following will happen:

TFA: Rey, naive and innocent and perhaps weak, has a mentor figure that starts her off on her heroic journey. She meets many obstacles along the way. Is she the right person to save the galaxy from tyranny? She loses her mentor.
VIII: Rey is directed to a great warrior who knows the evil she will face and prepares her for the fight that awaits her. She is beaten.
IX: Alone, Rey sets off to use what she's been taught to vanquish the evil and bring back peace.

I knew there was a reason I liked that girl. Now I truly know the Force is with us. :)

Also if she speaks the way she normally does, I don't think there's any need to explain, Carrie's accent literally changes throughout Episode IV.

Just one thing on what the "colorblind" casting claim might mean: I believe Finn was always intended to be a new character, therefore he could have been any race. We obviously do not know much of anything, and we probably won't until years after the new trilogy ends. However, I remember when several actors, including Jesse Plemons and Michael B. Jordan, were all supposed to be up for the same role. Considering the actors in the running, supposedly, for Finn were both white and black, I think it's likely he will be a completely new character. With Rey, on the other hand, I'm not sure if there were any black, or of any other race, actors who were tested for that role. The only name I remember who was also in the running was Saorise Ronan, I think. With all that said, I think we will end up seeing Kira/Rey And Kylo Ren as siblings, each having solo and, more importantly, skywalker blood running through their veins. Could be totally wrong, but that's the way I'm leaning as of now!

    Movie sites:
    Chloe Moretz (?) (January 2013)
    Rachel Hurdwood (August 2013)
Saoirse Ronan (September 2013) (self-confirmed after initial reporting by Latino Review and Bleeding Cool)

    Fan sites:
    Ksenia Solo (September 2013)
    Taissa Farmiga (November 2013)
Lily Collins (April 2014 article alleges December 2013 audition)
Jessica Szohr (part allegedly dropped due to script rewrite)

In late October 2013 is when they geared up for the open casting call. The Vanity Fair article makes it look like November is when they took another crack at the script before finishing a first draft in mid-January 2014.

Are those the ladies up for Rey? Didn't know most of them so I looked them up on IMBD. I'd say they had a certain look in mind for the character, and JJ was just paying lip service with his SDCC comment about Rey.

Katie Jarvis (Fish Tank) was reported by Latino Review to have been cast, but it just may have been a "casting echo" from before Ridley was cast as they look similar and are of a similar age.

And I think Szohr is far outside the general age range of the other actresses.

My take on it after I watched was that he was supporting the fact that John Boyega was cast because he is a great actor, not because they had some kind of vision ahead of time about what race that character should be. This is supported by the actors who were up for the part. However, JJ couldn't just single out John Boyega alone for this kind of comment, because then it has the opposite effect from that which is intended: drawing attention to the race of the actor playing the part. So my take on it is that he threw Daisy Ridley and her part in to the discussion, in part, because she is one of the three new good-guy leads, but the only one not of "minority" descent. (As well as the fact that she was sitting right next to Boyega, so JJ saw her when he glanced over at Boyega to talk about him.)

So, I agree wholeheartedly that this was just "lip service" as you suggest, and we should not try to glean anything from it with respect to the relation, if any, of Daisy Ridley's character to the "legend players."
