In The Heart Of The Sea is underrated.

I'm interested to see what Ron does.

In the Heart of the Sea is sadly a hot mess failure in adaptation.
perhaps Howard's failure on the project was in not recognizing that it was a very bad script.
it's also a film that fails to take any risks whatsoever.
so: risk-averse, but a nicely made film.
the aesthetic was nice and the action was good.
he had a stellar cast too, which makes it all the more a shame it didn't land.

nonetheless, i have confidence in Howard as a director.
he can do good work. : D
Terrence Malick's films have scripts (ostensibly), but mostly he just tells the actors to wander around and do whatever they feel like. he usually keeps the improv stuff and then adds narrative v.o. to fill in the gaps, etc. his approach to filmmaking is very collaborative and very spontaneous.
KK and Howard are long-time friends.
also, George had wanted Howard to direct Phantom Menace a long time ago in an era far far from here.
    so there are connections.

The script wasn't strong but Ron directorially handled it extremely well.

I feel Ron Howard is a great choice and will have a unique take on a Star Wars film. As a huge Andy Griffith Show, Happy Days, and of course Star Wars fan...the jokes are endless as well:

    - Help us Opie-Wan, you're our only hope.
    - Han shot first...because Barney Fife had his bullet in his pocket.
    - Hyperdrive in the Falcon doesn't work...up strolls Fonzie, taps it with his fist, up and running again...turns to the camera, thumbs up, "aaaaayyyyyy"

Also, my friend texted me earlier when the news broke and said prepare for the Clint Howard cameo as a Sith. Clint Howard is Snoke confirmed!

^ Bonus points if Clint Howard wears a frightening alien mask over his Sith character's face.

I wonder if they'll be more inclined to have Harrison Ford appear in a prologue, epilogue, or bookend given these developments, particularly now what Howard on born, whom Ford has worked with.

My final word on this, since an adequate director has been chosen is, the next Lord & Miller film will be looked at as well as the Han Solo film. If the next L&M film is good or great critics and the general movie going audience will wonder what type of Solo film they would have gotten with L&M, and for sure in 10-20 years footage will be leaked once this is an old issue.

If the Han Solo film is meh, critics will have a field day. If the Han Solo film is great, end of story. Some people just want the Star Wars films to fail especially those that don't think we need a Solo film.

As a huge fan of Star Wars, I was skeptical that we would get another Star Wars films 5 months after TLJ, so for me it was too good to be true. Therefore, when this controversy broke, I was like, I knew it! I knew something was gonna happen! Two Star Wars films months apart! What a treat for Star Wars fans regardless of what I want (OB1 FILM).

Any who, Ron Howard directed Willow, he was in American graffiti, he has a personal relationship with GL & KK, he understands Kasdan vision for Han, and he won't walk all over the script Kasdan's son wrote with his help; Lucas considered him for the prequels, so we got a safe choice.

I would have loved to see Lucas film take a chance on new and fresh directors, but obviously they did, now if they want to make the May 2018 release date, or push it back to December 2018 this is the best way to go forward. I can't image a blockbuster director diving into this controversy, unless he or she simply wants a payday, or an opportunity to direct another film in the franchise.

Not a bad choice by any means. Ron Howard has made some great films, but it's such a safe choice. I am not a fan of a Han Solo origin story at all but was on board with Lord and Miller because I like their other work, plus they don't scream Star Wars which would've made this interesting. The Spin Offs should be the complete opposite of the episodic films, make them as crazy and fun as can be. It'll be a canon story I but in my head I'm gonna pretend its not the real story of the young Han Solo lol

From the outside looking in, it appears Lawrence Kasdan will be the director going forward. He can't be given the title officially because it's in violation of the DGA, so they bring on a known team player like Howard. They'll collaborate going forward and make sure the final cut is in line with what Kasdan originally intended.

I think what Kasdan's going to do will be more in-line with "producing" the movie. The best frame of comparison would probably be the Richard Marquand/George Lucas relationship during the production of Return of the Jedi, only much, much smoother.

Oh geez, I can't believe I overlooked Malick! One of my favorite directors. I guess Malick doesn't easily come to mind when I'm thinking about Star Wars: they occupy different parts of my brain, I think.

Anyways, Malick's a great example: he spends sometimes years in the editing room putting together a film from the massive amount of footage he shoots, I've read. But of course, this wouldn't be a good way to make a special effects heavy Star Wars film.

I can't help but idly wonder what a Malick Star Wars film would look like, though, roflmao!

Probably like a more artsy-schmartzy version of David Lynch's Return of the Jedi.

    i wouldn't mind the experiment ~ hahaha

i love Malick. yeah, of course he's probably not best for an action film, but he's one of the most interesting directors, ever, and his films are stunning.
i get that people don't much care for his style, but i love almost everything he's ever made.

I think he'd do much better if he was given a hence to create, write, and direct an obi-wan story with Sean mcgregor.

    The Missing.

This is another seriously underrated Ron Howard movie. It's award worthy.

I don't think we have too much to worry about with Solo.
