If I remember correctly the Journal of Whills was a historical chronical and the episodes themselves were items from the chronical. There was a story in the Old EU with R2 telling the Whills the stories and that is how it makes into the historical record. But the opening crawl originally was intended to have a "Taken from the Journal of the Whils" tag.

That's from the Making of ROTS book, not the EU.

Recently in the Star Wars comics Luke has found a treasure trove of Jedi stuff in the control of a Jedi fan boy Hutt a bunch of lightsabres, holocrons, statuary and the like. I think that these will play a part in some things. Perhaps the Journal of the Whills is a holocron.

Thank the space gods the droids were complete enough in their retelling to mention the 2-headed pod racer announcer and death sticks or that might of been lost to the ages forever

    ----------------------------------------------------------

so when 3po is telling the ewoks the story in RotJ are they Inceptioning it? Is he telling them the story within the droids telling the Whills story?

HOW DEEP DOES THIS SPACE SLUG HOLE GO????

If it's true that Yoda's large-eared species is decsended from the Whills. I think I may have just found another one.

    It makes PERFECT sense now.

C3PO told the Whills the first 3 chapters
3PO: "I'm not much more than an interpreter and not very good at telling stories. Well, not at making them interesting, anyway."

R2 knocked him out of the way, having had enough of such a wrenched attempt and told the Whills chapters 4 through 6

Then the newfangled BB8 told them chapters 7 through 9 (or is that 12? :p)
That's why it plays out looking so different because 3PO and R2 are from the 'classic' era and BB8 is the I-phone (I-Bot)? of her day.

In all seriousness, though, I don't think the Whills will be expounded upon in The ST. I think that it would clutter up the story of the main protagonists/antagonists.If it does indeed happen, it would probably be An Easter Egg of sorts with a literal book somewhere in Luke's house or in The New Jedi Order Temple if there is one in the present of TFA or The ST.

In the Return of the Jedi compilation archive commentary, at the time Yoda is about to disappear, Lucas mentions that he learns the secret of the Whills . When he learns the secret it lets him to retain his identity in the force after death. I will assume that Qui-gon maybe knew this as well, not sure. However, it would be cool to see this mysticism return in TFA.

Wait, do you mean he learns the secret of the whills right as he is dying? Or do you mean he learns it at some pooint during/before The PT from Qui-Gon? Because at the end of ROTS, Yoda mentions how he's been communicating with Obi-Wan's old master to elarn the ways of the force or something along those lines.

    ROTS screenplay:

    222 INT. POLIS MASSA-OBSERVATION DOME-NIGHT

On the isolated asteroid of Polis Massa, YODA meditates.

YODA: Failed to stop the Sith Lord, I have. Still much to learn, there is ...

QUI -GON: (V.O.) Patience. You will have time. I did not. When I became one with the Force I made a great discovery. With my training, you will be able to merge with the Force at will. Your physical self will fade away, but you will still retain your consciousness. You will become more powerful than any Sith.

    YODA: Eternal consciousness.

QUI-GON: (V.O.) The ability to defy oblivion can be achieved, but only for oneself. It was accomplished by a Shaman of the Whills. It is a state acquired through compassion, not greed.

YODA: . . . to become one with the Force, and influence still have . . . A power greater than all, it is.

QUI-GON: (V.O.) You will learn to let go of everything. No attachment, no thought of self. No physical self.

YODA: A great Jedi Master, you have become, Qui-Gon Jinn. Your apprentice I gratefully become.

YODA thinks about this for a minute, then BAIL ORGANA enters the room and breaks his meditation.

BAIL ORGANA: Excuse me, Master Yoda. Obi-Wan Kenobi has made contact.

I wonder why it was cut...I mean, it's still canon and all since Yoda literally stated that he has spoken to Qui-Gon Jinn, or the most likely scanrio was that it was cut for tun-time purposes.
