Padme's backstory

I agree. Although I liked these scenes. I wish they were in a movie.

 

That's not so for every deleted scene, but just as with other scenes that were deleted for running time (e.g. Obi-Wan and the Jedi Temple analysis droid), it still 99.9% happened. Obi-Wan mentions the droid, just like we see the Naberrie family.

Re: those specific scenes, I suppose my point is this: What in those deleted scenes could possibly contradict anything in the new canon? If Lucas went out of his way to bring back all five actors from the AOTC deleted scenes (including the two nieces, who you barely even see), the implication is that he considers those moments canon. At least to me! Your mileage may vary...

To get back on topic: I really wish they'd give us more Padme stories, since she's the main character we know the least about. But there's zero chance of that happening anytime soon. Heck, even the Clone Wars series overlooked her most of the time.

 

Those deleted scenes really would have explained a lot, I agree. Padme's change of heart might not have seemed so sudden. In The OT, all those meaningful looks between Han and Leia at the star of the TESB were almost comical the way they were so overdone, but you had the feeling a lot had been going on in the time between ANH and TESB. Events moved too quickly for that in ROTS. You could not chalk up the evolution of Padme's feelings to something that happened off-screen. And indeed, it HAD happened on screen, before it was cut.

I think if you asked GL if those scenes were canon, he'd say they were. Has anyone done that?

I have seen fans so upset over cut scenes from TV shows that the showrunners actually had to appease them by agreeing the scenes were canon.

Me, too. Especially after the way the character was written in ROTS. She didn't get to be Queen at 14 for no reason, that's for sure. There was a lot to her that we never got to see. The mother of heroes deserves a better story!

 

Done some deep digging into Padmé's history and background. All 100% correct and canon.

- 34 BBY (age 12) The Naberrie family moves from Deeja Peak to Theed because their prodigal daughter Padmé Naberrie has a natural gift for politics and public speaking and has joined the Legislative Youth Program to train as a politician. Padmé begins using the professional name 'Padmé Amidala' to give her family privacy from the Naboo media. In the program, Padmé meets and briefly falls in love with a boy named Palo, who has "dark curly hair and dreamy eyes" who later leaves politics to become an artist.

- 33 BBY (age 13) Padme Amidala is elected as 'Princess Of Theed', a position which translates as 'Mayor of Theed' the capital city of Naboo. Padmé has a brief relationship with a boy named Ian Lago, the son of King Veruna's Prime Councilor, Kun Lago. When Padmé is elected Queen Of Naboo, she ends the relationship with Ian Lago, which leaves him broken-hearted.

- 33 BBY (age 13) Winama Naberrie, Padmé's paternal-grandmother dies.

- 32 BBY (age 14) Naboo's King Ars Veruna is removed from office after a corruption scandal. Padme Amidala is then elected as 'Queen Amidala' for her first four-year term replacing the previous monarch.

- 32 BBY The Trade Federation blockades the Naboo System in protest of recently introduced Galactic trade route taxation fees. The Trade Federation, under control of Sith Lord Darth Sidious, later invades Naboo and seizes control of the planet. Queen Amidala escapes to Coruscant (with a detour at Tatooine for ship repairs, where she meets a gifted 9 year old slave boy named Anakin Skywalker.) to plead assistance from the Galactic Senate. No help is immediately given which leads to a frustrated Queen Amidala deciding to take direct action herself and returns to Naboo to personally deal with the Trade Federation invasion. She forms an alliance with the Gungans, a race of amphibians who live in the swamps of Naboo. This alliance ultimately defeats the Trade Federation and Naboo is freed.

- 28 BBY (age 18) Padme Amidala is re-elected as Queen for a second (and final) four-year term.

- 28 BBY (age 18) Padmé's first neice, Ryoo Naberrie, is born.

- 26 BBY (age 20) Padmé's second neice, Pooja Naberrie, is born

- 24 BBY (age 22) Padmé Amidala completes the maximum two full terms as Queen and leaves her position, despite the Naboo public calling for her to be rewarded with a life-term as Queen. Padmé is succeeded by Queen Jamillia. Padmé is then appointed by the new Queen to the position of Senator of The Chommel Sector, which the Naboo System has jurisdiction over.

- 22 BBY (age 24) Senator Padmé Amidala secretly marries Jedi Padawan Anakin Skywalker at Varykino Lake Retreat, Naboo.

- 19 BBY (age 27) Padmé is heavily pregnant with twins. She is attacked by her husband, Anakin Skywalker on the planet Mustafar and is almost killed. Anakin has turned to the Dark Side of the Force and is now known as Darth Vader. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi overpowers Anakin then flees Mustafar with Padmé to Polis Massa.

- 19 BBY (age 27) Padmé gives birth to twins named Luke and Leia on Polis Massa, then dies after childbirth. It is then decided by Jedi Master's Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi that the children are then seperated and hidden from their Sith Lord father. Leia is adopted by Padmé's friend, Senator Bail Organa , who is the husband of Alderaan's Queen Breha Organa. Leia is given the name Princess Leia Organa. Luke is taken to Tatooine by Obi-Wan Kenobi, then put into the care of Owen and Beru Lars.

- 19 BBY (age 27). Padmé's body is returned to Naboo's capital Theed for funeral. She is deliberately made to still appear heavily pregnant. Her body is cremated according to Naboo tradition and custom and her ashes are scattered into the River Solleau which flows through the capital city Theed. This also has the effect of concealing any evidence of surviving children from the Empire.

- 6 BBY - Padmé's younger neice, Pooja Naberrie (age 20) follows in her aunt's footsteps and is appointed representative of Naboo's sector in the Imperial Senate by Naboo's Queen Kylantha. Pooja later befriends Senator Leia Organa of Alderaan, both not realising they are actually first-cousins.

- 1 BBY - 18 year old Princess Leia Organa is elected to the Imperial Senate as Senator of Alderaan, replacing her adopted father, Bail Organa.

- 0 BBY - 19 year old Princess Leia Organa is aboard the Empire's first Death Star while it destroys her homeworld of Alderaan.

- 3 ABY - Princess Leia Organa (age 22) and the Rebel Alliance establish a new base on the ice world, Hoth. Unfortunately, the base is discovered by an Imperial Probe Droid and the Imperial fleet then invades Hoth, resulting in a surface battle and a hasty evacuation. Leia and Captain Han Solo flee aboard the Millennium Falcon but hyperdrive trouble results in them making a detour to Cloud City, Bespin for repairs. En-route, Leia and Han Solo have their first kiss.

- 4 ABY - Princess Leia Organa (age 23) tells Luke Skywalker (age 23) on the Forest Moon of Endor that she remembers her real mother as being "very beautiful. Kind, but...sad."

I find it ironic that so many fans complain that very little of Padme's back story was seen in the PT. Yet, at the same time, many ignore the fact that very little or none of Leia and Han's back stories were seen in the OT.

This sounds like a case of what is OK for the geese (Leia and Han) is not for the gander (Padme). Isn't this a bit hypocritical?

The thing is no one knew what led to Leia and Han exchanging meaningful looks, until some twenty to thirty years after TESB was released, in a novel.
