I assumed this taking place during the OT or New Republic era but after reading some quotes, it seems like perhaps post ROS? New future is brought up

My father and both grandfathers are ex-military, so I get where she is coming from. "Patriotic touch" should benefit a movie like this, because, for example, the Rebel squad from "Squadrons" felt like a bunch of random people, rather than a true military squadron.

-That my friend who LOVES all things Rogue Squadron will love this.
-That Patty Jenkins is directing this. I adore WW and think it's significance goes far beyond the (admittedly shoddy at times) quality of the movie. Besides, we need more women and people of color both in front of and behind the camera.
-That it's seemingly taking place after the ST. We can finally move forward!

    Dislikes:
-That it seems like it'll cover the same ground the New Republic fighters do in some of the current media like the Alphabet Squadron and the occasional NR stuff we see in The Mandalorian. Frankly there was no pleasing me for this one though. I would be just as upset at another movie during or around the OT as I am at this one being after the OT, admittedly for different reasons.

    Overall:
I'm really happy about this, and am looking forward to seeing how it shapes up. But unless they really shake up the political system after the ST, I won't be fully satisfied.

This along with the Taika news really makes me wonder what the future of theatrical Star Wars is. I'm a fan of Wonder Woman and Patty is a very competent filmmaker who is absolutely able and deserving of directing a Star Wars film but I couldn't help but feel a bit "meh" on the news. I wanted a bit more. I obviously know what Rogue Squadron means to a large percentage of the fanbase, but it was slightly before my time so I don't have much attachment to it. I really thought the days of standalone films were done and we'd be getting a new series/trilogy but it doesn't look like that's going to be happening anytime soon.

Regardless it is Star Wars so I am very much intrigued.

Same here, it felt kind of weird like did we need that information? It was almost like she had to proof that she was qualified for this project. Nevertheless I'm curious to see how her own father's experience in the military inspired her to make a movie about fighter-pilots.

    Looking forward to Rogue Squadron!

She's a woman making a war movie. On top of that it's a Star Wars movie.
I have no doubt she felt obligated to inform keyboard warrior types she's qualified.
Because the Star Wars fan base is soooo rational and understanding
I mean, there's a guy who published an op-ed in the WSJ today saying Dr Jill Biden should drop the Dr from her title....calls her kiddo and tries to belittle her education because she isn't an MD.

Also I saw that it's not going to be based on anything previously associated with Rogue Squadron but a brand new thing which has me super excited.

As someone who grew up in a military family, I honestly did not get the sense of Jenkins making this "patriotic" per se. She said her dad was a fighter pilot, and how much she's longed to make a movie about being a pilot.
She even said she had never found a movie or script that felt right, because she knows (or at least, I'm hoping because I'm not up to date on her filmography) more than most other directors. She knows not only what a story about fighter pilots ought to be, she knows as an artist and the child of someone in the Air Force what it should "feel" like.

I am, as always with Disney Star Wars, cautiously optimistic about this until I see more of it, but her giving her background actually gave me more confidence in what the movie will be like. Not because I believe women are incapable of directing, but because the atmosphere and purpose of this story is something that deeply and profoundly resonates with her. Count me in for that.

    Patty Jenkins is INCREDIBLY picky.
She made MONSTER in 2003, which won Charlize Theron her Oscar. After that she didn't make another theatrical movie until Wonder Woman. In the middle of that she actually turned down Thor 2 after originally agreeing to it because it didn't meet her standards.
If she took this job, you can be damn certain it's gonna be a good story.

Wow, I had no idea she directed Monster, this makes me even more optimistic about her SW project. I've seen two of her films and liked them both :)

Groovy. I definitely want to catch up on what she's done.
And she definitely dodged a bullet with Thor 2! Haha.

If she had her story told maybe it's great

If I recall correctly, the story changed after she left as well. I think that's just part of working with Marvel: Either your visions align or they kick you out.
Based off what I've heard about her work, I wouldn't be surprised if the story she envisioned would have been much better.

The use of the word Rogue seems to imply people rebelling. So I doubt it’s post TRoS.

"Rogue Squadron" def has its roots in the rebellion, but at least in Legends, the name persisted even into the New Republic. And, I believe KK pretty much outright said that this takes place after TROS.

I actually really like the idea that Rogue Squadron remains a thing even outside of the rebellion. It has so much importance and legend to it.

I post-TROS setting would allow a much-needed creative freedom for the movie. New characters, new fighter designs, new enemies (although I hope to see TIE Daggers), ending we don't actually know from the start and, most importantly - new merchandise!

But what would they be going rogue against if TFO is defeated? I honestly wish LF would move away from the 'down with the man' sub plots. But I am not the target audience.

I mean, I don't think they're going rogue against anything. I think the name "Rogue Squadron" is kept as a tradition.

In Legends, Rogue Squadron began in the rebellion, and during the rebellion it became famous as the heroic squadron of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles. So then name was kept even after the war, well into the New Republic era, and new heroes like Jaina Solo aspired to be part of it.
