SPECULATION Poe Dameron's Role (Oscar Isaac)

Okay, I was hoping we'd learn something about his origin, but this actually got me very excited! So Leia is definitely behind some sort of mission to Jakku. And Poe will probably be making extreme choices for the sake of the Resistance, without a thought to his own safety/future.

 

I get the sense that we haven't seen as much of Poe yet because he's got a major part to play in the plot of the movie, things that JJ doesn't want to reveal just yet, such as the sequence of events in the first part of the film as hinted at in the Lego commercial and in the toy dialogue. It appears as though there are some extended chase / action sequences with BB-8 and Poe at the centre of things. It is going to be Poe's mission after all, as well as Kylo Ren's quest that is driving the opening scenes.

My guess is he's the least developed of the "holy trinity" and in this film serves mostly a "just in time" role of showing up at the precise moment needed to save the situation. I think the film is a bit crowded and since the film leaves Poe out of the large sections of the film, he's not going to be as interesting as Finn or Rey. He will however be a fan favorite because showing up "just in time" with a bad ass X-Wing and saving the die is always cool.

 

It does appear that Poe's folks are in shattered empire. In fact I'm betting he is conceived on the night the 2nd Death Star is destroyed.

If true his dad served under Han in the special forces and his mom was an A-wing pilot. This may explain why Leia feels so close to him. She has known him his whole life. Maybe his dad is killed at some point in the coming issues with Han ot because of his orders.

Maybe this theory has been floated already, but this thread is too long to keep track of all of them. Poe sounds like he might be the good guy equivalent to the Emperor's Hand. On the surface he's just another X-Wing fighter jock, but he actually gets the difficult, behind-the-scenes missions that others would mess up or where a team of people mounting an assault is just too conspicuous. He serves at the sole discretion of Leia (and maybe Luke) and reports to no one else. He's part warrior, spy for, and advisor to the high command.

 

I wonder what Poe's mini-arc will be now that we know he's from a military family and has been literally reporting to Leia from birth? He's clearly the Han of the trilogy in terms of role size, and he went from scoundrel to Rebel hero. Is Poe, through his interactions with Rey and Finn, going to go from Resistance hero to... scoundrel?

 

That's actually a great question, although I think by nature Poe is already a scoundrel, because let's face it the Rebel Alliance is just an awesome coalition of scoundrels , some more than others of course and he was born in that enviroment. What I think we will see is that side being toned down a bit, like what happened to Han over the course of the movies.

 

Minor detail from my dream last night:
I was reading Shattered Empire and it revealed that Poe Dameron's dad, Kes, is the son of Sola Naberrie (Padme's sister).

99.9% sure this is sheer lunacy, but there's a 0.1% chance this is a legit Force vision.

From the little we know about Poe, I have a feeling he may well be my favorite new character in the movie, especially if he's anything like his mother from Shattered Empire.

 

He will be up there. Oscar Isaac is freaking great.

 

Probably one of my favorite actors right now. He has phenomenal talent and is genuinely crazy excited to be in Star Wars, a true fan. Future Oscar (no pun intended) winner.

 

Who is Leia talking about here when she says, "It was a question about duty—our commitments to causes, and to each other, and how we balance the two."

 

Very interesting that he's the only new character we know f where they come from as far as family. I think something tragic will happen to his family and Leia will take him under her wing as Bey's last wishes. Like a God mother. Which is probably why Leia trusts him with the mission to retrieve the light saber.

 

Poe Dameron might turn to be the Jedi by the end of IX. Just watch --- that would be the big JJ twist. And Rey becomes an Ace Pilot like Anakin and Luke, and Finn will become Lando 2.0.
