It actually works that way. TPM as the prologue movie, AotC, TCW, and RoTS being the "Clone Wars trilogy," and then some movie that never got made, or perhaps something that is in the works or something already produced, serves as the prequel epilogue.

There have been releases of the rough drafts (including a comic adaptation by Dark Horse) and then much of what I've said can be found in the excellent trilogy of making of books by J. W. Rinzler which use contemporary sources and materials.
Lucas has lied many times when it comes to the making of the OT. Example: saying that he always intended to have Greedo firing, but it just wasn't clear in the original film. When the shooting script (including the copy owned by Peter Mayhew) says otherwise. Or in the interviews on the 1995 VHS, he claims that he wrote the OT as one big film and that he just took Act I and made it A New Hope. Again, not true if you look at the rough drafts.
I straight up mean that A New Hope was labeled as Episode VI. And yeah, The Phantom Menace acted as a prologue, but we didn't need a prologue. It's a trilogy, damn it.

Same as him saying he always intended Luke and Leia to be twins.

Yeah, if George got his pants in a twist over people writing Luke/Han fanfiction, I can't see him slipping incestuous subtext into the movies and "Splinter of the Mind's Eye." Luke and Leia were never meant to be siblings, the sequel trilogy was originally meant to cover Luke's search for his sister. But while he was working on RotJ, he didn't have the energy to make the sequels, and decided to deliver on the "there is another" thing by making the only female who had lines up to that point be his sister- despite the fact that there was a very blatant love triangle running up until that point. If George did always intend for them to be twins... well. There it is.

Agree. And that's why I reckon if both were supposed to be Skywalkers, Leia had quite enough reasons to be there at the Emperor's Throne facing Vader.

Rather than the incest and the blatant love triangle, that is why bothers me more from the Leia's arc: making her Anakin Skywalker's daughter and not making the most of that. We all know that Leia has had five onscreen confrontations with Vader - plus the ones added into the current canon via the new Marvel comics - and even without knowing he is her father, that invests her character in wanting some sort of resolution… justice… revenge. Why should Luke be the only one to have the right to confront Vader as a father?

Not that I was expecting anyone to go for the last possibility here, but I'm relieved no one has yet voted for the "originals are old and outdated" option.

Ooh, maybe do a related poll along the lines of "What should be done to anyone trying to reboot the OT?"

I prefer new movies, new stories. No point in remaking a masterpiece.

I don't think Star Wars would ever "need" a reboot anyway. The galaxy is so freaking huge and the story elements so versatile that there will always be room for new and interesting stories.

Yeah...this isn't star trek lol and also this is a soap era and it's on a galactic scale so rebooting one thing would mean rebooting EVERYTHING
