I thought that moment she wields the lightsaber was awesome. It is clear that Rey is being set up as the ST's young Luke Skywalker.

"I fear nothing. All is as the force wills it.." -Chirrut Imwe-

To me it was prolly the moment that SW was alive again. It puts alot of feeling and wondering as to why certain things happen in TFA. Rey and the lightsaber has a connection and now its to find out what is the meaning of it as we already know the meaning to the force. Here are a few quotes you can take note of as to TFA and Rey.

“Through the Force, things you will see. Other places. The future…the past. Old friends long gone.”

"For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.”

“Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose.”

“You will know (the good from the bad) when you are calm, at peace. Passive. A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack.”

I feel that what Yoda has preached in the OT link to Rey. it something that she herself has not learned but has adapt to it. i would like to know like all of us to how she was able so quick to use it. also, its a meaning of the force and how it evolves.

plus there are always two, remember that...

Great scene when she finally takes the saber but there was this very irritating switch where she let in the dark for a couple of minutes at the end of the fight against Kylo. Some of her moves and facial expressions looked quite similar to Sidious.

If the story had previously established that Rey had been trained in the Force and to fight with a lightsaber, perhaps this would have been a "great" moment. But no such thing was established and Rey ended up looking like a Mary Sue. Worse . . . I hate to say this, but actress Daisy Ridley didn't exactly handle that lightsaber with any real finesse.

So if they just told you everything without leaving anything for a sequel you'd be happier? Mk.

    Define 'everything'....

There are some basics that are essential to the development of the character. Then there are other stuff like the audience doesnt need to know, like what her favorite color is or what is her favorite drink....But in terms of who this character is - we want to be told this in order to relate to this character.

So after you saw ANH for the first time you had a full understanding of who Luke Skywalker was and accepted he was basically good at everything, just ya know, because reasons.

uh that was kind of the point though...thats how the choreography was and it does speak to what the character is..

I think what he is trying to say (correct me if I'm wrong) is that we have more questions then answers and that would mean less of an immediate understanding than we ned

I don't think we need that level of understanding, we just WANT it.
if Star Wars stops after ANH, Luke Skywalker is honestly a fairly bland and basic character. The difference is, there is a KNOWN plan for the future. At the time of being made, ANH was wrapped up in a pretty bow and Lucas went and retconned stuff to expand the canon. Thank god he did.
TFA did a lot of what ANH did but left more openings because we ARE getting that sequel. It just introduced us to new characters. Said hey, get to know them on a basic level so we can build characters in Ep 8. If they just explained the WHY for Rey and Luke and Kylo...there's almost nothing left for Ep 8.

Comparing Luke in ANH to Rey in TFA is not a route you want to go......

When you saw Luke in ANH, we saw his family, we were explained why he was on Tatooine, we were explained who his father was and we were presented who the main villain was and his background. Lucas established everything we needed to know and we didn't have questions. We saw his character arc.

Rey - we have no clue who this person is. We dont know any background. She magically mastered the Force without even knowing what the force is. We are not sure who raised her. We aren't sure why she powerful with the force. There is no development. The only thing we learn is that she is perfect at everything, which NO ONE in the audience can relate to. She is waiting for her family to come back for her - but who her family is was not established. We dont know anything. There is many more questions than answers.

That would normally be fine if they'd at least helped to answer a few important questions by now.

it's been a year. it's really not that big of a deal.

So because you were spoon-fed it, it's okay to accept Luke is just allowed to be the GOAT because his dad was a pilot/Jedi.
I should realize I'm probably trying to have a rational discussion with someone named "PrequelsRebron" and move on.

What is spoon fed ? It was a line of dialogue and we were SHOWN where Luke came from.

And whats with the insult on the screen name ? Be careful before going down that path, making any kind of insults on charcter, screen name choices, etc is a deflection of the debate which hurts your case, it means you are trying to veer off topic.

TFA was poorly written. Rey being 'perfect' at everything is lame.

Luke never really displayed his true skills with the Force until "Return of the Jedi" . . . the third film. The only aspect of his character that truly came off as Gary Stu was him immediately becoming a military pilot for the Rebellion in the first film.

Luke was written that way because he had to be because there was no guarantee of a second movie. They made Rey very similar to Luke, Ezra and Anakin...good at just about everything without having to try very hard. She's your basic Star Wars hero.
Only difference between her and Luke, we know we have ep 8 coming down the pipe and can afford to leave it open ended.

Almost all Rey questions are essentially just one. Who is she? We find that out, it explains it all.

No one seemed to care that a 10 year old happened to be the best everything ever in episode 1. (including getting into Natalie Portman's pants so props there). But Rey?!?! Inconceivable!

What is one thing that Rey, a grown woman mind you, has shown that she is seriously that much more advanced than "force birthed" 10 year old Anakin?

And hit an exhaust port with the proton of his x - wing while using the Force to make the same proton torpedo a curve.

Remembering that an exhaust port naturally doesn´t suck things to your interior. Maybe in Rogue One we have a more clear answer.
