It only creates a problem with the narrative if one thinks that you have to come from a line of powerful Force wielders to be strong in the Force. What if the narrative is that an ordinary person can do extraordinary things. The storyline would be very satisfying to me. There are a ton of children (and adults too) that could gain a lot from the message that you don't have to be a somebody or from a powerful (famous, rich, influential; pick whichever adjective) to become successful in life.

Problem with that is....if the Jedi were not to have attachments, which implies they didn't reproduce directly, means: "Why is Yoda so powerful in the Force?" or "Why is [insert Jedi here] so powerful in the Force?"

There might be some weight to this theory.

So we know that was left when she was about 9 years old, and HAS the memory of that moment in time, but as has been said, she's not exactly sure WHO her parents are or at least not sure of WHO left her there, although again, she does remember the moment as we saw in VII.

That being said, if Rey had been raised in a "Force-users" household, actually using the Force might be second nature to someone when they're in tune with it, but Rey was left on Jakku and seems to have since slowly forgotten all about her former life, and I wonder if this wasn't actually (somehow) designed and implemented in order to conceal her. NOW she's grown and has been touched directly by the Force and when that happened, the first opportunity that presented itself, she almost seemed to have some memory of how to tap into it...and it worked.

I personally don't think that this is Rey's first introduction to the Force (at least I HOPE not), and it will be now that she will remember it (without remembering all of her past at once) and her story will slowly come out. So yes @tm0910196 I think this is a plausible idea. :)

I posted this idea in another thread...

What if the device that Palpatine put on Jakku nullified Reys connection to the force...similar to kryptonite for superman.

Once she was away from Jakku, the effects subsided.

That is a very good thought as well, as what makes were weak in the force would also protect her, and not allow anyone to sense her presence. This would also explain why Jakku is a barren wasteland now. Because, without the force there cannot be life.

It seems to me the story group is trying to make this a point.

If Rey turns out to be a Solo or a Skywalker most of the trained force users will be part of the Anakin family tree. Certainly there's room for someone outside the family to strong with the force.
I believe she was closer to 5 years old. Is there information somewhere that says she's 9?

Not to my knowledge...just tossing out 9 for failing to remember at that moment, but perhaps she was 5. She just seemed slightly older than 5 based on my recollection of her memory......if you get my meaning! :D

I know the actress that played young Rey was older than 5. I'm not sure we have a definitive answer about Rey's age in that shot. If she's older than 5 and closer to 9 I might start leaning to Kylo being involved in her being left on Jakku. Although if she was 9 it seems like she'd have a better memory of her past.

Anyone can randomly be born Force sensitive, but when someone that is Force sensitive has children, they inherit their Force sensitivity. But what if two Force sensatives have a child together, would the child be stronger in the Force?

That is very plausible. There is something about what Palpatine was doing there.

Rey may not remember being left on Jakku, but her vision showed it to her, awakening a memory.

I'm with ya. I (personally) would be most inclined to say 7-8....because 5 seems pretty young, and like you said, we really don't have a definitive answer based on that quick shot, I'd still be more inclined to say at least 2 years older. That's just the parent side of me speaking. :)

A clarification just in case, even though this wasn't in response to me: my initial post was not meant to imply that Rey has to come from a powerful lineage in order to be powerful. I was simply thinking of "how" should learned her powers, whether related to someone powerful or not.

    Carry on. :)

When it comes to Rey's age on Jakku during her vision, didn't Pablo say something to the effect that all of that was just Rey's perception, which may not be accurate? (I'm pretty sure old Ben Kenobi said something along these lines, too... ;))

I know we all like to analyze everything to death (because it is fun), but we always have to be careful not to read too much into these things... especially Force visions since they are really there just to teach the person something about themselves (... and perhaps give the audience a little something to chew on as a *contorted* glimpse into the past or future...)

Rey being surprised by a masked Kylo Ren who appears from behind a rock in a snowy nighttime forest doesn't happen outside the confines of Rey's force vision because it is two separate future events that have been contorted into one.

Tell that to Palpatine, I bet his end was not quite as foreseen;). Always in motion the future is, there is no literal interpretation of the force' will. I'm not even sure what those events like Bespin don't imply that the vision is about Rey, maybe it is just her introduction to the whole force theme and, of course, a call to action, which she has to refuse in a Cambell monomyth.

Just because old Palps failed to learn something about himself from his visions, doesn't mean the messages weren't there...:p

I would argue for Rey, what she learns about herself from her vision is just that: She has a power she did not know existed and she is being called to action. Of course, it would follow the Campbell monomyth... but she still learned something about herself from the vision. A sense of belonging, being a part of something much bigger than herself... any number of things that will be further fleshed out in the EpVIII expanded version of her vision. :)

was about to put something very similar @Dark Toilet

what exactly would the point be of Rey seeing a real memory from her own past in a force vision? there are literally hundreds of posts spanning dozens of threads here in the cantina that ask 'who left Rey on Jakku with unkar plutt?' and that has led to assumptions about who could have done such a thing to a young child.

Looking at what's left in Canon in regards to force visions... force users have either seen some kind of glimpse into the future, or have seen something to learn and grow from.

this is perhaps just my view, but i don't think what Rey saw was a memory. She has been existing under the rule of the blobfish (plutt) for a long time, if she doesn't have any memory of how she came to be on Jakku or who her parents are.. perhaps the force is trying to show her a visual representation of what she has perceived all this time to have been what happened.

Would Kylo Ren not be affected by the device too? He seemed rather powerful when he destroyed Lor San Tekka's village.

A question asked in the "mystery" thread. Not sure is the answer...but I believe it was a "dark side" device planted by Palpy.

Also, per Life Debt, there is some sort of "disc" Sheev mentions.

I don't know about "amnesia" specifically, but upon my initial viewing of TFA, I thought it was very clear, throughout the film, that she had forgotten (for whatever reason) crucial moments of her past. It seemed most apparent when she closed her eyes and seemed to rediscover the power of the force. I know lots of people will dismiss this away as the wisdom Maz gave her in her castle, but I thought it was more apparent and deliberate than that.

I also found it interesting that Rey's own knowledge of who her family is and who dropped her off was conveniently left out of the plot. Feels as though they'll reveal how much she knows and how confused she is about how she came to be on Jakku and who left her there (probably not much) in order to explain more about who she is and where she comes from.

Another reason I think she has forgotten her past is her immediate decision to run from the saber. I know it was a frightening experience (her force back), but it seemed like there was more at play here than simply reacting to what the audience sees in the film. Her desire to run from her feelings, I think, has a lot more to do with subconscious experiences that have been tucked away, for whatever reason.

I bet part of her training will be a reveal about who she is and why she knows so little about herself followed by Luke helping her reconnect with both her past and the force (in addition to furthering her general training).

I wonder what the interpretation is on the Rebel alliance doll Rey has in her AT-AT living space.
I assumed it was made from memory rather than a story book, as where would she see images of a Rebel Xwing fighter?
I guess it was an early memory of hers.

I just read a transcript of some Pablo Hidalgo tweets in another thread that kinda puts a dampner on the whole 'Rey has Amnesia' thing.

However I really like the theory and would like to say that in KOTOR, if that is one of the places they are drawing influence from (and they should it has a better story than most star wars films) Then its not that the central character has amnesia....They also have fake memories given to them by the jedi.

So Everything Rey believes could in fact be a construct. if we are to believe someone (Luke/Snoke eg) was capable of using a mind wipe, then I would also assume all Rey's memories could be fabricated. I don't think this is the plot they will use. but it would be great for drama in ep8 if she learned it had all been a lie, and she was someone else. and I can imagine a speech Finn would need to give her, reminding her of who she is now, and how much good he saw in her yadayada...
