I like that white R2 unit. The color scheme reminds me of Ralph McQuarrie's production paintings featuring an entirely silver Artoo.

Um, you do realise this a miniature model, right? The only CGI in this scene are the background robots, and possibly the containers. Not sure about the ship the Jedi are disembarking either.

Specifically, I was referring to the backdrop. I couldn't find a great screenshot of the backdrop of this scene at the time, but in other shots it looks pretty rough.

    I assume it's a matte painting.

it took them many tries to make the columns and all unform

i don't like to think negative thoughts about Star Wars period, but there is a scene that absolutely annoys the... out of me!

it just so happens to be the opening shot of The Force Awakens:-

Kind of off topic, but have you heard the interpretation of that shot being about Kylo Ren's descent? Basically, you'll notice that the front of the SD looks a lot like Ben's saber, and it slowly blocks out the light of the planet... however, right before it does, some ships manage to escape the side of it.

    Interesting interpretation, for sure.

the shot wasnt meant to be scientifically accurate but rather just to look cool. One shot that hasnt aged well is in ANH when threepio and artoo first land on Tattooine from their escape pad

For me, the scene that aged most, is Alderaan and the first DS explosion by the end of ANH.
Especially, when compared to the Hosnian Prime and SKB ones in TFA.

Planets, or even the DS, are big things. Very, very, very big things. The way they explode in just 3 seconds in ANH is not convincing and really seem poor to me.
The way Hosnian Prime or SKB explode is more realistic.

This shot is from TFA, 1 second before Finn appears.
Am I the only one who thinks that the sand dunes in the background look kinda fake ?

those dunes were filmed in Dubai on IMAX so it oculd be the HD THAT is the problem

This one by a landslide. No question about it. In general, it's amazing how much more the CGI in the prequels has aged in a short period of time vs the OT, where a good portion of the special effects hold up despite being made 40 years ago.
