So now that the numbers are in on The Force Awakens and it is heading towards 2 billion WW.

Does it make sense for Lucasfilm and Disney to push VIII back to the Holiday season spot of 2017?

I know typically fans enjoy the old May the Fourth be with you slot.

However, does the May 2017 date make sense now?

Rogue One will only be out six months before VIII the way it is now?

    Let's discuss!

I think May 2017 is far too soon, personally. Less than six months after Rogue One, barely a year and a half after The Force Awakens. Not much opportunity for build-up.

This 'film every year' thing would make more sense to me if the Episodes were still spaced three years apart. They'd feel more like an event, like they used to.

They will not do that, because they have a bigger fish to fry. Episode VIII is scheduled for the release on May 26, 2017. The original Star Wars was released on May 25, 1977. It's 40-year anniversary almost to a day. Anniversary + sequel to a highly successful, beloved film = easiest marketing ever, event of the year.

Statistically movies do worse around Christmas time than summer (boxofficemojo). But I think with episode 8 it won't matter. After TFA's success the hype will be strong and it will break records yet again. Especially since Luke will actually be in this one.

TFA would have done these sales no matter what day they released it on so I imagine they will stick with the May 2017 since principal photography will probably be done by the end of summer 2016.

Preferably I want to see it as soon as possible, but if they need the extra time to make the movie better then I'll be fine with it. I'm pretty sure JJ did the same thing with TFA pushing it's release back from May, 2015 to December.

    You're welcome, I suppose.

The short answer is "no". December movies doing this well are outliers - the only ones I can think of are Avatar and the trilogy based on The Hobbit, with only the former doing so amazing due to it being seen as an event movie. A sequel can't be an event film unless it's the first one in a long time (like Star Wars).

So no one feels more frequent saga films makes them less... eventful? Interesting.

I don't think so. I expect that Rogue One will be very unlike the saga movies. They may even have more contemporary music etc... Their styles will be very different from each other.

As others have said, the business logic apparently supports May over December.

...but I sure loved Star Wars Christmas. Summer just won't feel the same.

Look at what films get the most return. The average successful movies happen in summer season (may - August), which is roughly an open of $51 million. SW made a December record due to IT BEING STAR - FREAKIN - WARS, so May 2017 DEFINITELY makes more sense unless he magic of their St new film in. A decade can be recreated, R1 is A Wild scars, however .

and we'd have to wait even longer? Who wants to wait?!

Plus not only do movies make more during summer but it will also open in China around that time, unlike what's happening now, so more box office money

There is zero chance that they will forfeit the 40th anniversary thing for any reason. But I guess since the script is probably already written and maybe even some work is already done, I don't think that it will feel rushed.

Don't forget that TFA started filming in May 2014 and it lasted around 5-6 months with some halts like Ford's injury etc.... So I guess that up until summer the filming will be over and then they will have like 10 months to do the rest.

I loved having a Star Wars film at Christmas, but it has to be a May film.

It should come out on the 40th anniversary. And to the day as well.

Anthology films (I ain't calling them 'Star Wars Stories') at Christmas is fine. But make the saga films May films.
