Keep in mind that I really liked Solo and am rooting for this entire community, from the creators down to the fans, to be united again. I want people to respect each other and work together for everyone's benefit. I want the fans to enjoy the films and I want the creators to make lots of money, and feel creatively fulfilled, off our enjoyment.

So, I'm gonna save us both a bunch of time and say "agree to disagree" on the split and move on. Cheers, mate. =)

He mocked a silly online petition to bring back the Old Republic. Regardless this has nothing to do with TLJ. Yes, Rian Johnson had his picture taken with "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" sticker which is tongue and cheek.
I wasn't arguing with you about the split. I asked you for a simple real example of Lucasfilm dismissing complaints about TLJ. It's question that remains unanswered.

The silly online petition didn't ask for legends material to come back but for Disney to adapt it into a live action streaming show(the material that kept star wars fans happy during the awful prequel Era and has more staying power and pop culture relevance than TLJ). And Pablo straight up insulted those fans.

If people think Disney isn't angry than explain why pablo twitter is deleted. Disney told him to shut up

We're way off topic now and I still haven't seen an example of Lucasfilm dismissing fans who didn't like The Last Jedi.

Also, a person just said that the Old Republic has more pop cultural significance than TLJ. !!!

Here's my 2 cents over the matter.

I think it's undeniable that this was the least desired Star Wars movie ever released, generally speaking.

It came out only five months from a somewhat controversial saga installment (TLJ). I'm an old time fan, I find the PT movies to be average, and I'm mixed about TLJ. Didn't like TFA that much either. They have their moments, but a fair share of problems too. I went to see Solo, liked it a lot (I loved Rogue One), but for the first time Solo was not a must-see-in-theaters-in-day-one SW movie for me. Part of the reason I went see it was probably just so I could know things first hand. But, hey, we could always see it later, right? Horrible thought for a SW movie, I know, but that's a fact. And yes, my disappointment with some parts of TLJ were a factor. Probably not much, but a factor still.

There was competition. Was there any real competition for TFA and TLJ (Rogue One)?

People hate to be disappointed. There was a lot to be disappointed about in this movie. I love Harrison Ford, Han Solo is my favorite SW character. Making the story of such an iconic figure like Han Solo was a huge gamble. People assume the worst and then get out of the movie feeling like it's Ok if not great because it was much better than their expectations, since they were very low. Mine were quite low. The problem is, as some have said, on how to bring these people to see the movie in the first place? Fans included. Again, the lack of teasers or other marketing materials were not an issue for me. The fear of being disappointed was. This can make someone second guess himself.

Production problems, main directors leaving was probably a factor. Objectively I want to believe it was not but I suspect it was. It helps create that anti-hype factor a fellow commentator was talking about. Having Ron Howard on board was a plus for me.

I agree that marketing, or lack thereoff, can be a factor. However, in my case I choosed to not see or read anything about Solo, I wanted to see it cold. I guess this is the case for many other fans who don't need trailers to go see a SW movie. I didn't read any critic's review either, I never do. Does any SW fan need to read a critic review to decide if he/she desires to see a SW movie? We can feel in our hearts if it's a go see movie or not.

What did people expect this film's outcome to be?

Looking at all I've read here and other places it seems to me that this movie, with these particular characters, where so much of the story was known already, where so much could have gone wrong, was probably destined not to be a huge hit. My feeling is that they felt that while in production and probably dropped the ball and just delivered what they could in the best shape possible.

In my opinion they did deliver, and this is legit, a good SW movie experience in my view, which was certainly worth it and I would go see it a second time if I lived near a city with cinemas.

My suggestion as a fan: Go see it!

    My scoring:
    TFA: 7
    Rogue One: 9
    TLJ: 7
    SOLO: 8

Well I am guessing next time 90% of the population groans at the idea of a movie they will take that into consideration. People have said for years that they had no interest at all in a Solo movie (much less one without Ford) so it flopping big time is hardly shocking.

This is why Disney should cut their losses and move on past Boba Fett. When that news leaked earlier this month people groaned even more than Solo. Selfishly I'd love to see the Fett film tie into Solo, but the general audience has spoken.

Now Lucasfilm might be dedicated to these type of stories. Solo's box office wouldn't be as bad if they didn't have to reshoot 80% of the film. There's room for lower budget/box office stories, but not when this happens.

I have no interest in a Boba Fett (or Childish Lando) film. So Solo flopping is the best thing that I think could have happened for my desires for this franchise. I think they kind of thought themselves a little bulletproof after all this success and just kind of assumed Solo would be at the very least a moderate hit despite all the apathy toward it. Pretty rude awakening. I have said before and I will say it again this flop is not due to the any kind of backlash or boycott from the hardcore fans because of Last Jedi. Hell I think the only people who did go watch this movie were hardcore fans. So this is due to the lack of interest on the general audience side more than a rebellion of jaded Last Jedi haters.

I think this is the thing, Solo is a disaster because it's budget was so big, the scale of everything like marketing and box office returns just gets magnified. This film was marketed like it was a medium-budget movie, so you get a Denny's commercial and a few Lego tie-ins and a teaser 4 months before release. I really do wish we get Star Wars films that are like that, where it's not a big deal, it's just a $105-million-budget movie and it comes out with some fanfare but nothing crazy, fans go see it and it makes enough money to turn a small profit.

That's kind of how I was expecting these "Anthology" films to be more like, Rogue One set a bit of a bad precedent by being pretty big in scale, whereas Solo looks and feels small, if Ron Howard had been involved from the beginning I couldn't see it costing more than $150 million to make.

this shows that the fanbase is not enough to carry the franchise, if you dont get the general audience attention, you are lost

Rian's "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" bit was something done for SteeleWars.
He had the whole "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" bit printed up on shirts, stickers etc.
And it was funny. (And he was right!)

the "Story" movies in Star Wars should be much more constrained budget wise. One of my favorite things about Solo, was that it wasn't a world ending or universe ending danger. it was just bad for Han.

Old republic cinematic universe with small stories leading to big saga level events like the jedi civil war or the mando war.

Original characters in rogue one beat solo...more rogue ones (better written though) and less solos.

Make these movies each cover a different tone but be events in their own right(solo smallness is a weakness).

    And bring it all together

They are not trying new things

This film was a origin story of a Maclunkey A list character which was held together by scenes in which we expected from lines of dialogue from the OT.

Sometimes these types of movies become cult classics. Solo suffered from a perfect storm, I think IX will feel it too. I'm certainly curious to see how IX fares now after Solo's disappointment. I don't think there was a great boycott to Solo, more of apathy due to it not being a Saga film, fans not really wanting a Solo backstory, and just a general fatigue of SW after TLJ (more of a TLJ fatigue than a SW fatigue).

Solo may do well in blue ray/dvd sales, but by then Disney will already have moved on making decisions why it failed. I'm curious to see what Disney comes up with.

Edit: I just want to add that there are varying degrees to the "haters" out there and the way they'd react to a SW film so close after TLJ.

You have those who abhore TLJ and will now boycott anything SW until changes at the top (fire KK ect...)
You have those who hate the movie and need a break from SW. Skip on a couple movies until they see something that really catches their interest (not Solo or IX).
You have those who've just lost interest since TLJ, have decided that maybe SW isn't for them after all.
You have those who are tired of the drama of it all and just don't want to be a part of it anymore.
You have those who are mixed, but leaning more on the dislike. Those may wait or even forget to take in Solo and may be more easily swayed by mediocre to bad reviews.
You have those who feel mixed about TLJ and never liked the idea of Solo to begin with.

I'm sure I'm missing some, and there are probably combination therein that could apply as well, but I really don't think there was a boycott so much as apathy. Maybe marketing failed to sell this movie, but I think it was going to be a hard sell for many fans with or without TLJ. TLJ added to it, but there was a tough challenge without the fan split.

Episode IX will fare very well. The final film in every Star Wars trilogy does better than the middle film but less than the first. The problem Disney has been having is time constraints for marketing, which now won't be a problem. TFA dropped its teaser 13 months before its release, while Rogue One and Last Jedi had only something like nine months from the first teaser to release, and Solo had less than half of that. Disney could start marketing Episode IX tomorrow if they wanted to, now that Solo is out and getting buried. They begin filming next month, and I imagine they will repeat the TFA pattern with a quick tease in November of this year. It'll have tons of hype leading into it.

I like the general idea, but I don't know if the Old Republic would be the ideal timeline. You've gotta understand a lot of fans dislike the PT, and that would affect any Old Republic movie. I'm not saying it would do as bad as Solo, but I think there would be a certain apathy by a fairly large portion of the fan base, at least to start. I'm not sure if it could or would draw in the general public. I could guarantee there'd be some resistance, and that would probably play into the first one or two movies not quite meeting expectations. Disney has the money to blow, but at the same time, I think they feel they need a sure fire win after IX to re energize the fan base. I think you'll get your wish eventually, but I don't see it until at least 5 years after IX.

I think you under estimate the power of the rolling eyes after TLJ, but I have been known to be wrong from time to time. I honestly think IX will be the first SW film to make less than the middle one. It'll top a billion, but it will fail to get the 1.3 of TLJ. That's my prediction anyways, no statistical analysis, just a gut feeling.

Honestly i think you are over estimating too much the fans, but who knows, im pretty sure Disney and Lucasfilm will do a good job with the Marketing like they did with TFA and TLJ, they need the general audience to get excited. Still was a bad move put this film with little marketing, against infinity wars, and deadpool 2 . The worst thing is that Jurassic World 2 is coming
