maybe it's just my simple mind... but if your gonna carry straight on from the last film, then i'd want option 2:-

    • Crawl
    • Pan down to Ach-to
    • Falcon flies past
    • See Rey walking up the Hill again - perhaps from a slightly different perspective than TFA.
    • Luke and Rey have that first conversation.
honestly... watching Rey climb that hill knowing that we're gonna hear them talk - making the hairs stand up on the back of my neck just thinking about it.

Joke's on us... Luke'll be using sign language throughout the film. ;)

But no, seriously, I agree with you.

I've been out of the loop for a while, so it might just be me, but have Disney/Lucasfilm really stated it will begin with Rey and Luke? I thought they just said it will pick up where TFA left off. There's a bit of wiggle room to interpret it different ways.
I wouldn't be a bit surprised if VIII starts off with Ren and Hux arriving to see Snoke or some other FO base or ship.
Just asking a simple question along with a wee bit of speculation. :)

I agree. As far as I'm aware there is nothing that says it will start off with Rey and Luke. I think some are interpreting it that way. VIII starting where TFA left off just means there is no time gap between the movies. As you said that does leave a lot of wiggle room. They can start the movie anywhere in the galaxy at that same moment in time that Rey and Luke meet. Perhaps we see Kylo meeting back with Snoke after his defeat. Maybe we see Finn waking up. They could go in a lot of directions

It can start where Rey and Luke left off then crawl and timejump. Just be different in sequence than any other SW movie

Do you count Rian Johnson as nothing? He confirmed at SWC that the film will start where the last left off with Rey holding out the lightsaber for Luke and continuing from there.

Thank you, that was definitely something of what I was asking for. Though, if I really wanted to argue the point, there is a little bit of wiggle room (as far as super speculative fans go;)) for the case to be made the film could start somewhere else. It just means the first time we see Luke and Rey will be right where we last saw them.

I would like to see it start with the approach to the island then moves to a reflection in one of Luke's eyes staring at Rey holding his lightsaber.

Thanks for the link. I have not seen that before. However, I do agree with @Stormagadon that there is still wiggle room. He admits that the movie starts where we left off and that the first scenes they shot were on Skellig. It is implied in the article that the movie will start off with the Rey and Luke lightsaber scene but Rian did not specifically say it will. The Skellig shot was filmed back in October 2015 because of the limited availability of filming there and the weather at that time of year not necessarily because that issue first shot of the movie. There is a good chance it might be the first scene. That being said, things can change in post production and they can easily start off somewhere else in the galaxy at that same moment in time and then go to the scene on Ach-to. Remember that TFA was originally going to start off with Luke's hand and saber floating through space but was changed later.

Yeah I don't think they will literally start with Rey handing Luke a lightsaber .

So we know from Rian Johnson's Episode VIII Production Announcement that his Star Wars movie might very well begin on Ach-To, specifically at the time of the climax of TFA. This is the baton handover--the gift of Excalibur to Arthur.

Notice in the screen captures below, Rian's principal photography was done in full sunlight! Perhaps JJ's version of the scene was filmed in conditions partly cloudy without much sun. The moment is clouded--what will Rey and Luke do next? How does the story move forward? How do the clouds dissipate?

Episode 7 - top (TFA screen capture)
Episode 8 - bottom (Rian Johnson's announcement screen capture)

    jj-rj-ep78.jpg

Remember there are two major legends (out of many) of how Arthur obtained the sword Excalibur. In one legend, Arthur pulled the sword from the stone, thus being worthy of becoming King of England. In another legend, the Lady of the Lake gifted it to him. Then upon Arthur's deathbed, he instructs his closest confidant and knight to throw the sword back into the lake.

Ach-To appears to be a water world and may symbolize what the lake in Arthurian legends symbolizes. Lakes represent the beyond and the unknown.

Imagine the beginning of Ep8. Luke, who has probably already built another lightsaber, may throw his father's lightsaber into the depths of the watery planet, returning the relic back into the depths of being lost. Such a move would be hard to swallow, but one that would be a surprise. The first act of the Ep8 may show Rey being briefed and trained. She may be tasked retrieving Anakin's lighstaber from the waters. Or, she may have to build her own lightsaber (from her staff)....thus being rewarded with a kaiburr crystal from Force Ghost Yoda. Hope we see Yoda! This ritual has its origins in the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons, and it is a well established practice. Perhaps Rey's crystal will not be blue when it attunes itself to her connection to the Force. Red? Pink? Purple? Green? White?

So, after the opening crawl, picture the sea of stars. One star grows larger and larger until we realize it is a meteor. It approaches Ach-To and enters the planet's atmosphere, passing violently through the cloudy skies. CUT TO: Luke and Rey. Luke sees the meteoroid fall through the sky behind Rey and crash into the waters of the planet. He is inspired. Clouds dissipate and the sun comes out. Luke accepts the lightsaber from Rey and then immediately he spins around and throws the lightsaber off the cliff and into the waters below. CUT TO: Hux and Kylo Ren going to report to Snoke.

Or, maybe, this allusion of Arthurian legend actually occurs at the end of the movie. Upon Luke's deathbed--bear with me here--his body is brought to Ach-To. There is a funeral pyre. The next morning Rey pulls from the ashes the lasersword and she throws it into the waters just as the knight did with Excalibur after Arthur's death....

That would indeed be interesting. It would be hilarious if Luke takes the saber, and immediately turns and just throws it as far as he can towards the water. The turns, and says he first words. "Screw that blast".

It's important to remember It probably took quite a while to reach Ach-To. That could very well have an effect on when/where the movie will actually kick off.

In TFA all the hyperspace travels seemed to be instant.

When they go to Starkiller, it doesn't seem a lot of time passed.

    According to timeline.

It was announced that Starkiller was engaging his weapon and not shortly after the X Wings were on the planet.

I expect the crawl to mention the political state of the galaxy after the Starkiller base destroyed most of the New Republic. This is the best way to explain the Resistance/First Order/New Republic.

Then we pan over the water, to the island, and then to Rey holding the lightsaber up to Luke. They might show her walk again. I doubt they'll show Kylo/Snoke or the Resistance before Rey/Luke. That would just be weird after how TFA ended.
