Yeah I am pretty sure the FO Riot Control Trooper standard equipment did not feature staffs that can counter Jedi light sabers. The trooper will be cut down in less than 3 seconds.

 

What are you on about? I thought they built a fully functional working Falcon with hyperdrive and all

 

Seriously though, Rey being the daughter of Han and Leia makes less and less sense as we see more of the film. They wouldn't have just dumped her on the planet to keep her safe only to drag her on some dangerous adventure. It just doesn't make sense.

 

I have seen that as well...much like her father, and grandfather before her.

 

I thought it was Poe who walked by really quickly.

 

It is designed to stop a saber, though. Finn clearly doesn't cut through it as the trooper pushes it back. It is like an electrostaff. He probably won't last, but not because the weapon can't stop a saber.
This is likely similar tech to what the Knights of Ren used. It even has the red lights on it.
This also means Finn could have been trained with these weapons to fight potential Jedi. So his use of the saber makes more sense. He may have a sense of how sabers work.

 

Didn't Grievious' minions have staffs that would do the same in ROTS? I don't recall it ending well for them either...

 

It is clear that Finn is quite partial to that lasersword and wields it with the skill of a great warrior(George would be proud of that quote from me)

 

Grievous's minions went up against trained Jedi. Plus they were droids and we know they weren't that great anyway. Finn was raised to be a trooper from birth. As I said, I don't think it will work out for the trooper, but not because of the weapon. I think this is like what the KOR use in that pic.
Also, the droids could have defeated Jedi we haven't seen. Grievous had a collection of sabers.

I cannot conceive of Finn being anything but Force sensitive regardless of combat training with melee weapons. Its one thing to use the light saber as a cutting tool, its another thing completely to wield it in combat and not cut your own limbs off...

 

I think people make more of the "you'll cut your limbs off" thing than they should. It may be hard to get used to, but people don't normally use them in ways that would lop their hands off. Luke did fine the first time he turned one on - without any safety instructions from Ben - and while blinded on the Falcon, and that was his first training session. Finn was trained from birth to be a trooper and use weapons. He should have more skill than Luke. And how much training in combat did Luke have when he faced Vader? We don't see him training at all with a saber beyond ANH.

 

You won't do it but once...

We don't see a lot of Luke's training in Empire. Or ROTJ. The notion that he trained a matter of months before embarking on a mission to confront TWO Sith Lords is insane. No one less than the son of Skywalker could have accomplished that.
