That's the whole point of the fight. Finn is not our main protagonist. It is Rey. Rey accepts her Destiny for a reason. It is not Finn's destiny to save the day. His real job is to take care of our protagonist, like an older brother which he does successfully enough for Rey to wake up.

He won't fight. There is no reason for him to. Rey's force will awaken and the "day will be saved".

This. The duel will be very intense but nothing insane.

Also there's no point to make this the most intense lightsaber battle ever. Save it for the climax of the trilogy.

My gut tells me that Luke will show up and take on Kylo after Finn is injured.. they then duel while the Falcon lands to pick up Rey and Finn...

I had commented on another thread that I thought it would cool to see something similar to The Karate Kid where Mr. Miyagi fights all five of the Cobra Kai. Rey and Finn need rescuing from an out numbered threat from the Knights of Ren. Luke shows up and owns them in a similar fashion as Mr. Miyagi.

I remeber hearing a very early leak about the final duel of the film. It was super vauge and so long ago that I had put it away as nothing more that an rumour but that bit of concept art with the falcon reminds me of it.

The Rumour was (and this is according to someone who has apparently seen the storyboards) that the final fight would take place in a forest, with the millenium falcon burning in the background. and there was a hooded unidentified Jedi ( I assumed luke at the time and still do) sat cross legged, waiting for the villain to approach.
In an Akira Kurosawa samurai esque pre-duel sequence.

I think at this point its not really news as its such an old bit of info that's its probably been debunked and I just don't know about it. Anyway. I would indeed like if something like that happened. and Kylo and Luke got to do a bit of Obi ben vs Vader dueling and talking to each other.

Given how everything is adding up, I just don't see how Luke doesn't end up dueling Kylo at the end when it seems all hope is lost for Finn and Rey.

For one, it is just ridiculous to think that either of those two is going to be able to beat Kylo Ren without formal training. There is just no way that this would be believable. If Luke had drawn his lightsaber, cut up the stormtroopers, and then took down Vader in the Death Star after Obi-Wan was struck down in ANH, people would have thought, "Yeah, rubbish. He's only turned the thing on a couple of times!" Granted, Kylo Ren is not Darth Vader at this point, but all indications are that he is pretty damned powerful and has some formal training.

And the idea of a bunch of bombs going off and breaking things up, as MSW has suggested will happen? Terribly unsatisfying.

Lucasfilm is going to major lengths to build up the "What's the deal with Luke?" theme for this movie. They have been all along. He is the one character they have done everything in their power to conceal everything about in relation to this film. If rumors are to be believed, his legend in the galaxy is a central driver of the plot. It would seem natural to approach the buildup to the movie this way if you are planning an unbelievable reveal that will throw people who have been waiting to see him in action for 30 years into a frenzy. And with everything that has been established in the movies so far regarding the power that Luke inherited from his father, what better way to reveal him that to do that with a grand heroic intervention at the climax of the film when all is lost? It would especially fit if, as rumored, Kylo Ren kills Han Solo in cold blood earlier in the film. After really building Kylo into a monster who kills maybe the most beloved character in Star Wars, what better way to round the movie off emotionally than to having our heros fail to avenge Han and then have Han's best friend come in and teach the punk a lesson?

What I appreciated in the PT duels is the skills that was displayed. I think that was no doubt a superior feature to the duels in the OT.

But you are right. They were generally overly choreographed, to their detriment. This is especially true of Obi-Wan vs. Anakin in ROTS. I do think that the duel in TPM and Windu vs. Palpatine in ROTS were absolutely fantastic and got it right.

I want to see a balance of the skill in the PT with the power of the OT. If you could combine Luke vs Vader in ESB or ROTJ with, say, Windu vs. Palpatine in ROTS, I would be very happy.

I agree. I don't think it would be good storytelling for Finn to go down just so Rey can "embrace her destiny" and "save the day." It's also a little hard to believe that Rey (who I think is someone who has never used force powers and never trained with a light saber) would be able to go out there and best Kylo who is at the very least an average to above average saber fighter. I would image that she wouldn't fare much better then her friend Finn.

I can see Finn going down and Rey attempting to save the day, but that will be a losing battle until someone outside source comes and actually saves the day. Whether that Luke or Chewy or whatever.

That's just my humble opinion though. :)

That would be a pedestrian path to take if we are talking about building a saga. I can't blame you for expecting that to happen given so many examples on TV and in the movies. But, there are some small clues which go against this. John absolutely loves the character he's playing and he was impressed by the arc Finn takes during the movie... and the 'Damn right!' comment during the mention of 'a Jedi' when the camera was on him. Now we both know he's taking about Luke here, but it's the symbolism.

Kasdan and JJ are too clever to make one supposed hero a stepping stone for another--that's B movie stuff. The awakening is going to be part of a greater journey they take together. And, if some of the Knights of Ren are being played by the stars of The Raid/The Raid 2, then Luke, Rey and Finn have their hands full. We haven't even gotten to Snoke, and etc..

Bottom line give Rey and Finn time to let us know them and care about them. See them struggle and have them both become stronger for it. Most of us want them to be bad asses, but not in some instant light switch fashion.... not in Star Wars.

I'm in on that.. Luke will show up and save the day, and at the same time we have our Luke reveal showing his face for the first time on the screen in 30 somewhat years. Cool..;);)

Is John Boyega not allowed to be excited about his character? This is not a clue on how significant his character will be. His character is extremely significant. He may even be a jedi. However, I do not think he is the one to take on Kylo Ren. That's just not his destiny.
Leaked information from concept art and Making Star Wars would also say otherwise

That point in the movie is a changing point for Finn as well. He's protecting his best friend. His first best friend died from Kylo Ren. You think he's gonna let that happen again? It's just not his job to beat Kylo.

Yep. It would be very poor storytelling. To have Rey just all of a sudden come and save the day against Kylo Ren who is a full-on warrior.

I really think it should just be a classic one-on-one battle with finn and kylo and you have Luke coming to fend off kylo before finn is finished.

The whole point is Rey is strong in the force. Her force awakens!!! Doesn't that count for something?

And how would that be BETTER story telling??? A character who has been completely out of the film until this point just so happens to pop up and save the day.

That would be a dramatic entrance. We know Luke is a trained Jedi.

With Rey (or Finn for that matter) it would be artificial since they don't seem to know much about the force according to the trailers.

That would make TFA the greatest movie of all time, i like your way of thinking, what an ending that would be
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 25, 2015, Original Post Date: Oct 25, 2015 ---
You're assuming that she doesn't have training, somebody said the same thing to me when i thought Kylo wouldn't have training, they both could have been younglins at one point even padawans.

One of the suggestions from Lucas for the new Trilogy is that both Rey and Kylo would be Solo's offspring and they were at a new Jedi Academy that was attacked and most younglins and padawans killed like in ROTS, nobody knows how much or if any of Lucas idea were used

I can see a duel where Rey and Finn are trying to defeat Kylo. Rey gets force pushed down, while Finn gets bested by Kylo. I can picture Kylo taking the OT lightsaber from Finn and hooking to his belt. Meanwhile Rey comes to her senses as Kylo approaches Finn for the kill. She see's the saber on the belt and attempts to use the force to draw it to her, she now accepted the force (let it in?). The light saber begins to move and lift away from the belt. It releases and flies to Rey, but passes her and lands right to the robotic hand of Luke, who has come to save the day. Kaboom the Luke reveal and then the final light saber duel of Kylo getting his A** kicked, and bailing for his life.

I LOVE this idea. Not only does this show that kylo ren is actually dangerous and not another darthmaul (How i wish he was not killed)
It would also be one of the most amazing reveals in cinema. The shock of having luke grab back his fathers old lightsaber right from kylo would be amazing!

    Let's see....where to begin?

I've always thought that the PT lightsaber battles displayed the very pinnacle of Jedi lightsaber training, style, and execution, and were very visually dramatic. Even being nearly 50 years old and a diehard OT fan as I am, I've always thought that the OT Kendo-style lightsaber scenes were clunky and unbelievable....for instance in ESB where Luke swings his blade like a 6 pound two-handed broadsword. That being said, we have to remember that the end of ROTS, that the formal Jedi training in saber combat (that we know of) is at an end with the fall of the Jedi, and Luke has never had any real and/or extensive training in that art, which is displayed in his fight scenes in the OT.

Now we are in a new era in SW with the emergence of TFA. The lightsabers that we've seen are being wielded by Kylo and Finn and I'm very eager to see the fighting style. In the end, I personally hope to not only see Luke, but would like very much to see him wield a lightsaber by the end of the film.

It's not a dramatic entrance. It's a convenient entrance. He just happens to show up. He could say he's been following our heroes over the course of their whole story or that the force called him to them or something. But in reality, he just happens to show up.

This is more cliche than Rey unleashing her true potential in my opinion. Time and time again we've seen convenient entrances in the star wars universe. The prequel ones were a bit strange at times. In fact, we see a wise, powerful Jedi come save our two heroes from the villains in the prequels and it turned out to be one of the weaker moments of the movies (Not a disaster. But not Star Wars at its best).

The reason this scene worked is because it was a redemption in Han Solo's character. He went back because he had feelings for his friend. That made it a positive "convenient" moment.

If you think that Luke, who we haven't seen in 30 years, is going to magically pop up and save the day, you will be disappointed. It's a terrible way to introduce the character into the movie. If it happens, people will applaud it because it's "Epic" to see Luke back and kicking ass. However, after they leave the movie, they will realize it is an awful way to bring him back into the story.

I guarantee people will be very mad if Han dies and Luke shows up 10 minutes later to save the day. I guarantee it!

I trust making star wars on this one. He's going to show up at the end of the movie. I'm not saying it's wright or wrong. I'm just saying from the story standpoint, one about finding Luke Skywalker, it makes sense we find him instead of him finding everyone else.

But that's the whole point of this movie!!! They are going to learn a bit about the force and their inner force is going to come out!!! It's the title of the movie!!! Rey is not the chosen one in the sense that she is part of a prophecy. It is just her destiny to take the lead.

Kathleen Kennedy has said time and time again that these new movies will have strong female leads. There's none more stronger than a young female jedi.

We will have some scenes with Luke before the end, we just wont see his face until the end of the film. So we will be REintroduced to him before the end of the film. If Luke can feel Rey (and Finn for that matter) through the force, and sence that they are in trouble it makes perfect sence for him to find them and help them take on Kylo Ren. However it wouldnt make sence for him to just ignore it if he can feel that they are in trouble.

It would be a lot better than a scavenger with no formal lightsaber training all of the sudden becoming such a powerhouse in the force and then stepping in and if not outright defeating someone with years of training and developed Force skills- then at least holding him up long enough for a bunch of bombs to go off and break off the fight- just because all of the sudden she "accepts her destiny."

Sorry, but that's not how it works. You have to crawl before you can walk. You didn't see 9-year old Anakin Skywalker at a level where he could take on Sith Lords, did you? And the boy was conceived by nothing by midichlorians. The best you saw from Anakin at that point without any formal training was that he coud fly like a bad mother. Same story with Luke when he got into this Force stuff for the first time without any training- although he also showed he could block blasters when blinded and make a near impossible shot to save the galaxy in ANH.

The most logical storytelling would be for both Finn and Rey to get demolished by Kylo Ren after he kills Han in cold blood. Really build up the hatred for this character, and take it to the point where it even looks like he's won before Luke swoops in and saves the day. (Like Han saved Luke's bacon in ANH when Vader had him target locked in the Tie.) That would be far better than the "Rey is a hero because she decides to be" outcome. That would be horrible storytelling and a cheap way to introduce a new hero. Finn and Rey need to get their butts handed to them like many great Jedi before them have early in their careers. Have Luke come in and save them, then prepare them to kick Kylo's butt later on in the saga.

    Dude,

Why the hell would Rey need Luke to teach her if she is magically able to beat Kylo Ren because she accepts her destiny and her "inner force" comes out? That is just incredibly amateur. And frankly, it is an insult to the kind of journey that Jedi before her have had to go on in the Star Wars universe- especially Luke, who had to learn bits and pieces on his own without a formal teacher and later had to go through the paces of formal training before he could respectably take on Vader.

You might as well just spit all over Luke Skywalker's character and turn him into a paralyzed vegetable who can't talk and just sits in the corner like a moron, because his character would basically have that much significance if this line of storytelling is followed. And frankly, this is an unacceptable path for Star Wars to take, Star Wars is founded completely on Luke Skywalker and the significance of his journey in the Original Trilogy. Star Was is Luke Skywalker's theme. The theme of the saga doubles as Luke's Theme for a reason. To turn Star Wars into the story of the girl who destroys everyone immediately because she accepts her destiny and so callously dismiss the importance of Luke to Star Wars would be, dare I say it, blasphemous.

I mean, really. If Rey is able to beat Kylo Ren for as whimsical a reason as she accepts her destiny, then there's really no limit to what she can learn on her own. No need for Luke or any other teacher, because she is the immaculate Jedi Jesus Christ who is already omnipotent and omniscient on her own.
