I am all for the book expanding information but my god they loved plenty of crucial scenes on the cutting room floor.

What all is said about Hosnian Prime, the Senate, and the New Republic in the novel? I kind of feel like they didn't give enough info about the NR in TFA and reaction to the destruction of the NR capital, so I'm interested to see if there's more info on it that wasn't in the film.

    For once:
The republic needs an incredibly long time to recognize the FO as a threat and declare war. The old people where Leia has any standing have been retiring and the new ones are more interested in scheming and powerplays.
Leia is seen as crazy, with many perhaps wanting to get rid of her. This is why she sends her envoy Kor Sella. The young woman in army uniform we see at the forefront when the Starkiller destroys Hosnian prime.
